Description

1. 0. BELKNA'P.
Reflectors.
Patented May 13, 1873.
jazz/Iar UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
JACKSON O. BELKNAP, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN REFLECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,843, dated May 13, 1873; application filed.
April 11, 1873.
To all whom t may comer-n:
Be it known that I, JACKSON OGDEN BEL- KNAP, of Mobile, county of Mobile, State of Alabama, have invented a novel Improvement in Illumination and Reflection of Golors, entitled the Rainbow Reflector, of which the following is a specfication:
This invention has for its object the exhibition of any form of design or figure in colors upon a concave reflector by the arrangement of 'colored transparent eones, covered frame-work or disks of Various shapes betWeen the reflector and a gas or other light, whereby such colored designs or figures may be reflected with magnified efi'ects.
Referring. to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this speeification, Figure 1 represents a three-quarter View of my de- Vice complete Fig. 2, a side elevation, showing pipe as passing through the retlector;
Fig. 3, a like elevation, showing the pipe beloW the reflector; and Fig. 4, a front View of cone or disk.
Correspondin g letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
A represents the refiector; B, the gas-burner or lamp; O, the cone or disk in one form and D, the metallic cone or disk holder or attachment. y
The reflector may be Varied in form to suit circumstances or desire. The frame Work, cones, or disks, can be made of mica, stained glass, gelatine board, or any other tra-nsparent material, in one color or in sections, rings, bands, and Various shaped figures of many eolors, or painted in transparent colors. The largest end of the cone or disk O is placed next to the light, in a horizontal position, With the small end near or touching the reflector, so that the light from the burner will shine through the center and sides of the samo, displaying corresponding designs and colors to those upon the cone or disks, and which will be refiected back to the eye of the beholder, thus exhibiting a great variety of forms and colors of great brilliancy.' The cone or disk may be attached to the reflector in stead of the burner, When desirable, preserving its position, as described.
A series of colored disks or forms of colored transparent material may be arranged upon arms and revolved around the light by means 'of clock-work, heated air, or otherwise, thus presenting a succession of colored forms, alternatel y, between the reflector and light. The cone O may also be made to revolve in its horizontal position, as shown.
This invention pertains also to refiectors of yarious kinds suspended overhead to eeilings, &c. In such cases an Opening must be in the center of the reflector to alloW the escape of smoke and heat.
The device of the colored cone, frame-work, or disk may also be used to throW colors through a glass dome.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as novel, and desire to seoure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination and arrangement of reflector A, burner or lamp B, and cone or disk G of colored plates and figures, either stationary or movable, attached to either burner or refiector, substantially as and for the 'purpose
