Description

C. S. CLARKSON.
\ COOLING APPARATUS.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 20, I920.

INVENTUR flaw? UNITED STATES CHARLES S. CLARKSON, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
COOLING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1921.
Application filed November 20, 1920. Serial No. 425,311.
1 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. CLARK- soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio have made an invention appertaining to looling Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to cooling apparatus, and particularly to those of the window cooler type.
In apparatus of this class heretofore used, so far as I am aware, the box or member forming the cooling chamber has been dis posed without the window in communication with the outside atmosphere, thereby necessitating a raising or opening of the window to render access thereto.
The object of my invention is the provision of a window cooler which is disposed interiorly of the window, so that access thereto may be had without opening the window, and which has one side thereof formed by the window pane so that cold from the outer side of the window is transmitted through the pane to the interior of the cooler, the other walls of the cooler being heat insulated from the temperature of the room in which disposed.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure I is a perspective view of a cooler embodying the invention attached in operative relation to a window, and Fig. II is a section thereof on the line IIII.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a window casing, and 2 the lower sash of a window therein, provided with the custommy glass pane 3. A box 4: forming the refrigerating or cooling chamber is mounted on the sash 2 for raising and lowering movements therewith so as not to interfere with anopening of the sash when desired, and has the side thereof disposed toward the pane 3 open, except for said pane against which the rear edge walls of the box bear.
A close joint is provided between the rear edge walls of the box and the window pane by interposing a strip of rubber 5, or other suitable gasket material, therebetween. The box is held firmly to the window pane by securing brackets 6, which connect the sash and box, or it may be accomplished in any other suitable manner. The front, or one of the sides of the box exposed to the room, is provided with a door 7 to facilitate access to the interior of the box. The walls of the cooler exposed to the warmer temperature of the room are preferably acked or lined with any suitable heat insu ated material, as shown at 8.
If desired, the interior of the box may be placed in communication with the outer atmosphere for ventilation purposes through one or more pipes 9 in communication at one end with the interior of the box and at the other end through the window sash with the outer atmosphere, and each of these pipes may have a valve 10 therein (Fig. II) to regulate the passage of air therethrough.
It is found in practice that a cooling box having an open side placed in close contact with the inner side of a window pane will have an interior temperature very nearly that of the temperature without the window, as the glass forms a ready temperature conductor. It is thus evident that my cooling means has all of the advantages of the outside cooling boxes without the incon venience thereof and without exposing the contents of the box to the dust and weather which is usually the case with outside boxes.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, or to the manner of securing the box to a window sash or pane, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. The combination with a window pane exposed at its outer side to the outside atmosphere, of means forming a cooling chamber and having an open side bearing closely against the inner side of the window pane and closed thereby.
2. The combination with a window sash having a pane of glass therein exposed at its outer side to the outside atmosphere, of a cooling box fixedly carried by the sash and having an open side-bearing closely against the inner side of the window pane and closed thereby whereby the outside temperature is communicated through the window pane to the interior of the box.
3. The combination with an outside window of a building, said window having a glass pan-e therein, of a cooling box having one side open with its edges closely abutting 10 against the inner side of the window pane whereby the pane serves as a closure for such side gasket means between the abutting surfaces ofthebox and pane, and regulable means for opening communication between the interior of the box and the outside at- CHARLES S. CLARKSON.
