GLUING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 19. I921.
UNITED STATES FEED C. DDIBBERTEEN, OF STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
GLUING-MACHINE.
Application filed March 19, 1921.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED C. DOBBERTEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, county of St. Joseph, State of Michi-i gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gluing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gluing machines.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved gluing machine for applying glue to dovetailed mortises by means of which the glue may be uniformly and effectively applied.
Further objects and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side view of my improved glue applying machine.
Fig. II is a detail view partially in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. III.
Fig. III is a detail view partially in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. II, the glue applier-s being shown in their projected position by dotted lines.
Fig. IV is a fragmentary view illustrating the method of applying the glue to a mortised piece.
Fig. V is a fragmentary section partially in section of one of my improved glue appliers.
Fig. VI is a detail perspective view of a furniture part showing one class of work to which the machine illustrated is adapted.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the glue receptacle, 2 a water jacket communicating with a heater reservoir 3 having an electric unit 4 therein. Above the chamber or reservoir 3 is a supply receptacle 5 having a spout 6 delivering to the glue receptacle 1 and controlled by the valve 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 453,795.
8- represents a furniture or cabinet part having dovetailed mortises 9 therein. My improved glue appliers 10 are formed of rods and have downwardly tapering heads 11 formed thereon. The heads have 0011- cave recesses 12 in their ends or tips. These glue appliers 10 are mounted on a supportmg bar 13 carried by the rod 14 reciprocating through the bracket 15. A coiled spring 16 between the bracket and the bar urges the support normally downward.
The foot-treadle 17 is connected by the link 18 to the lever 19 mounted on the post 20; this lever 19 is connected to the rod 1 1 by means of the link 21. The bracket 15 is provided with the arm 22 through which the appliers 10 reciprocate. Thus mounted the appliers may be lowered into the receptacle to submerge their heads or projected from the receptacle so that a piece of the work 8 may be brought into engagement therewith, and with a slight movement the glue is applied to the sides and ends of the mortises. The recesses in the top of the appliers will carry up a quantity of the glue so that there is suflicient to effectively coat the bottoms as well as the sides of the mortises.
it-h this means the glue is only applied within the mortise, that is, with little care it may be kept from surfaces other than those which it is desired it should reach.
Vith the aid of my machine the gluing may be very rapidly and satisfactorily accomplished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a gluing machine, the combination of a glue receptacle, a reciprocating glue applier support mounted in said receptacle, a plurality of rod-like glue appliers having downwardly tapered heads with concave tips mounted on said support so that they may be projected from the glue or lowered to submerge their heads, a guide bracket through which said glue appliers reciprocate, a spring for normally retracting said glue applier support, and actuating means for said support.
2. In a gluing machine, the combination of a glue receptacle, a reciprocating glue applier support mounted in said receptacle, a glue applier having a downwardly tapered head with a recessed tip mounted on said support so that it maybe projected from the glue or lowered into the receptacle to submerge its head, a guide bracket through which said glue applier reciprocates, a spring for normally retracting said glue applier support, and actuating means for said support.
3. In a gluing machine, the combination of a glue receptacle, a r0d-like glue applier having a head tapered from its tip, its tip having a shallow recess therein, said applier being mounted to reciprocate so that its head may be submerged in or projected from the glue and means for actuating said applier.
4;. In a gluing machine, the combination conical recess therein.
I In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
