T o all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, BERTHOLD JAHN and ERNEsT EMU. KAHL, citizensof the `United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in4 Staple-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in staple binders, and has particular reference to improvements in the staple binder'shown and described in our application filed-November 26, 1916, Serial N o. 133,357, and the object of our improvement is to incorporate in a'staple binder of the form mentioned means for positively holding the end por-v tion of the staple strip that is adjacent the plunger and the coperating cutting edge of the die portion of the die member in close association with the said die member on which it. is mounted when the staple binder is in use and thereby preventing the staple strip from being accidentally displaced from the proper vposition for being operated upon y the plunger, particularly as by Contact with the plunger in its upward return movement. l

proved staple binder.
ig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the left side plate of the frame, as viewed from the inside.
Fig. 4 is afragmentary side elevation of the right side` plate as viewed from the inside.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Flg. 2, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view on a lstill` further enlarged scale of certain parts shown in Fig. 5. t c
Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Fig 8 is a' fra entary sectional view on the line 8-,8 of ig. 6.
Fig. l9 is a side elevation, on the 'same scale as Fig. 1, ofa modified form of structure.
Fig. 10 is an inside view of the left side plate of the structure shownin Fig. 9.
F ig..11 is a fragmentary sectlonalview,
of the modified form corresponding gener-l some of the that are common with the staple binder shown and described in the application `mentioned comprise a base 10 having an anvil 11 at one end and a pairof arms 12 at the other end, in spaced relation, for pivotally connecting with a swinging member and havl ing holes for the pivotal pin 13.
The said swinging member comprises a '70, Composite structure, composed of the die member 15 that is opposed to thelbase l0 and a pair of side frame plates 14 extending upwardly from the said die member 15 and forming therewith a housing for lnclosing certain parts of the operating mechanism.
The plunger 16is operatively supported in the front part of the frame structure,.
being engaged with 'ways 17 that are provided on the side plates 14, and is normally held in elevated position by means of the spring 18.
'The plunger 16 'has on the inner side, within the housing formed by the side plates 14 a web or' tin structure 19. the upper portion 20 of which coperates with4 Opposed flanges 21 on the side plates 14 for limiting the -upward movement of the plunger responsive to the action of the spring 18, and the lower portion 22 of'which operates as a .cam device for coperating with the swinging dog 23.- ,A
The side plates 14 are formed of sheet material, and the flanges 21 are in the form of inwardly turned portions of the said sheet material.
y' The lower `end of theplunger ll-ias on the l'inner side a cutting edge 24 for coperatingv with the opposed cutting edge 25 on the end of the die member 15 'for severing the individual staples 26 from the staple strip when the plunger is .forced downwardly, the said lower end'of the plunger as the movement of the plungerl is Continued downwardly forcing the severed staple downwardly so that.
the legs or prongsA of the staple will be pushed through the papers layingiover the anvil 11 and finally clenching the staple in -coperation with the anvil 11.
The operation described is effected by" means ofa blow on thev handle 27 on the top of the plunger 16 and when .released the spring 18 raises the -plunger 16..
gDuring such return movement of the plunger 16 the staple strip is moved -forwardly so as to bring the. end staple 26 of the staple strip' into position in the path ofthe plunger 16 suitably to be operated upon'and "the mechanism for e'i'ecting such forward movement or feeding'of'the staple strip com- Yprises a holding pawl 28 that operates toprevent retrograde movementof ,the staple strip and the Afeedingpawl 29 for feeding the staple stripand that is operatively supported from the swinging .dog 23j The holding pawl 28 is pivotally supported from the side frame member 14 by. means of the pivotal pin 30 and is spring 31.
vided forpositioning the die member 15 and the side frame members or side4 plates 14 relatively vone tothe other and these parts :are
held together by means of a plurality of' screws 36. f' A The upper portion 3 7 ofthe die member 15 is reduced in width relatively to the lower i portion so as to provide a' pair of channels .-38, one on each side, for the le 4of the staples 26,.inthe usual mannelgt ve middle,
portion of thestaples 26 and the connecting a'ckbone of the 'Sta le strip resting on the l ipper face of the sai 'upper reduced portion of the die member 1'5 .-duiing'the severing operation.,
During vthe return movement of Autheplunger after having severed and clenched a staple the inner face .of the plunger isopposed to the freshly cut edge of-the staple strip and is extremely .close thereto in all .l cases and these parts may contact one with the other in case ofl a sli ht displacement of thesta-ple strip inthe dlreotion towardthe plunger. ,Such contacting is liable to result in displacing the staple strip so that 1tl would be misplaced in position on the die member 15 for proper. coperation with the vfeedlng devices so that the final result in some cases wouldbe to clog the machine. -A We nd that the diliculty outlined may be overcome by providing means v:for 'positively preventing lifting the staple strip appreciably fromthe proper operating positiony on the upper reduced portion 37 of the die member 15 on which Ait is supported and-do provided with a positioning f this the-following.mannerz-On the inhang the space of the side channels 38 for,
the legs of the staples 26 and spaced above the upper surface 40ofthe die member 15. by a space that ysuiices to permit of freeI movement of theA staple strip in 'the longitudinal directionA for proper operation and at the same time prevents appreciable liftingmovement of the\staple strip upwardly from the said upper surface '40.
As .a detail, we prefer to lform the inwardlyV directed overhanging rib 39 byl means of an indentation on the outer faceA -of theA side plates 14whieh plates, as described, are made ofsheet material.
Thus thetwo ribs 39 'coperate with the Q i upper Vface 40 of thereduced vportion 37 ofthe die member 15 to provide a way for.. Y
the upper portions of the' staples 26 and the staple stri-p generallywhichpermits of free movement inthe proper' direction ,for cooperation with the plunger and the feedin mechanism and prevents .displacement suc 'as would interfere with proper operation of the said plunger andfeedin mechanism.
In the construction described it will be noted thatl the [forward end 41 of the rib4 39 is4v opposed 4to the inner face 42 of the plunger 16, so .that by properly positioning the said rib longitudinally the said forward Y end 41- will serve as a-guide for the plunger. This isthezarrangement, with certain additional features pertaining to details that l is followed inthe structure shown in Fig. 9 and the following figures.. i
Inboth formsof structure the ide por-v tion of the frame Ais composed 'o two opposed -and inwardly directed vribs 43 that are integral with the-side frames 14.
. In the structure first described the cross 'section of the plunger 16, ,shown in Fig. .8,
is of I-beam form, comprising opposed grooves 44 for the ribs 43. By providing guide means coperating with the-inner face 42 of thefplunger it will be noted that a T- shape for the cross section of the plunger 16a-as 'shown in Fig. 13 suffices.- Thus the forward end 41, as described, serves as the guide for theplung'er '16 for the lower part thereof. v
plunger 1'6.z .are provided by the-forward v -end-portions 45 of the inwardly turned 1.2
between the inwardly turned flanges or ribs 43 and apair ofjlaterall directed anges or ribs 47 that. are ositioned between the inner faces .of the ri sv 43 and the guide means l plunger may be provided for extending vthe 'ing the said stri guide structure for coperating with lthe inner face 42 of. the plunger, such as thevertical .rib "48 adjacent the upper guide 45 and the rib 49 in line therewith'and adj acent the loweliguide 41. The last, named rib 49 l may lemerge with the rib 39 so as to form 'therewith a-'combined rib Vof right angled L form, as shown, and which is formed Fby indenting the sheetv material of the side frame plates 14. v A
The ribs 48, one on each side, are formed by indenting the material of the plates 14.
Weclalm as our invention 1. A staple binder comprisingea die having a cutting edge at one end and having a reduced portionalong one facefor slida-bly supporting a staple strip, a housing connectv ed with the said die inelosing `the said reduced portion, feeding mechanism for feedalong the said .reduced portion containe in the said housing, a plunger Aoperatively supported' by-wthe said housing, having a cutting edge for coperatf lfacesl of the said sideflanges, the .said means being inf-the form ofindented r1 s 1 n .thematerial ofthe-said side plates. q
