To all 20 hom it may con cern a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland Heights, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to driving mechanism such as is used for railway cars, for example, coke cars, charging cars, or any other railway cars operated by their own power.
The object of the invention is to provide improved driving mechanism of unit form adapted for simple attachment to the car, and which safely suspends and protects the electric motor and provides convenient access to the driving gears and shaft for purposes of. replacement, repair or inspection. A further object of the invention. is to provide. driving mechanism including a simple form of speed reducing gearing wherein the number of intermediate shafts is reduced andthe power transmitted from the motor to the car axle through a minimum number of gears, thereby reducing friction and loss of power in the gearing. Further objects of the invention are 111 part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter. p
In the drawings, which represent one suitable embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a portion of the carframe with the driving mechanism applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line 22, Fig. 1, portions being broken away to expose interior parts; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33, Fig. 2, the motor being shown in plan view.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a portion of the car frame, which may be of any suitable form or construction and requires no further description. 2 indicates one of the car axles rotatable in bearings in the frame, as is usual, and provided with a wheel 3.
The unit driving mechanism includes a suitable inclosing casing for the gearing which may also be formed to support an protect the drivin motor. In the form shown in the drawlngs said casing includes.
a body portion 4 having a semi-circular seat 5 to support an electric motor 6, an axle housing portion 7 secured to the body portion 4 at the meeting faces 8 by bolts 9, so that said body portion and axle housing portlon surround the axle 2 as shown in Fig. 2, and a cover or cap 10 for the motor which is hinged to the body portion 4 at 11 and is secured at its other end to said body portion bolts 12.
This arrangement enables the casing to be securely bolted in position around the axle and to firmly, clamp, support and protect the electric motor, as will be obvious. Preferably the body portion. 4 and axle housing portion 7 of the casing carry bear- 1ng members 13 surrounding the axle 2 and held 1n place by split collars 14, as shown in F g. 3. Consequently, the aXle 2 can rotate 1n the housing and said housing also has sl ght oscillating or self-adjusting motion about the axle with vibration of the car. To reduce the shock' and jar the other end of the casing opposite to the axle is yieldingly supported, such as by being provided with an eye 15 resting on a compression spring 16 supported by a portion of. the fixed frame 1. Above said eye is a second compression spring 17 lying beneath a collar 18 held on the end of a bolt 19 passing through said two springs, the eye 15 and the fixed frame 1. By screwing up the nuts 20 the pressure of'the two springs .16, 17 may be adjusted, and the entire mounting enables the eye 15 to vibrate back and forth on the bolt 19 against the pressure of the springs and absorb shock, jar and vibration which otherwisewould be transmitted to the motor and driving mechanism.
The motor shaft 21 at one end is providec with a driving pinion 22 held thereon by a nut 23 and washer 24, by removing which said pinion can be readily taken 0E. Said pinion is in meshing relation with a large gear 25 keyedto oneendof a shaft 26 which rotates inbearings 27 and 28 held in openings in the casing body 4. Intermediate its end said shaft has keyed thereon a pinion 29 in driving relation with a large gear 30 lying Within a hollow chamber 31 between the casing portions 4 and 7 and keyed to the axle 2.
Gear 25 is secured to the shaft 26 by a nut 32 threaded upon a reduced portion of said prevent the shaft from moving endwise out of position in the casing. The driving mechanism includes but single'intermediate shaft 26 and two pinions and two gears betweenthe motor and axle.
It is consequently simple 'and obtains the necessary speed reduction without undue loss of energy by friction in the gearing. More.
over,'the-.pinion 29 and gear 3-'O are inclosed I ina hollow casing which can serve as a reservoir for oil, grease, :or other. lubricant.
