R. n. REGAN,
CROSSHEAD. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 22. 1920. 1,386,532. Patented Aug. 2,1921.
HIW' f I I I L HIHHHHII 6 PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES RAY D. REGA1\T, OF SUSQUEHANNA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CROSSHEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed November 22, 1920. Serial No. 425,804.
quehanna, in the county of Susquehanna.
and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Crosshead, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wear compensating devices, and more particularly to a device especially designed for use and connection with cross heads, to insure the true adjustment of the cross heads to their guides, to eliminate lateral wear on the piston packing, cylinder rings and guides.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and easily adjusted by manipulating an adjusting bolt disposed, to be operated at either end of the cross head.
A further object of the invention is to provide adjusting means operating against the tension of coiled springs, to restrict move ment of the adjusting means.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodimentof the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view of a cross head showing the same as supported within its guide.
Fig. 2 illustrates a fragmental sectional View of the cross head showing the adj ustable bearing member.
Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the usual cross head, which has connection with the poston rod 6, as by means of the usual piston key.
The cross head is provided with opposed grooved portions designed to accommodate the bars 8 of the cross head guide, the grooves however being relatively wide as compared with the bars 8 to provide a clearance for the adjustable gibs 9 which support the babbit bearing members 10, the inner surfaces of the gibs 9 being provided with grooves to accommodate the ribs of the bearing members 10. thereby permitting the bearing members 10 to be readily removed and repalced when the same become worn or otherwise rendered inoperative.
These gibs 9 are relatively long, extending throughout the entire length of the cross head 5, and are provided with inclined surfaces 11, cooperating with the inclined inner surfaces 12 of the grooves of the cross head. The gibs 9 are also provided with openings registering with suitable openings provided in the cross head 5, which openings accommodate the adjusting bolts 13, which have their heads 14x contacting with the upper surface of the gibs 9, the opposite ends thereof being threaded to accommodate the nuts 15. whereby movement of the nuts 15 will result in a relative movement of the gibs 9 to adjust the same with respect to the bars 8, there being provided coiled springs 16, hearing against the gibs 9 for restricting movement of the gibs 9.
Supported by the cross head 5, are the laterally movable gilos 17, each of which supports a removable bearing member 18, the lower wall of the gibs 17 being inclined to contact with the inclined surface 19 of the cross head so that movement of the gibs 17 longitudinally of the cross head, will result in the gibs closely engaging the cross head.
Extending through each of the gibs 17 is an adjusting screw 20, which adjusting screw has connection with the cross head at one end thereof, the opposite end thereof extending beyond one of the end walls of the gib, to which the same is applied, to accommodate the lock nut 21, which bears against one end of the gib to secure the gib against movement longitudinally of the cross head.
At the opposite end of each of the adjusting screws is an adjusting nut 23 operating over the threaded portion 2 1 of the adjusting screw, there being provided a lock nut 25 cooperating with each nut 23 to further lock the adjusting screw against movement.
To further insure against movement of he adjusting screws, a locking screw 22 is associated with each adjusting screw, which locking screws extend through suitable threaded openings provided in the gib 17, the screws having openings extending transversely therethrough to accommodate the adjusting screws to prevent movement thereof.
From the foregoing it is obvious that 1. In combination with a cross head andthe guide bars supporting the same, said cross head having a groove to accommodate each guide bar, the walls of said groove being inclined to receive adjustable gibs, said gibs having inclined wallscontactmg with the inclined walls of the groove, adjusting bolts extending through the gib and cross head for adjusting the gibs with respect to the cross head, and an adjustable gib engaging the underface ofeach guide bar.
2. 111 combination with the crosshead and its guide bars, said cross head having a groove formed in each of the edges thereof,
' adjustable gibs supported within the groove and contacting with the side faces of the guide bars,an adjustable gib supported at the base of each groove, an adjusting bolt extending through the latter gibs, and means on one end of the adjustable bolts for moving the 'gibs with respect to the cross head.
3. In combination with a cross head and guide bars supporting the same, adjustable gibs associated with the cross head and havingremovable bearingmembers, said cross head having openings, said gibs having openings, bolts passing through the openings for securing the gibs to the cross head, and
resilient means disposed around the bolts and contacting with the cross head and gibs for restricting movement of the gibs with respect to the cross head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two'witnesses. i
