Description

G. RUNGE.
PRINTERS INKING ROLLER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 5. 1921.
I 1,386,427. PatentedAug. 2,1921.
' UNITED. STATES GUSTAVE RUNGE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PRINTERS INKING-BO'LLER.
Application filed March 5, 1921.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE RUNGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers linking- Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printers inking rollers and has for an object to provide a roller possessing the requisite or desired resiliency and ink distributing qualities substantially unaffected by climatic conditions and changes.
A further object of the invention is to provide an inking roller having a cushioning cylinder of such material as to provide the desired or necessary yielding resiliency substantially unaffected by climatic conditions with an inclosing envelop of material adapted for distribution of ink.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel parts, elements, arrangements, compositions, combinations and functions as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of the improved inking roller'in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a view of the improved inking roller in longitudinal diametrical section.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the improved roller.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved inking roller which forms the subject matter of this application is carried upon a shaft or core 10 which conforms to the press upon which the roller is to be used and the specific disclosure of the core in the drawing is no limitation upon the invention. Upon the core 10 a cylindrical cushion 11 is provided. This cushion 11 is preferably of rubber vulcanized to such a degree as to provide the necessary or desired yielding resiliency of the roller. While rubber has been specified it is intended to include any material or composition which will provide such de ree of yielding resiliency as is necessary or esirable in a printers roller.
As rubber or like compositions is affected.

ink, an envelop 12 of roller composition is applied to the exterior of the cushion. To wholly protect the cushion from the detrimental effects of the ink it is carried over and wholly incloses the ends of the cushion as indicated at 13, whereby the cushion 11 is wholly inclosed and protected from contact with the ink.
It has been long recognized that an efficient inking roller must possess two major characteristics, namely, yielding resiliency and ink distributing properties. The roller composition of the present date possesses all all of these properties when in prime condition. It is, however, detrimentally aflected by climatic conditions rendering the rollers at times inefficient and requiring frequent changes to correspond with the temperature and humidity of the climate.
Rubber has been tried and found to possess the necessary yielding resiliency when properly vulcanized and substantially unaffected by climatic conditions but seriously affected by contact with ink and failing in the proper distribution of the ink upon the form.
Attempts have been made to combine the two but such efforts have failed owing to the incomplete inclosure of the rubber cushion to protect it from contact with the ink. The present invention embodies the yieldingly resilient cushion with the ink distributing envelop wholly enclosing the same. The composition envelop may be of such consistency as to be useful in all climatic conditions depending upon the cushion for its yielding resiliency while presenting such a thin body as to be but little affected by climatic conditions. A sin le roller will, therefore, serve adequately t roughout the year. Furthermore, the composition envelop may be replaced when worn at a minimum eX-.
pense in view of its very inconsiderable mass.
I claim:
1. An inking roller comprising a shaft, a cushion upon the shaft and a coating of ink distributing composition entirely ensealing the cushion.
2. An inking roller comprising a cylindrical cushion, composed of material affected by printers ink, and a wholly ensealing coating of ink distributing composition.
3. An inking roller comprising a shaft, a cylindrical cushion upon the shaft composed of material detrimentally afiected by printers ink, and a coating of ink distributing composition entirely ensealing the cushion.
4. An inking roller comprising a shaft, a cushion upon the shaft composed of material substantially unafiected by climatic conditions and a coating of ink distributing com- -p0S1t10I1 entirely ensealing the cushion.
