Be it known that l, Orio M. Hoon, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and iisetul Improvements in Double- Scoring Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesA to machines for scoring paper-board, and particularly to machines ot' that class known as double-scoring machines, in which separate sheets of paperboard are fed first through primary scoring mechanism in one path and then through secondary scoring mechanism in a path at right angles to the first path to score the sheets along lines perpendicular to each other.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide an improved machine of this class in which the movement of the successive sheets through the machine will be positively controlled in a manner to prev vent interfere-nce of a sheet traveling in one path through one oi the scoring mechanisms with a sheet traveling in another path through the other scoring mechanism.

The clutch-controlling mechanism for effecting such action of the feed device embodies a tripping member which is arranged to be operated by the sheet in its passage through the primary scoring mechanism, the construction of the controlling mechanism being such that it is not rendered -e-iective to operate or throw in the feed clutch until after the releaseof the tripping member by the sheet, which takes place upon the dein general use.

The double scoring machine here shown is in many respects the same or substantially the same as corresponding machines It embodies among other parts of usual construction, a supporting frame 2, a feed table 3 fromV which sheets are fed into the machine, primary scoringl mechanism comprising the usual bed-roll 4 and cooperating scoring knives 5, a pair of i'eed rollers 6 by means of which successive sheets are fedy from the primary scoring mechanism into position for delivery to ther secondary scoring mechanism, a so-called intermediate table 7 onto which said sheets are ted from the primary scoring mechanism, a reciprocatory feed device 8 for feeding sheets from said table .7 to the secondary scoring` mechanism, and the secondary scoring mechanism 9 of similar construction and operation to that of. the primary scoring mechanism. All ot the parts of the doublev scoring machine here shown may be operated from a suitable main-driver, which in this ca'se is the shaft l0 carrying the feed rolls 1l of the secondary scoring mechanism.
The reciprocatory feed device 8 is in many respects similar to those disclosed in Patents No. 1,054,962, issued Mar. 4, 1913, No. 1,098,689, issued J une 2, 1914, and No. 1,098,711, issued June 2, 1914. The feed device proper is a relatively light plate carried by a head 15, which latter is mounted for reeiprocation in a suitable way 16 in the table 7 and is operated from a cranlr 17 on a crank shaft 18 through a connecting link 19. The crank shaft 18, which is journaled in suitable bearings at the under side of the table 7, carries a loose driving pulley 20 at its outer end which is driven through a belt 21 from a pulley 22 on the main driver 10, the crank shaft being adapted to be operated from said driving pulley 20 through a clutch member 23 splined on the shaft. This clutch member, during the passage of a sheet through the primary scoring mechanism, is held in inoperative or unclutching position whereby the feed device 8 will remain at rest. The means for accomplishing this comprises a lever 25 fulcrumed at 26 for swinging movement in a direction lengthwise of the shaft 18 and having an operative connection with the clutch member, as by means of a pin or pins on the lever engaging the grooved hub 27 of the clutch member in usual manner. This said lever connects through a link 28 with a second lever 29 carrying a pivoted pawl 30, which latter is normally in engagement with a shoulder 31 on another lever 32 having a roller 33 in engagement with a cam 34 on the shaft 18; this said cam, when positioned with its high point in engagement with the roller 33, serving to hold the clutch member 23, through the described connections, in inoperative or unclutching position with its operating spring 35 under compression. A pivot 36 mounted on the machine frame provides as support for both said levers 29 and 32.
By disengaging the pawl 30 from the shoulder 31 on the lever 32, the pawl carrying lever 29 is thereby released to free the spring 35 and permit it to advance the clutch member 23 into clutching engagement with the driving pulley 20. As a means for thus operating the pawl 30, a rock shaft 40 is provided having one arm 41 overlying a roller 42 on the pawl adjacent its free end and a second arm 43 connecting with one end of a long rod 44, which latter at its opposite or front end is connected with the lower end of a vertically arranged lever 45 mounted. on a stationary pivot 46. A coiled spring 47 surrounding this rod 44, with one end bearing against a stationary bracket 49 and its opposite end against a collar 50 fixed to the rod, is operative at a predetermined time in the operation of the machine to rock the shaft 40 and cause its arm 41 to disengage the pawl 30 from the 'shoulder 31 on the lever 32 and thereby release the lever 29 to permit of the throwing in of the clutch as hereinbefore described.
The lever 45 is normally held with the associated rocker arm 41 in raised or inoperative position and the spring 47 under compression, as shown in lFigs. 2 and 3, by means of a latch device which is mounted on a stationary pivot 56 and yieldingly held in operative latching position by a connecting spring 57. As a means for operating this latch to release the lever 45 and thereby permit operation of the parts under the action ofthe spring 47 as described, that is, the releasing of the lever 29 and throwing in of the clutch member 23, a tripping member 60 is pivoted at 61 in a supporting;` bracket 62 with its upper end projecting into the path of movement of the sheets in their passage through the primary scoring mechanism, and pivotally connected to this meinber at 63 is a latch-releasing member 64 which is constructed to move downward independently of the latch when the tripping member is depressed by an engaging sheet moving thereover, and to engage with and operate the latch when drawn upward bythe return of the tripping member to its normal raised position following the passage of the sheet thereover. This latch-releasing member 64 has a shoulder 65 adjacent its lower end which passes beneath a pin 66 on the rear arm of the latch 55 when the member 64 is moved downward by vthe depressing of the tripping member 60, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, whereby said member 64, when raised by the return of the tripping member to its normal position, will operate the latch 55 to release the lever 45. After the latch has been thus operated, it is released from the member 64 for subsequent reengagement with the lever 45, by means of a stationary pin 67 engaging` a cam surface 68 on the member 64 during the upward movement of the latter and causing said member to swing outwardly from engagement with the pin 66 on the latch, as will be clear by reference to Fig. 4. The return of the tripping member to its normal raised position following the passage of a sheet thereover, and thereby the upward movement of the connected latch releasing member 64, is effected by a spring 69 connecting with and pulling upwardly on said member 64.
The operation of the machine as thus far described, in brief, is as follows: The front edge of a sheet passing through the primary scoring mechanism engages the tripping member 60 and depresses it to the dotted line'position 'shown in Figs. 2 and 4. This lowers the connected member 64 to bring its shoulder into operative engagement with the pin 66 on the rear arm of the latch 55. Such position of the parts is maintained until a sheet has passed completely over and released the tripping member, whereupon the connected member G4 is raised under the action of the spring 69 to operate the latch 55 and release the engaged lever 45. When the latter is thus released, it permits of the operation of the spring 4T to effect a release of the lever 29 by its holding pawl 30 and the consequent throwing in of the clutch under the action of its operating spring 35. When the clutch is thus thrown in, the shaft 18 is operated to effect a reciprocation of the feed device 8 and the consequent feeding of the sheet from the intermediate table to the secondary scoring mechanism.
During the rotation of the shaft 18 following the throwing in of the clutch, the cam 34 is turned to bring its low point opposite the roller 33 on the lever 32 and thereby permit a forward movement of the latter, under the action of a connecting spring 70, suiiicient to bring its shoulder 31 in advance of the pawl 3() for the rengagement of the latter therewith. Following such rengagement, the continued rotation of the cam again brings its high point into engagement with the roller 33 and thereby returns the connected parts to the positions shown, with the clutch withdrawn and the machine brought to a stop.
A return of the lever 45 to its normal position of engagement by the latch 55, with the spring 47 under compression and the rock arm 41 raised from engagement with the roller 42 on the pawl 30, is also effected by the cam 34 acting through a series of operative connections with the shaft 40, these connections comprising a lever 71 mounted on the pivot 3G and having a roller 72 for engagement by said cam, and an arm T3 fixed to the shaft 40 and connected with said lever 71 through a link 7 4. Movement of the lever 71 by the cam 34 in a direction toward the right, as viewed in Fig. 2, will rock the shaft 40 in a direction to move the rod 44 toward the left and thereby place the spring 47 imder compression and at the same time rock the lever 45 into latching engagement with the latch device 55.
1n order that the rod 44 may not be moved so quickly under the influence of the spring 44 cause a slamming of the parts brought into engagement thereby, a second spring 8O is employed for neutralizing the action of said spring 47, this spring SO being connected at one end with the rocker arm 43 and at its opposite end with a stationary part of the frame, as at 81.
That I claim is:
1. In a machine of the. class described, the combination with a clutch and clutch-controlling mechanism, of a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip member adapted to be actuated by a moving sheet, means for returning upon the releasing of the latter, as tol said member to its normal position upbn the passage of the sheet thereover, and means operative upon the return movement of the trip member to release the said latch and thereby permit engagement of the clutch.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a clutch and clutch-controlling mechanism, of a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip member adapted to be actuated by a moving sheet, means for returning said member to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thereover, and means connected with the trip member for movement therewith, said means being operative upon the return movement of the trip member to release the said latch and thereby permit engagement of the clutch.
3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a clutch and clutch-controlling mechanism, of a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip lever adapted to be actuated by a moving sheet, means for returning said lever to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thereover, and a member pivotally associated with thetrip lever for movement therewith, said member being operative upon the return movement of the trip lever to release the said latch and thereby permit engagement of the clutch. a
4. 1n a machine of the class described, the combination with a clutch and clutch-controlling mechanism, of a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip lever adapted to be actuated by a moving sheet, means for returning said lever to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thereover, and a member associated with the trip lever for movement therewith, said member moving independently of the latch upon the forward movement of the trip lever and being operative to engage with and release said latch upon the return movement of the trip lever.
5. 1n a machine of the class described, the combination with a clutch and clutch-controlling mechanism, of a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a triplever adapted to be actuated by a moving sheet, means for returning said lever to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thercover, a member pivotally connected with the trip lever for movement therewith, said member having .a shoulder for engaging with and subsequently releasing the latch upon the return movement of the trip lever, and a stationary part coacting with said latch-releasing member and controlling its engagement with and disengagement from the latch.
6. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a clutch and clutch-controlling mechanism, of a latch normall maintaining said mechanism with the clutcli released, a trip lever adapted to be actuated by a moving sheet, means for returning said lever to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thereover7 a latch releasing member pivotally connected with the trip lever for movementtherewith, said member being operative upon the return movement of the trip lever to engage with and release said latch, and controlling means for effecting engagement and disengagement between the latch-releasing member and the latch.
7. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a clutch and clutch-controlling mechanism, of a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip lever adapted to be actuated by a moving sheet, means for returning said lever to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thereover, a latchreleasing member pivotally connected with the trip lever for movement therewith, said member being operative upon the return movement of the trip lever to engage with and operate said latch, means for disengaging said member from the latch following the latch-releasing operation, and means for subsequently returning the latch to latching position. Y

In a double scoring machine, the combination with primary and secondary scoring mechanisms, a table therebetween, a feed device for feeding a sheet from said table to the secondary scoring mechanism, and a. clutching mechanism by which said feed device is connected with the driving power, of a clutch-controlling mechanism, a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip member arranged in the path ofl a sheet in its movement from the primary scoring mechanism to position for engagement by the feed device, said trip member being adapted to be actuated by the sheet during such movement of the latter, means for returning said member to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thereover, and means operative upon the return movement of the trip member to release the said latch and thereby permit engagement of the clutch.
9. In a double scoring machine, the combination with primary and secondary scoring mechanisms, a table therebetween, a feed device for feeding a sheet from said table to the secondary scoring mechanism, and a clutching mechanism by which said feed device is connected with the driving power, of a clutch-controlling mechanism, a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip member arranged in the path of a sheet in its movement from the primary scoring mechanism to position for engagement by the feed device, said trip member being adapted to be actuated by the sheet during such movement of the latter,
means for returning said member to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thereover, and means connected with the trip member for movement therewith, said means being operative upon the return movement of the trip member to release the said latch and thereby permit engagement of the clutch.
10. In a double scoring machine, the combination with primary and secondary scorf ing mechanisms, a table therebetween, a feed device for feeding a sheet from said table to the secondary scoring mechanism, and a clutching mechanism by which said feed device is connected with the driving power, of a clutch-controlling mechanism, a latch normally maintaining said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip lever arranged in the path of a sheet in its movement from the primary scoring mechanism to position for engagement by the feed device, said trip lever being adapted to be actuated by the sheet during such movement of the latter, means for returning said lever to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet there-- over, and a member pivotally connected with the trip lever for movement therewith, said member moving independently of the latch upon the forward movement of the trip lever and being operative to engage with and release said latch upon the return movement of the trip lever.
ll. In a double scoring machine, the combination with primary and secondary scoring mechanisms, a table therebetween, a feed device for feeding a sheet fromsaid table to the secondary scoring mechanism, and a y clutching mechanism by which said feed device is connected with the driving power, of a clutch-controlling mechanism, a latch normally maintaining Said mechanism with the clutch released, a trip lever arranged in the path of a sheet in its movement from the primary scoring mechanism to position for engagement by the feed device, said trip lever being adapted to be actuated by the sheet during such movement of the latter, means for returning said lever to its normal position upon the passage of the sheet thereover, a member pivotally connected with the trip lever for movement therewith, said member moving independently of the latch upon the forward movement of the trip lever and having a shoulder for engaging with and releasing the latch upon the return movement of the trip lever, and means coacting with said latch-releasing member and controlling its engagement with and disengagement from the latch.
