of the-co a 21 the lampsto-nbrmelitelna l tendency of'the voltage totfallbloil normel" controlled by solenoid 1'1 and that on lorer 36 co-acts with a voltage solenoid 39 connected as shown. V
,(onsidering the action of the solenoid l1 and the parts ansrwiutcdtherewith, and assuming that at a given stage the efi 'eci ot: variations in the old strength of solenoid 39 is negligible it will be seen that any tendency to vsrmtion in thecurrent flowing in the coil ll will remedy itself by a.
' corresponding variation in the resistance of the element 3 and corresponding increase or diminution of thergmemtor field strength. Thus. with the pa set for'a given oyera- 't i0n. the coil 11 will tend to mainnun in itself ll-- substantially constaut ohrrent.
With the parts in the position shoi'in'in full lines in .the' drawings, thecoil 11- is traversed hy the current flowing through the battery, and 'sccordin mined constant, and tie lamp cunent when in dotted lines in the lamps are turned onus'by the switch 14, V *will be added flowing both through-the battery'and the lampsif current -termi.ned fraction-of its-total value passing through-the solenoid. and the remainder the lam are learned on. As this will divide with a certain cw-eclethrough the resistance 32, it will be seen that the total current will be maintained" con- "staht- This follows from the fact that if a 40 'ven' fraction of any quantity is a constant, t e quantity itself is e constant. By suitable adjustment of. the resistance 32, moreoveri the amount of current flow" through coj 11 with the contact member In the position indicated in dotted lines, may be made sub-- sta-ntially equal to'that flowing through this solenoid when the switch member is in the position indicated in full lines. In this parts may act readjustment of the parts is the solenoid with associated through their most efilcient and effective range. This isoi especial value in a parotus such as that herein set 'iiich the generator field resistance is itl'ected by other mechanism such as that controlled by the voltage coil 39 as the manner, no required, and
' relative effect of these two solenoids is substunt total current 0 stantiall unchanged.
It wil thus be seen that by the more throwing of the switch member 25, the entire system may be changed from constant battery cbargingcurrent operation to conation, or 1; reverse.
