Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRISON ZIMMERMAN, OF HUDSON, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-CAR SPITTCONS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 138.464, dated April 29, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. J. ZIMMERMAN, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Railroad-Car Spittoons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theconstruction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part oi' this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation ot' a front view of my spittoon. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
My invention relates to an improved spittoon for railroad cars; and it consists in a covered bowl attached to the side of the car and provided with a waste-pipe for carrying off the contents through the Iioor of the oar.
In the drawing, A represents a panel of the side of the car between two seats. B is a bowl, in the form of a quarter of an oblong spheroid, attached to the panel A in such a manner that one of the iiat sides is in a horip zontal position and the other ilat side in a verin the door of the car, so as to carry oi' the contents of the bowl to a point below the bottom of the car. The bowl is attached to the panel by screws passing through lugs Z, and a iiange, f, formed on the vertical fiat side; and the pipe O'may be strengthened in its attachment by staples or hooks driven into the panel in the usual manner. The bowl and cover and the pipe are faced with porcelain on the inside to prevent rust and corrosion, the parts being made of iron or other suitable metal. Aspittoon thus arranged and constructed may be utilized as a shelf for holding travelers garments, baskets, and various other effects, and it may also be used as a table.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t The spittoon B provided with the cover b and connecting with the pipe G for depositing the contents outside and below the car, the parts being made of metal and lined with porcelain, and attached to the panel of the car, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HARRISON J. ZIMMERMAN.
