ALLEN PARKER "WILSON, OF WALT'HAM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGN'OR TO BOSTON PEN GIL POINTER COMPANY, OF .Tl/illil OF MASSACHUSETTS.
HAM, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION METHOD OF MAKING OUTTERS EOE PEIICIL-SHARPENERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed April 21, 1919. Serial No. 291,522.
1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALLEN P. VVILSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of lValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Methods of Male ing Cutters for Pencilfiharpeners, of which the following; is a. specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the method of making cutters tor pencil sharpeners with the object in view of providing a hollow cutter which is developed from sheet metal.
Another object is to provide a cutter of this character in which a sheet metal blank of rectangular form is distorted to produce one or more pencil sharpening ribs and the blank then being curved and its side edges united to form a tube having the sharpening rib or ribs arranged straight and exteriorly thereon.
A practical. embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a piece of sheet metal from which a blank for my improved cutter is taken.
Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the same.
Fig. 3 represents a. plan view of the blank distorted to produce the pencil sharpening ribs thereon.
Fig. 4 represents a section taken in the plane of the line IV'IV of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 represents a side view of the cutter as it appears when curved into cylindrical form, the straight exterior pencil sharpening ribs being arranged longitudinally thereon.
Fig. 6 represents an end view of the same.
Fig. 7 represents a central section of the same.
Fig. 8 represents a horizontal section taken in the plane of the line VIlL-VIH of Fig. 5 looking in the direction of the arrows.
The cutter comprises a tube 1 shown cylindrical in the present instance and it is produced as follows:
A blank 2 of rectangular form is cut from a piece of sheet metal 3 and is distorted by stamping, rolling, or otherwise to produce thereon pencil sharpening ribs 4: which project outwardly from the surface of the blank. These sharpening ribs are formed parallel to the side edges'6 so that when the blank is curved into its tubular form, the straight exterior sharpening ribs will be arranged longitudinally thereon with the abutting side edges 6 meeting at a point-between two sharpening ribs as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The side edges 6 may be permanently united by any well known or approved means.
The curving of the blank into tubular form may be accomplished by any suitable device of well known or approved type.
It is to be understood that after the above operations are completed the tube may be hardened by any well known or approved process, and it so desired the straight sharpcnino; ribs may be suitably sharpened.
What I claim is:
1. The method oi. producing sheet metal cutters for pencil Sharpeners comprising distorting a sheet metal blank to produce one or more pencil sharpening ribs, curving the blank into a tube having the rib or ribs arranged straight and erteriorly thereon, and unitingthe meeting edges of the blank.
.2. The method or" producing sheet metal cutters for pencil sharpeners comprising distortinga sheet metal blank to produce one or more pencil sharpening ribs, curving the blank into tube having the rib or ribs ar ranged straight and exteriorly thereon, uniting; the meeting edges of the blank and sherpeningrsaid ribs.
The method of producing sheet metal cutters tor pencil sharpeners comprising distortingr a sheet metal blank of rectangular form to produce one or more pencil sharpening ribs, curvino; the blank into a tube hav ing: the rib or ribs arranged straight and exteriorly thereon, and uniting the meeting edges of the blank and sharpening said ribs.
4. The method of producing sheet metal cutters tor pencil sharpeners comprising distorting a sheet metal blank of rectangular form to produce one or more pencil. sharpenribs. curving the blank into a tube havingthe rib or ribs arranged straight and exteriorly thereon. uniting the meeting edges of the blank and sharpening said ribs.
In testimony. that I claim the foregoing as my invention. I have signed my name this let-th day of February 1919.
"ALLEN PARKER WILSON.
