IMPROVEMENT m EXTENSION STEP-LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,234, dated Ap1il29, 1873; application filed October 28, 1872.

The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of extension step-ladders, and is designed as an improve ment upon the extension step-ladder secured to me by Letters Patent dated the 5th day of May, A. D. 1868, to which Letters Patent reference may be had.
In the drawing, A represents the ladder provided with two-part steps, and with the extension parts operating in grooves, as described in the above-named Letters Patent. To the top of the outside pieces of the ladder is fastened the plate B, carrying a latch, a, so arranged that as the extension is moved upward the inner end of the latch will rest against the outer face of the extension and enter holes I) therein provided for that purpose, and hold the extension at the desired point. 0 is a metallic bracket cast generally in the form shown, which need not be. particularly described, as it is not claimed herein. K is a cord, the two ends of which are secured to the legs F or to the braces thereof, while the center, forming a loop, is secured, removably, to a hook, it, secured to the under side of one of the steps, for the purpose of preventing the ladder from spreading when in use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with the ladder A and extension E thereof, the plate B and latch a, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The cord K, in combination with the series of hooks h h, attached to the steps of the ladder A, and the extensible legs F G, substantially as described.
