ATOMIZING DEVICE FOR IN TERNAL-GOMBUSTION ENGINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jonas MAURICE MEYER, engineer, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Atomizing Device for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification. V
The invention relates to means for in j ecting, during the working of an explosion engine and preferably when the said engine attains a determined temperature, in the cylinder or the cylinders of the said engine a determined amount of atomized water.

Figure 1 shows a vertical section of an injecting apparatus constructed according to the invention.

Fig. 3 shows in vertical sectlon a part of a modification of the said injecting apparatus.
0n the drawing, 1 is the body or casing of the apparatus; the lower part of the said body being internally screw-threaded for receiving a screw plug 2. The said plug is provided with a shoulder 3 and a screwthreaded end 3 which is to be screwed on the suction pipe of the engine, between the engine and the carbureter. The upper part of the body 1 is also internally screw-threaded. In this screw-threaded part is screwed a screw a provided with a jam nut P.
The water is fed to the apparatus through a pipe 5 opening in an axial bore 6 of the body 1. The walls of the body 1 are provided on one side with an opening 7 for the passage of a lever 8, and on the other side with two openin s separated by a projection 10, as shown in ig. 2, to which projection the lever 8 is hinged by means of a bolt 11.
On the Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings the lever is shown as having the form of a fork, the ends of the two branches of the said fork being hinged to the projection 10. The other end of the lever is provided with a hole in which is fixed one of the ends of a spring 12; the other end of the said spring 12 being fixed to a washer 13 engaged on the screw at and maintained in its position by the amnut 4 In the body is mounted the feeding device let; the upper part of which is constituted by a stem engaging in the axial bore 6 and provided with longitudinal grooves 15'. said grooves are of suitable depth, but their through the pipe 5 to flow down through the axial bore 6.
The feeding device comprises in its middle part a collar 16 which is embraced by the two branches of the lever 8, and at its lower part a head 18 having its upper part of hemispherical form and its lower part of conical form. A disk 17 provided in its center with a hole is mounted in the body and is fixed between the said body and the nut 2. The said disk is used as a seat for the hemispherical part of the said head 18.
The screw 4c has a sufiicient' length for allowing the control of the feeding of water through the pipe 5.
The openings in the walls of body l are used as air-holes.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the lever 8, instead of having two branches embracing a collar 16 of the device 14: passes through a hole 16 provided in the said device.
It is obvious that when the engine is running, if the pipe 5 is connected to a water tank mounted at a suitable level and if the lever 8 is actuated for moving the device let downward, the water flows through the grooves 15 and falls on the head 18. The lever S is acted upon by a system of interconnected levers and links (not shown) adapted to be operated from the drivers seat of the motor vehicle. The said head being lowered, air can pass through the hole of the disk 17 and, for each suction stroke of the engine, water will be drawn into the cylinder or cylinders. As soon as the said lever is released, it is returned by the spring 12 to its normal position, and the device 14 is moved therewith until the head 18 bears on the disk 17 and closes the hole of the said disk.
Having now particularly described and ascertained my invention, and in what mannor the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a casing adapted to be connected to the suction pipe of an internal combustion engine, said casing having a water inlet, a bore communicating therewith, and a valve cage having air openings formed therein, a feeding device in said casing having a stem located in said bore, said stem being provided with tapered grooves and a valve head connected to said stem for controlling communication between said valve cage and the suction pipe and means for moving said valve head and stem to permit the suction of the engine to draw air through said openings and to expose the tapered parts of said grooves t0 the action of said air whereby the water contained therein may be atomized and mixed with the fuel mixture in the suction pipe.

A device of the class described comprising a two part casing one of said parts ada Jted to en 'a 'e the suction )i 3e of an internal combustion engine and the other part having a longitudinal bore, a water inlet and air openlngs formed therein, a plate located between said parts having a valve seat, avalve adapted to engage said seat, a stem having longitudinally tapered grooves projecting from said valve and extending 20 into said bore, and means acting on said stem for opening and closing said valve and simultaneously exposing or covering said grooves.
