ATTORNEY UNITED STATES fATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE wnrenatr, or, noneon mus, NEW YORK.
DEVICE ronmrxnvs mirnamrs.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, 'GEORGEWHIGELT, a
citizen of the UnitedStates, and resident of Dongon Hills, in the county of Richmond and State ofNew York, have inventeda certain new and useful Devic'e for Mixing Materials, of which the following is a specification, the same being afull, clear, andexact descriptionofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates, to apparatus for 'mixing liquid or semi-liquid material, as
paste, paint, calcimine, color, filler, or similar substances of this type in which the mechanism is adapted for use with, and capable for application to, an ordinary receptacle, as a bucket or other container, and it has for one object to provide a mechanically operated device which is readily adaptable either for permitting-heavy material to be slowly mixed or agitated, or for causing light material to mix or agitate faster, or at a greater rate of speed.
Another object of the invention comprises the use of a detachable propeller so that differently proportioned propellers may be substituted one for the other and the device consequently used with receptacles of various dimensions.
A further object is to provide a mechanically operated device which is readily portable, and which is simple in structure and efficient in operation.
WVith these and other novel and useful objects and purposes, which will be described below, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts hereinafter set forth and shown in the drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention, and Fig. 2 a plan View of my propeller.
Referring specifically to the drawing which represents an elevation of a device constructed according to, and embodying one example of, my invention, the reference numeral 1 denotes an upright standard mounted on a suitable base 2. The upper portion or arm 3 of the standard extends horizontally over the base, the standard also having a preferably horizontal bracket 4 positioned beneath the arm 3, the latter two parts being preferably connected by a suitable device as a post 5.
Above the free end of the arm 3 is preferably positioned a threaded fastening elethe base, being adjusting devic 7.

ment 17. In the free ends of the arm 3 and bracket 1 are formed bearings for a vertical rod 8 having keyed to the latter respectively large and small bevel gears 9 and 10, the said gears being adjustably held to the rod 8 by screws 7. carried by the hubs 6 of said gears, the height of the rod, and the propeller 12'carriedby the same, as regards adjustably regulated by the In the standard 1andpost 5 are formed bearings respectively for theshafts 13 and 14 which respectively'carry fixed bevel gears 15 and 16 which are constructed and arranged to mesh with the adjustable bevel gears 9 and 10. The gear 15 is preferably made of a comparatively largesize andcooperates and coa'ctswith the small gear 10,
while the gear16 is respectively smaller in size and cooperates and coacts with the gear 9 which is preferably larger in diameter than the gear 10.
The shafts 13 and 14 are preferably constructed and arranged to be alternately operated by suitable means, such for example, for large power actuated apparatus, by pulleys as ordinarily employed for that purpose, or, in small portable devices, by manually actuated means, as in the present instance by the employment of a crank 17.
When it is desired to permit heavy material slowly to mix and agitate, I preferably operate the shaft 14; by the crank 17, whereby the gear 16 will operate the gear 9 at a comparatively slow speed. When, however, it becomes desirable to mix the body of material in the receptacle 19 at a greater rate of speed, or when it is deemed advantageous to permit light material to mix or agitate faster, I operate the shaft 13 by the crank 17, whereby the small gear 10 of the .rod 8 will be caused to rotate at a higher rate of speed by means of its cooperation or coaction with the relatively larger gear 15, by which arrangement the propeller 18 may be rotated at different rates of speed by operating the fixed gears 13 and 14 alternately.
It will be noted that when one fixed gear, as the gear 16, is rotated, its coacting adjustable gear 9 on the rod 8 will rotate and operate in unison therewith, while the other adjustable rod gear 10 will rotate its coacting fixed gear 15 at a different and lower rate of speed, the latter then serving to steady the motion of the first named rod gear. The increased mixing power of my device saves enough time and energy over methods here- I tofore used to commend itself to all users of such devices, whlle when in continuous use with materials of difi'ering character it I requires only the cleaningof the propeller, besides which it permits the use of a receptacle 19 from which the mixed material-may I I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the particular use or the exact detailsof construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art. V a
What I claim as myinvention is 1. In a device of the class described, a stand, a rod supported thereb'yin amovable relation, relatively large and small gears mounted on the rod, a shaft carrying a small gear to mesh with the said large gear, ashaft carrying a large gear to mesh with the first named small one, and means to operate either shaft at will. i g
j 2., In a device of the class described, a stand, a rod supported thereby in .a movable relation, relatively large and small adjustable gears mounted on the rod, a shaft carrying a fixedsmall gear to mesh with the said large "stand, a r'od supported thereby in a movable relation and adjustable in height thereon, means to hold the rod in adjusted position, respectively large and small gears encircling the rod, means on the stand to hold said gears in their operative vertical positions, a shaft gears mounted on the rod, a shaft carrying a :fixedsmall gear to mesh with the said large gear, a shaft carrying a fixed large gear to mesh with the first named small one, and
,means to operate either shaft at will, and also means toqoperate either fixedgear and its oocarrying a small gear to mesh with the said acting gear-on the rod, whereby the other gear on the rodfwill rotate its co-acting fixed gear at a different rate of speed, the latter serving to steady the motion of the first named rodgear. 1
