tion.
The invention relatesto a miter'box and. more particularly to" the class of miter frames for use with hack'saws 'forcutting pipes, bars or the like. i f
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a frame of this character, wherein the same will receive a pipe or bar,
the latter being held in placeby hand-or by mechanical means, so that the pipe or bar can be cut at the proper angle or'cut in two sections, as the hack's'aw is guided'in the frame through a kerf or slot formedtherein,
therebyenablingthe accurate cutting of the pipe or barso as'to *shear-thesame square without bending in the ends and thus avoiding the reducing of'the capacity of the pipe when being cut.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a box orframe of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in form so that the same can be readily applied to a pipe, bar or the like to be cut, and when thereon will enable the firm gripping of the pipe, bar or the like and the frame so as to avoid any possibility of relative displacement of either the box or frame and the pipe, bar or the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a box or frame of this character, wherein the bar or the like can be prop- V With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
Specification of meets Patent. 1. I Patented In' 'the' accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the miter box or frame constructed in accordance with the invention showingfjthe same in position relative to 'api-p'e to be cut andthe hack saw engaged in the box or frame "in cutting position. 7 v
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the pipe showing the miter-box orframethereon'.
Fig. 3? is an end elevation showing-the mi ter box or frame bridging the pipe. Similar reference characters indicate corbeing of the ordinary well known construction, while the miter box; B will be ihereinafter fully described.
' The miter box comprises a substantially V-shaped frame or "body 5, preferably made from metal, although the same may be made 7 from any other suitable material and when applied to the work to be cut is inverted as is clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and. 3 of the drawing. The frame or body 5 includes side portions 6 which are for a major portion of their length cutaway to provide finger recesses 7 for accommodating the fingers and the thumb of the hand of the user when the frame or body 5 is applied to the pipeA, bar or other piece of work to be out by the hack saw 0 in the manner as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The frame or, body 5 on oppositesides of the recesses 7 constitute guides 8 and 9 respectively, the guide 8 beingof considerably greater size than the guide 9 and in this said guide 8 transversely of the frame or body 5 is a kerf or slot 10 of a size to accommodate the blade of the saw C, as shown inserted in the kerf or slot 10 of the miter box or frame in Fig. 1 of the drawing, to permit recipro- V cation of the blade of the saw in the 'opera- 7 tion thereof for the severing of the pipe A,
bar or other like piece of work.
It is of course to be understood thatthe kerf or slot 10 can be disposed in true transverse position through. the body 5 of the miter box or frame yet the said kerf or slot can be disposed at any desired angle according to. the nature of the cut to be made in the bar or the like in the use of the miter box for the severing of said pipe, bar or the like, either at an angle or stra ght across the same as the occasionmay require.
The miter box in the constructionthereof is especially adaptable in cutting pipes, iron" or otherlike pieces of work and the same is applied thereto in the manner as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, so that the hand of the operator of the saw can grip the miterabox through the. looprecesses 7 and also the-piece of workdisposed Within the box, thelatter being inbridging relation ito thework, thus itbeingseen that the work and the miter box will be firmly held against displacement ;so that theuhacksaw when operated in the kerf or slot 10 will be guided for the severing of the work. If found .ex-
pedient the miter box in the construction as hereinbefore set forth can clamp a piece of work in any desirable manner otherthan the hand clamping thereof as isillustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
It is of courseto be understood that changes, variations and jmodificatiotns may be made in this invention, such as come properly within the ,scope of the appended,
cla1ms, without departingfrom the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of: itsadvantages. a 4 U a 1 It is thought that the construction and manner of use of the miter box will be clearly understood and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 5 A miter box of the character described, comprising a substantially 'V-shaped frame adapted to be inverted for bridging a piece adapted, to be inverted forbridging a piece of work and having a kerftherein for guiding a hack saw operated forsevering the piece of work, the frame being provided with finger recesses in the sides thereof to effect a hand grip on the frame and piece of work when the said frameqis in inverted bridging relation to the work.
V 3. A miter box comprising a body, having a V-shaped space for receiving a piece of work, said frame being formed with a kerf versely to the longitudinal extent thereof, said frame being: further formed with re cesses to accommodatethe'fingers and thumb of the hand of a user for the gripping of saidtfr ameiand a pieceof Work when posed within the V-sha ed s ace.
