PLEASURE-RAILWAY STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June '7, rear.
Application filed November 6, 1920. Serial No. 422,116.
1 all to 710922. it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN A. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Homewood, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pleasure-Railway Structures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pleasure railway structures and particularly to improved seating construction and arrangement in the vehicles for such structures.
l'leretofore, the vehicles in pleasure railway structures of the class referred to have been provided with a number of cross seats, each capable of holding a number of persons, the persons sitting side by side. In accordance with my present invention, seats extend longitudinally of the vehicle so that persons may sit one directly behind the other. Preferably two seat sections are provided in each vehicle with the rear wall of the vehicle forming a back for the rear seat section, and the front seat section being directly in front of the rear seat section, suificient space being provided between the seat sections and the sides of the vehicle for accommodating the feet or legs of the seat section occupants. lVith this arrangement the person in the rear seat can securely hold the 4 person in the front seat section. Guard rails are further provided for protecting the car occupants.
Us the accompanying sheet of drawing, I
have shown my improved arrangement. On this drawing-- L Figure 1 is a side elevatlonal view of a section of track structure with my improved vehicle thereon and Fig. 2 is a sectional viewof the track structure with. the vehicle shown in front elevation.
On the drawing F represents the support.
ment from the main rail section by the guard rail sections 7. The wheels have the flanges 9 at their inner sides for cooperating with the lnner ends of the rail structures tb limit the side play of the vehicle. Preferably wearing plates or bars 10 and 11 respectively are secured onthe main rail sections and the guard rail sections. Overhanging the rail structures are the running or guard boards 12 which extend from the sides of the vehicle body 5.
The back wall 13 rises from the vehicle body and has upholstering 14 in order to provide a back rest for the seat section 15 on which is provided-the cushion 16. ,Directly in front of the seat section 15 is the seat section 17 provided with the cushion 18. In order to be more comfortable the seat sections are inclined slightly downwardly and backwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The back section'13 forms a back rest for the person sitting on seat section 15 and this person inturn forms a back rest for the person sitting on seat section 17, and the person in the rear seat can securely hold the person in the front seat section.
At intervals foot rests 19, 20 and 21 are provided so that the occupants can sit with their legs extended or bent at the knees. The seat sections are of less width than the width of the vehicle body so as to provide aisles 22, and 23 between the seat sections and the vehicle sides as clearly shown in 2. These aisles permit the persons to readily reach their seats. The rear foot rests 19 extend across the aisles. while the foot rests 20 and 21in front ofthe seat sections may be in the form of bars extending across the vehicle body and secured in the sides thereof.
At the front end of the vehicle body is the dash board 24, and posts 25 and 26 rise at the front corners of the vehicle and are connected by the cross rail 27 at their upper ends. To the rear of these posts and in front of the seat sections are the posts 28 and 29 between which andthe back section 13 extend rails 30 which afford supportinghold for the seat section occupants. As shown, the rails 30 deflect upwardly at their front ends before reaching the posts 28 and 29. Persons can readily enter the vehicle through the spaces between the posts 25, 28 and 26, 29 and then by means of the aisles 22 and 23 they can readily seat theselves on the respective seat sections. The person in the front seat section can obtain rigid. support by engaging one of the foot rails and by holding on to the supporting rails 30, while the person in the rear seat may engage with any of the foot bars and with his hands either hold on to the rails'30 or hold on to the person in the front seat section.
The main idea of my invention is to provide sets of seats each comprising a rear seat section with a back rest and a front seat section so that two persons can sit one in front of the other closely together. There may, of course, be only one such seat set in the vehicle, as shown on the drawing, or a vehicle may have a number of such seat sets. Preferably however each vehicle is provided only with one of such seat sets and a number of vehicles are coupled together to form a train.
I do not desire to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described as changes and modifications can 1. In a vehicle for pleasure railways of the class described, the combination of the vehicle body, vehicle wheels, seat sections placed one directly in front of the other between the sides of the vehicle body, there being space at the sides of said seat sections whereby persons may sit astraddle the respective seat sections with their bodies close together and with theirlegs alongside of said seat sections.
2. In a vehicle for pleasure railways of the class described, the combination of the vehicle body, vehicle wheels, seat sections placed one directly in front of the other between the sides of the body, a back forthe rear seat section, there being space alongside of the seat sections for accommodating the legs of the seat occupants, the arrangement being such that persons may sit astraddle said seat sections with their bodies close together so that one person may securely hold the person in front of him.
3. In a vehicle for pleasure railway structures of the class described, the combination of the vehicle body, vehicle wheels, seat sec tions placed one directly in front of the other between the sides of the vehicle body,
a back for the rear seat section, the seat sections being inclined slightly rearwardly and downwardly, there being space between said seat sections and the vehicle body sides for accommodating the legs of the seat occupants, the arrangement described permitting persons to sit astraddle the respective seat sections with their bodies close together and with their legs alongside of the seat sections.
4t. In a vehicle for pleasure railways of the class described, the combination of the vehicle body, vehicle wheels, a low seat plat form xtending longitudinally of said body between the sides thereof providing individual seat sections, one directly in front of the other, a back for the rear seat section, there being space between said platform and the vehicle body sides for accommodating the legs of the seat section occupants, the arrangement described permitting persons to sit astraddle the respective seat sections with their bodies close together and with their legs alongside of said platform where by the occupants may securely hold and support each other during rapid travel of the vehicle.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 1st day of November, A. D.
JOHN A. MILLER.
