Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 7, 1919. Serial No. 295,366.
.useful Improvements in Card-Raising Attachments for Filing-Drawers; and I kdo declare the following to-be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artv'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, whichrform` a part of this specification. a
My invention relates broadly to improvements in filing drawers or boxes, and more specifically to an attachment therefor for raising the cards employedV in such drawers in order to facilitate the removal of a card or cards from any desired part of the drawer. It is well known that there is considerable diiiiculty in. removing a card from `a filing drawer of this kind where the cards are all on the same level, as the cards are usuallyrpressed together with considerable force, making the separation of thedesired card troublesome..
w My improvement. consists in providing any desired location in thedrawer in order that the desired card or cards may be easily obtained.
The device consists of a small frame, guided and longitudinally' slidable in the lower part of the box, this frame being ac tuated and controlled by a stem or rod which is exposed at the front end of the box and 1s rotatably mounted, the portion of the rod connected with the frame having a crank Aarm which, when the rod is given a partial rotation, acts upon a plate hingedly connected with the frame, to tilt the plate and impart a corresponding upward movement to the cards immediately above the plate.
Having briefly outlined my improvement, I will proceed toV describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof. In this drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of a filing drawer equipped with my improvement.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, with one side of the box partly broken away, and showing the improvement in the card-raising position.
Figs. 3 and 4L are fragmentary detail views .of the device Lshown .in connection with the guides for the frame.
Fig. 5 is a top ,plan view of the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the-hinged plate Ybeing partly broken away.
Fig. 6 is a section taken through the drawer, illustrating a follower located in the rear of the cards,"the follower being shown in connection with the card-raising attachment.`
The same reference characters indicate the samefparts in all the views. f
Yis located" a strip 8, grooved as shown at 9,
the said'V grooved strips being adapted to receive lugs, 10, with which the rear portion of a triangular-shaped wire frame 12 is provided. This frame is composed `of a transverse member 1 3, and two forwardly projecting members, '14, which approach each other and are mergedA in the reinforced forward extremity 15 of the frame. A rod 16 is journaled in this frame and passes through a perforation in the part 15, and also in the transverse member 13, which is also reinforced for the purpose. The forward portion of the rod passes through an opening in the front end ofthe drawer and is slidable therein. The rod 16, between the points where it is journaled in the wire frame, is formed into a crank arm 17, while a lifting plate 18 is hingedly connected with the frame member 13, as shown at 19, the said plate being preferably 'of triangular shape, and when in the down position, con cealing the wire frame in plan view.
As the frame 12 is freely slidable in the drawer, it is evident that the frame may be moved to any desired position for `the purpose of raising a portion of the cards, this operation being accomplished by imparting a partial rotary movement to the part 16, whereby the crank arm 17 is caused to act on the plate 18 from below to lift the plate or tilt it upwardly from its rear extremity,` where it is hinged to the frame.
As the rod or stem 16 takes the place of the usual guide rod for the follower in drawers of this character, it becomes necessary to provide a special follower for use in connection with my improvement. Hence l have illustrated a suitable device of this character (see Figs. 2 and 6), the same consi sting of a follower member 20, with which is connected a spring 21, having a coil at its upper extremity, as shown at 22, from which two arms 23 extend downwardly and merge into-horizontal parts 24.-, which pass through openings` in the opposite sides of the f0l lower member, the extremities of these Vparts 2d extending into grooves 25 in the opposite sides of the box, `iust above the strips 18, which form the guides for my improved adinstable frame. rlhe parts 23 of the spring are provided .with rearwardly projecting arms 2G, which may be grasped by the thumb and finger when it is desired to adjust the follower. By pressing inwardly on these arms, the follower will be released, whereby it will be readily movable, while normally the tension is such as to cause the extremities of the member 2li to tightly engage the bottoms of the grooves 25, securely retaining the follower in the adjusted position.
I claim:
l. A cardlraising device for filing drawers, comprising in combination with the drawer, a frame slidable in the drawer belowV the cards, a rod journaled in the frame and provided with a crank arm, and a plate hinged to the frame and adapted to be Vacted on by the crank arm to'lift the cards.
2. A Vdevice of the class described, comprising in combination with a filing drawer, a frame slidably mounted inthe drawer below the cards,a frame-actuating rod journalcd in the frame and extending through the forward end of the drawenthe rod having a crank arm, a plate hingedly, connected with the rear part of the frame and extending forwardly therefrom above the crank arm of the rod, whereby, as the rod is given a partial rotation, the plate is actuated for card-raising purposes. i
3. rlhe combination with a` filing drawer, of a frame located in the lower part thereof and vlongitudinally movable therein, the drawer having means for guiding and retaining the f 1ame in place, a rod .iournaled in the frame and connected therewith to impart the longitudinal movement, the rod.
having a crank arm, and a plate liftably connected with the frame and adapted to be acted on by the crank arm of the rod the latter' is given Aa partial rotation.
:A filing drawer for cards, a frame nally disposed rod journaled in the said.
means and provided with a crank arm for actuating the said device, the rod extending forward beyond they drawer.
6. rl`he combination with a. filing drawer,
of `means longitudinally slidable in said drawer below the cards, a card-raising device liftably mounted on said means, and
a longitudinally disposed rod connected with the said means for actuating the same, the rod being journaled vin the said 'means and having a crank arm arranged to actuate the card-lifting device. y
'l'. The combination withA a filing drawer, of a card-lifting device slidably mounted -in the lower part of Vsaid drawer, andmeans extending beyond. the forward extremity of the drawer and connected ink operative relation with said ,device for moving the latter both longitudinally and liftably. n
Sg'The combination with a filing drawer, of means longitudinally 'slidable inV said drawer Vbelow the cards, a cardY raising deviee liftably mounted onsaidV means, and a longitudinally. disposedl rod connected with the said means for actuating the raising device.
l). The combination with a filing drawer, of means longitudinally slidable in r said drawer' below the cards, a cardy raising device liftably mounted on said .me-ans, and
a longitudinally .disposed rod connected with the said means for actuating the same, the rod having means thereon to` engage and lift said raising device. x
l0. rlhe combination with a filing drawer of means longitudinally. slidable in said drawer below the cards, a card raising device liftably mounted on said means, and
Ya member disposed longitudinally' of the drawer and extending from the front of the drawer to the raising devicel for lifting the latter. V v .f
