To illustrate the application of the invention, a well known type of controlling mechanism for phonographs used for business purposes is first described. Referring to the drawing, the character A designates a cylindrical sound record or blank carried by a rotatable mandrel or support 1. The support 1 is mounted upon a cabinet 2 and is arranged to sections 3 and 3 carried in bearings formed in standards 4 and 4 respectively upon the cabinet 2. On the section 3 of the shaft is splined a clutch collar 5, this clutch collar being free to slide along the section 3 of the shaft but forced to rotate with it. A driven pulley 6 which is made fast to the shaft section 3 carries a hub forming a clutch member 7 arranged to cooperate with the collar 5. A belt 8 connects the pulley 6 with a suitable source of power, not shown. The clutch collar 5 is moved into and outof engagement with the clutch member 7 by means of a member 9 which is preferably mounted in an upright position on the top of the cabinet 2 and has its upper end bent away from the observer viewing the apparatus from the position shown in Fig. 1 and is provided with projections 10 engaging a circumferential groove 11 in the collar 5.
At its lower end below the top of the cabinet 2, the member 9 is provided with an arm 12 which, viewing the apparatus as shown in Fig. 1, extends toward the observer, and to the forward end of this arm is pivoted one end of a link 13 which is pivoted at its other end to an armature of the electromagnetic device as hereinafter more fully described.

At one side of the coils and armatures is a vertically arranged plate 21 attached to the supporting plate 14 and composed of insulating material. A vertically arranged arm 22 mounted independently of and interposed between the U-shaped armatures and adapted to be actuated thereby is pivoted at its end adjacent to the plate 14 to the plate 21 on an axis parallel with the axes l9 and 20, being provided with a pivot pin 23 rojecting through to the opposite side of tiie plate 21. The arm 22 isprovided with suitable shock and noise-absorbing material 24, preferably felt, against whlch the armatures strike when actuated.
The plate 21 at one side is provided with spaced portions 25 and 26 to which are secured spaced contacts 27 and 28 having main portions 29 arranged in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the plate 21 and having their adjacent edges 30 bent at an angle to the plane of the mam portions, into the space 31 between the portions 25 and 26. Secured at one end to the projecting end ofthe pivot pin 23 is a movable switch contact 32 having its opposite end 33 engageable with the spaced contacts 27 and 28 and adapted to slide or brush thereover whereby the circuits through the coils are controlled. The lateral edges 34 of the engaging portion or end 33 of the switch contact 32 are bent outwardly from the main portion thereof in a direction the reverse of the adjacent edges 30 of the spaced contacts 27 and 28. This construction prevents sparking and corrosion as the switch contact 32 moves back and forth from one fixed contact to the other.
In order to provide a combined snap for the switch and means to prevent the actuation of either armature until the other reaches attracted position, which in the coninwardly from the'vertical as shown in Fig. 3, and to insure the actuation of the remaining armature to open the circuit of the energized coils when the attracted armature reaches its attracted position at the completion of its movement, a spring 35 is provided which is tensioned by t e movement of either armature to attracted position and, as here illus- -shown in Fig. 3.

Each member 36 and 37 has a curvededge 38 concentric with the pivot of its armature and adapted to be engaged by a curved end 39 of the member of the other armature. It is seen that when one armature is moving to attracted position its concentric edge supports and holds the other armature, and releases it only when the movement is completed, the members then engaging in the reverse order so that when the other armature is attracted the first armature is supported and held until the completion of the movement of the latter armature. A vertically arranged strip 40 of felt is arranged in the path of movement of armature 18 to absorb shock and noises when the armature moves to attracted position.
The electrical connections for the electromagnetic device are shown diagrammati cally in Fig. 1. As there illustrated the contact 27 is in circuit with the coils 15 through a conductor 41, the coils 15 being arranged in series and connected by the conductor 42. A conductor 43 terminating in a fixed contact 44 leads from the coils 15. The fixed contact 28 is in circuit with th coils 16 through a conductor 45, coils 16 being in series with each other through conductor 46. A conductor 47 leads from the coils l6 and terminates in a fixed contact 48 in spaced relation to the contact 44. The switch contact 32 is in circuit with one part 49 of the main line and a switch 50 in circuit with the other part 51 of the main line is interposed between the fixed contacts 44 and 48 and is adapted to alternately engage the same as desired. v
The operation of the form of my invention herein disclosed is as follows:
.When it is desired to start the mandrel, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, the switch 50 is moved into engagement with the contact 44, closing the circuit through the coils 15 energizing the same and causing the armature 17 to move from the position shown in Fig. l to the position shown in Fig. 3, thereby actuating the link to cause the engagement of the clutch members and start the mandrel. It will thus be seen that there is provided automatic means for opening the circuit through the coils at the completion of each movement of the device. When it is desired to stop the rotation of the mandrel the switch 50 1s moved into engagement with the contact 48, thereby closing the circuit through the coils 16. The armature 18 is thereupon attracted and moved to a position corresplonding to the p)osition of the armature 17 s own in Fig. 3.

When the armature 18 reaches the attracted position the armature 17 is released and the spring "draws the same inwardly, throwing out the clutch and moving the intermediate arm 22 to theposition shown in Fig. 1 and the switch contact 32 into engagement with the fixed contact 27, thereby automatically opening the circuit through the coils 16 and placing the coils 15 in position to be energized when the switch 50 is again actuated.
In providing U-shaped armatures pivoted substantially as shown and havinfg transverse portions extending over the ree ends of the coils, as the transverse portions approach the attracted position, the transverse resultant of the attractive force tending to move the armatures toward the coils decreases so that when the armature reaches substantially its vertical position the transverse resultant tending to move the armatureto vertical position is practically zero, the attractive force being then entirely downwardly. This arrangement reduces the momentum of the armature considerably so that when it reaches its attracted position it is easily stopped, reducing noise and Wear and tear.
By the above construction it will be seen that the clutch can be thrown in and out positively and that the armatures are actuated wit very little noise. The automatic switch controlling the circuits through the coils is stationary until the completion of the movement of each armature and is then thrown with a snap b the spring to open one circuit and, place t e other in condition to be closed whereby the circuits throu h the pairs of coils must be closed alternate y, the
switch being mounted independently ofthe armatures and controlled first by one armature and then the other.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments and features specifically shown and described herein but that such embodiments and features are subject to changes and modifications without any departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described the invention, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to grotect by Letters Patent of the United tates is as follows:
1. In a device of the character described, a movable member, electro-magnets having independently mounted armatures for controlling said member and a switch comprising a movable contact mounted independently of said armatures and adapted to be controlled thereby to control the circuits of said electromagnets, substantially as described.

5. In a device of the character described, a movable member, electro-magnets having independently mounted armatures for controlling said member, a switch for controlling the circuits of said electro-magnets and controlled by said armatures and means for forcibly releasing either armature when the other reaches attracted position to actuate said switch, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the character described, a movable member, a plurality of electromagnets for controlling said member and comprising coils andarmatures pivoted on parallel axes and movable transversely of ends of said coils, means for actuating one armature when the other is attracted and means for controlling the circuits of said coils, substantially as described. a

In a device of the character described, a movable member, electro-mag'nets having pivoted armatures for controlling said mem ber, means tending to actuate one armature when the other is attracted, holding means comprising a member on each armature having a curved edge concentric with the axis of its armature and a curved end coiiperable with the concentric edge of the other member and adapted to release one armature when the other reaches attracted position and means controlled by said armatures for controlling the circuits of said electro-magnets, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the character described, a movable member, electro-magnets having armatures for controlling said member, holding members on said armatures cooperating with each other to maintain either armature stationary until the other reaches attracted position, a switch for controlling the circuits through said electro-magnets and spring means for actuating either armature and switch when the other armature reaches its attracted position, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the character described, a movable member, electro-magnets for controlling said member and having pivoted armatures with portions movable transversely of ends of said electro-magnets, means for holding one armature until the other is actuated, spring means connected to said armatures and tensioned by the movement thereof, an arm pivoted between said armatures and a switch secured to said arm and actuated when either armature is moved to attracted position and the remaining armature is released and moved by said spring means, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the character described, a movable member, a plurality of electromagnets for controlling said member comprising coils arranged in parallel relation and U-shaped armatures, cooperating means on said armatures for maintaining one armature stationary until theother reaches its attracted position, a spring connecting said armatures, an arm pivoted at a point between said armatures and movable thereby, a switch controlled by'said arm, and means for absorbing shock and noise upon the movement of said armatures, substantially as described.
11. In a device of the character described, a. movable member, electro-magnets having armatures for controlling said member, means for holding one armature until the other is actuated, a switch for controlling the circuits through said electro-magnets, and means rendered effective to actuate either armature and the switch when the other armature reaches its attracted position, substantially as described.
12. In a device of the character described, a movable member, electro-magnets having armatures for controlling said member, means for holding one armature until the other is actuated, means for controlling the circuits through the electro-magnets, and means rendered effective to actuate either armature and the circuit-controlling means when the other armature is actuated, sub stantially as described.
13. In a device of the character described, a movable member, a circuit-controlling switch, and electro-magnets having armatures for controlling said member and switch and provided with parts comprising cooperating means for holding one armature untilthe other is actuated, the movement of either armature to its'a-ttracted position effecting the release of said holding means and the actuation of the other armature and the switch, substantially as described.

In a controlling device, a pair of electro-magnets having armatures mounted independently of. each other, a single switch actuated by each of said armatures, and energizing clrcuits for the electro-magnets so arranged that movement of the switch by one armature opens the energizing circuit of the electromagnet of the other armature and vice versa, substantially as described.

In a controlling device, a pair of electro-magnets havin armatures mounted independently of eac other, switch means actuated by each of said armatures, energizing circuits for the electro-magnets so arrangedthat movement of the switch means by one armature opens the energizing cir cuit of the electro-magnet of the other armature and vice versa, and means whereby each armature during a portion of its movement holds the'other armature against movement,
substantially as described.
16. In a controlling device, a pair of electro-magnets having armatures mounted independently of each other, switch means actuated by each of said armatures, energizing circuits for the electro-magnets so arranged that movement of the switch means by one armature opens the energizing circuit of the electro-magnet of the other armature and vice versa, means whereby each armature during a portion of its movement holds the other armature against movement, and spring means applied to said armatures to cause the same to move quickly when released, substantially as described.
