Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 7, 192i.
Application filed December 28, 1918. Serial No. 258,683.
T 0 all io-7mm it may concern Be it known that we, HENRY P, CLAUSEN and CI-rAnLns'L. GooDnUM, citizens of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon,
in the county of Westchester and State of y New York, andatNew York, inthe county of NewYork and State of New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone Systems, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in telephone systems and has particular reference to means for selecting an operators position.
An object of the invention is to enable an Operator to automatically select any one of a number of distant operators positions over a common wire by means of synchronized distributers.
The inventive idea involvedv is capable of receiving a variety of expressions one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing; but it is to be expressly understood that said drawing is employed merely for the purpose facilitating the description of the invention as a whole and not to deine the limits thereof, reference beino had to the appended claims for this purpose.
The drawing illustrates diagrammatically the circuit involving the present invention.
ln the drawing 1 and 2 designate the conductors of a telephone line leading to an operators position A, and 3 and 4L the limbs of a trunk circuit for interconnecting said position with any one of a plurality of operators positions located at a distant station, two of which are indicated at B and C.
The apparatus at the several positions employed for establishing a talking connection may be Of any construction well known in the yart and a detailed illustration and description thereof is therefore deemed unnecessary. For the purpose of determining the selection of the positions B and C there is provided at position A the keys B and C which, when operated, will automatically cause the selection of the positions at the distant station by energizing slOw-to-release relays 5 and 6. Energization of these relays is controlled by distributers 7 and 8, one of which is located at each station, and which are of any well known construction and opmon in the art. Joining these distributers is a common conductor 9 over which the connection for energizing or 6 is established. f
It is believed thatthe invention will now befully understood from a description of the operation. Should the operator at position A desire connection to the operator at position B, the key B is operated and as soon as the wipers of the distributors 7 and 8 engage the contacts to which conductors 10 andll are connected', a circuit will be closed for relay extending from grounded battery, winding of relay 5, conductor 11, wiper of distributer 8, conductor 9, wiper of either of the relays 5 distributer 7, conductor 10, contact l2 and spring 13 of key B to ground. Relay 5 is energized and closes a circuit including the telephone line leading to the operators apparatus at position B. Relay 5 is made slow-to-release so that the same will not become denergized during a complete revolution of the wipers of distributors 7 and 8 and the circuit to'station B will therefore loe maintained closed as long as key B remains ope-rated. A talking connection will now be established between the operators at positions A and B eXtending from the apparatus of position A, conductor l, contact 14 and its associated spring, limb 3, inner armature and front Contact of relay 5, apparatus at position B, front contact and outer armature ot' relay 5, limb el., spring l5 and its associated contact and conductor 2 to the apparatus at position A. At the termination o a conversation, release of key B will remove ground from the conductor l() and thus cause the denergization of relay 5. which, in retracting its armatures, breaks the talking circuit between positions A and B.
In the same manner as above set forth, the operator at position A may connect her apparatus to that at position C by operating key C to energize slow-to-release relay 6, which maintains the talking connection until key C is released.
lVhat is claimed is:
l. In a telephone system, a plurality of operators positions, means at one of said positions for determining the selection of any one of the other positions, means operated to select the position determined by the rst named means, synchronized means connecting the irst and second named means for controlling the operation of the latter,
and a common talking circuit completed by f the operation of the second named means for interconnecting the first named position with said other position.
2. In a telephone system, a plurality of operators positions, means at one of said p0- sitions for determining the selection of any one of the other positions, a relay operated to select the position determined by the rst named means, synchronized distributers connecting the irst named means and said relay for controlling the operation of the latter, and a common talking circuit completed through the contacts of said relay for interconnecting the first named position with said other position.
3. In a telephone system, a plurality of operators positions, a common talking circuit forV interconnecting said positions, means at one of said positionsfor determinlng the selection of any one of the other positions, a relay operated independently of said talking circuit to select the position determined by theiirst named means and to complete through its contacts the talking circuit between the first named and selected positions, and synchronized means connecting the first named means and said relay for controlling the operation of the latter.
In Witness whereof We hereunto subscribe our names this 12th day of December, A. D.
HENRY P. CLAUSEN. CHARLES L. GOODRUM.
