HERMAN EUDELLE MOORE, 0F TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA.
PULLING IMPLEMENT.
Application filed May 3, 1920.
I 0 all whom it may comicra Be it known that I, LlERMAN EUnnLLa ll'loomi, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tallahassee. in the county of Leon and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulling Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of the present invention is to provide a pulling implement particularly adapted to pull automobiles from mud holes and the like though it is use fill in other relations as, for example, as a wire stretcher. It is intended to provide a simple and inexpensive article adapted to be carried in the tool box of an automobile and providing means whereby one man may easily and quickly extricate an automobile from a mud hole or the like.
In the accompanying drawing in which like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the views:
Figure l is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view with parts of the structure broken away.
Referring to the drawing 5 designates a shank. This may be made of a piece of pipe or it may be a solid bar. If made of pipe it will be flattened at its lower end and if made of a solid bar it will be widened at its lower end to provide the necessary grip upon the ground. This widened portion is indicated at 6. A drum T is rotatively mounted upon the shank 5 and said drum carries an eye 8 adapted to receive a bar 9 by which the operator may impart rotation to the drum. The bar 9 may be of any desired length to give any necessary leverage. One end of the cable 10 is to be wound upon the drum, said cable passing 1 which is provided with a hook 12 to adapt it to engage the object to be drawn upon which may be the front axle of an automobile. indicated at 13. The cable passes from the pulley 11 over a pulley 14 that is provided with a hook 15 by which it may be engaged with the shank or bar 5. The cable is then returned to the block or pulley 11 to which its other end is attached.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 1921.
Serial No. 378,422.
A cross bar 16 is carried by the shank or bar 5 and serves the double purpose of preventing the drum from slipping downwardly upon the shank and of preventing the cable from passing off of the lower end of the drum. A handle 17 is provided at the upper end of the shank 5. A pawl 18 is pivoted to the shank 5 and is adapted to be swung to either side of a stop 19. The free end of the pawl engages ratchet opening 20 formed in the top of cylinder 7. This arrangement permits rotation of the cylinder in either direction and prevents reverse imivement of the cylinder. By driving the flattened lower end of the shank 5 firmly into the ground to give a secure anchor to the structure a person may by winding upon the cable through the medium of the drum 7 impart a very powerful drawing action to the object to be drawn, such as the axle 13. This is due to the fact that the leverages are compounded by means of the tackle shown and a very consii'lrrable movement of the cylinder results in imparting a very small movement to the axle 13 but this movement is correspondingly powerful.
It will be seen that the device is of such nature as to occupy very little space and to be of light weight. Consequently it may be easily carried in the tool box so that the driver of an automobile will always have at hand means for extricating his machine from diliicult positions.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, claim is- A device comprising a bar having a flattened lower end and a handle at its upper end, a drum rotatively mounted upon the bar, an eye upon the drum, a bar adapted to pass through said eye, a pawl and ratchet connection between the drum and the bar, pulleys and a cable passing over said pulleys and engaging the drum.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
HERMAN EU'DELLE MOORE.
