To @ZZ @Unomat may concern:
Be it known thatwe, SvnN Pj-ALQmsnpf Sedalia, Pettis county, Missouri, and ALLAN accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification.
This invention relatesfto improvements in Y freight car constructiom and more particularly to an improved arrangement of inside `doors adapted -to both protect the outside door from shifting' loads and-to serve as a grain door.V
Other and morespeciiic objects of the'invention are to provide an Aarrangement ofv thecharacter above indicated so designed y Y that the threshold andthe door posts of the ca r yare 'strengthened' and reinforced by means oi plates which are also arranged -to c operate and'unction with the inside door;
to y provide simple, automatically operated Y V4a pair of plates 2O and 21, the'formerbeing means for locking the inside door 'in'.itsdifferent positions; and tov provide simple means for opening the insidefdo'orby vusing Aa pinch'baror other similar vsuitable tool.
The invention furthermore n consists'` in improvements in the parts and 'devices and in the novel combination of the partsv and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming Aa part of thisV specification, Figure 1 is a sidefelevation of a portion of a freight car showing `our improvements in connection therewith.Y Fig. 2 is ahorizontal sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is 'a vertical sec-V tion taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Fig.v 1. Fig. 4* is an inside elevation of the car, the full lines illustrating the position A of the inside door in closed position, andthe dotted lines the position of thedoor. when open or in inoperative position. Fig. 51is Va Vdetailed vi'ew,-upon a largerv scale, illustrating more particularly'the .latch for lockingthe door in its different positions. Figs. 6
and 7 are detailed sectional views taken on the lines 6,-6. and 7 7 respectively of Fig...v
5. And Fig. 8 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 8 8 of Fig. 1.v
Referring to said drawing, lOvdenotes the` side wall of the car havingjthe usual' door f indicated in Figs. l, 2 and 3 at 14 to accom- 'modate al'ush outer door (not shown): 4The `improved inside door is indicatedat land,

The door 15 is slidablyxmounted; between mounted on the floor of the carfand extending over-*the threshold asl indicatedat 22 to *thereby reinforce the latter and minimize wear dueto trucks, etc. The* plate 201s provided with alongitudin'ally extending central groove23 `in which the lower edge vof the Vdoor -15 slides. The upperplate 21 is bolted ori otherwise ysuitably secured to the .inner wall of 1 the car and isf provided of the door. The plate 20, as shown, is provided Vwith upward extensions 25,?and26 at the opposite sides ofthe-door opening, said extensions being secured to the inner'faces oiV the door posts.12 to thereby strengthen Y the latter `and preventxexcessive wear there'- of. 'Iheportions'^`A 25V and 26.v arefshownroas extendingonly a 'relatively short distance. Y Y V'up the post112,butasfwill be-understood by f. those skilled in the art, these portions may be made of any desired length to suit varyingconditions. YThe'left-hand post 12, as
inner side thereof with a vertically extend- K`-` 1 'viewed in'Figs. 1 and 2, isA provided on the from the use of nails and strengthens it, but l@ l 11o Y Y has formed thereon a flange 29 to vthereby provide a vertical groove within which is received the advance doubled over edge 8O of the door 15 to form a grain seal when the door 15 is in closed position. Said plate 28 is also provided with a horizontal extension at the top as indicated at 27 to fit over the in which seats the hooked shaped vertical rear edge 12 of the door 16 to form a grain seal. 1
In order to retain the door 15 in either 'closed or open position, .we have provideda pivoted latch or .lock 31 mounted in a bracketl 32 counter-sunk into one of the posts 12, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1, 5, 6 and 7.V r1`he upper edge of the door 15 is provided withV twol notches 33 and 34, the
Vformer near theadvance edge of the door Y and the latter near the rear edge -so that, when the door is in closed position, theV gravity latch 31 will drop into the notch 34 :and hold the door closed and when the door is in open position, said latch will vfall into the notch 38 and hold itin said position. The bracketl 32 is provided with Va tapered socket 33 which will permit the latch 31 to swing vupwardly to thereby clear the door, as-is apparent from Fig. 7. To open the door'15when there is any pressure thereon from the interiorofthe car, the latch 34C is, of course, first lifted and then a pinch bar .or other suitable tool is inserted between the shoulder 34e on the door 15 and the a'djacentportion 25 of the reinforcing plate 22. As clearly appears from Figs. 2 and 8, the shoulder 34:', which maybe in the form of a short section of angle iron riveted or otherwise secured to the door, yis sol located as to provide suliicient clearance 35 to permit the insert-ion of the tool for prying the door open. The shoulder member 34, being applied to the counter-sunlror dished portions of the door 15,will clear the right-hand postl 12, as viewed in Fig. 2, Awhen the door 15 is open.
From -the preceding description, it will be seen that the arrangement which we have provided is well adapted for the purpose of protecting theoutside door from shifting "loads inwthe car and consequent damage thereto,` since the door V15, being dished inwardly and corrugated, is .exceedinglyV strong for its weight'and lis thereby also well designed for use as a grain door. Vhen used las a grain door, a grain seal is f quent cause of damage to the car.
Although we have herein shown and described what we now consider the preferred embodiment of our invention, the same is merely illustrative and we contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
In a car having a door opening-in a side wall thereof, defined by side posts, threshold and lintel, the combination with a door horizontally slidably mounted on the inner side of said wall, of fixed means, disposed out Vside of the door opening arranged to thereby lea've the latter unobstructed, coperable with the side and bottom edges of the door to form a grain seal therewith when the door is Vin closed position, said door ben .c f 4ing iormed of sheet metal and having a central, corrugated inwardly dished portion and flat marginal portions, the latter adapted lto vslidably bear against the inner face of said' side wall, said doorhaving an auxiliary relief door disposed within the area of the dished portion and inwardly of the plane defined by said flat marginal portions to thereby avoid interference when the door is moved to one side of the door opening hack of the side wall of the car.
