ADJUSTABLE OFFSET TOOL-HOLDER.
' i Application led April 5,
To all whom t may cof/wcm:
Be it known that LCECIL L. HOLLINGS- WORTH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain 1 new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Offset Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
One of the'objects of this invention is to provide an improved adjustable tool holder that can be stationarily held or allowed to revolve relative vto the type of machine with which thisV improved holder is adapted to coperate. f
Another object is to provide an oifset tool holder Vwith an improved adjustable arrangement relative to adjusting the tool to and from center. I
A. further object is in providing a tool holder with an improved tool clamping aw.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed 4out inthe appended claims, reference being hadto the Yaccompanying drawings eXemplitying the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a lvertical section taken through this improved adjustable offset tool holder.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section lslken approximately on the line II-II of iig. 1. y
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section-taken approximately on the line IVwIVof Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, this improved adjustable offset tool hold-er comprises a body portion 1 having a rearwardly extending portion 2, and formed in said rear portion 2 is apair of parallelly arranged sockets 3 and 4.
Formed in the front face of the body portion 1 is a slot or recess 5 extending the height or length of said body portion, said slot being closed by the front plate 6, and formed in said front plate isa longitudinal opening 7 which communicates with and is in alinement with the slot 5.
Secured to the end 8 ofthe body portion 1 is a removable cover plate 9, having an opening l0 formed therein, and mounted in said opening is an interiorly threaded bushing 11 having an annular shoulder 12 formed at one end, said shoulder being engaged against the inner face Qt the plate 9, and is clamped Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented4 May 31, 19211. 1919. serial No. 287,825.l
.Y plate and the end 8 of the body portion 1. j j
Adapted to bear on they outer face of said plate 9 and secured to thebushing 11 by the set screw 13 is a collar 14,said collar 14 and between said bushing 1l comprising a micrometer set `15. Movably mounted in the slot 5 of the body` portion 1 is a tool post 16 havinga guiding Y portion 17 which is rectangular in cross section, 'said post alsoy having athreaded por-y tion .,18which extends throughvthe bushing 11, the threads thereof being in' engagement with the threads of said bushing. Y
Longitudinally formed inthe threaded portion 'V18 of the post 16V is a centrally arranged opening 19, and mounted in said opening is a clampingscre'w 20`having` a squared end 2l, and athreaded end 22, said threaded end 22engaging the j interior threads 23 which are formed adjacent the inner end of the opening 19 of the post 16.
Formedin the tool post 16 intermediate of its ends isatransversely arranged clamping block opening 24 which contains aclamping blockl 25, said clamping Vblock having a groove 26 formed in. one of its faces, said grooved face adapted to be engaged against the shank Aportion27 lofa Lcutting tool 28 when the shank portion of said tool is mounted in the recess 29 which forms part of the opening 24 formed inthe tool post 1 6, asy shown moreclearly in Fig.` 2.
Arranged between the sockets 3 and 4 .of
to is an opening 30 through which is passed a draw boltV 31, said drawibolt having a clamping surface 32, which is -adapted to engage respective Shanks that are secured in the respective sockets 3 and 4.
Formed on said draw bolt is a threaded portion 33 on which is mounted a nut 34.
In the operation of this improved adjustable off-set holder, the same can be usedin connection with the shank 35 of a boring bar, or a revolving spindle of drill presses, milling machines or the like, or can be used in connection with a lathe, in which it is required that the tool holder be stationarily held.
When it is desired to use this improved tool holder in connection with a revolving spindle, the introducing portion 36 of the revolving shank 35 is engaged in the socket 3 of the body portion of the tool holder, and Vin which position it is approximately the body portion 1 and at right angles therecentrally arranged relative to the body portion 1 thereof thereby balancing the tool holder. The draw bolt 31 is then drawn by manipulation of the nut 34 until the clamping surface 32 thereof securely engages the portion 36 of the shank 35 thereby Xedly v securing the body portion 1 of the tool holder to said shank. n
When the shank35 is revolved, this improved tool holder will be carried therei with, and incidentally'the tool 28 Will enga'gingly revolve around the Work. Vhen this improved t'ool holder is to be used in connection with vthe lathe to which the same is to bestationarilyheld, after the revolving' shank 35 has been disconnected therefrom, the lathe tool post `shank 38 is engaged in the socket t which is lovvermost in the body portion, suchk position of engagement of the .shank 38 with the body portion 1 and the tool .post of the lathe holdin the lower end of the body portion above t e lathe bed so that the tool 28 or any other desired tool carried by the tool holder Will be in close proximity to the Working center of the lathe 1chck Which is arranged above the lathe In securinglthe tool holder to the lathe tool post shank 38 the draJW bolt 31 is drawn until the clamping surface 32 thereof securely engages the socket engaging portion of said'shank. j
From the aforesaid description it is to be noted that this improved tool holder is co-v tion, a tool adjustably carried by said body portion, means provided on 'said' body portion whereby a revoluble element can be secured to said body portion, and other means whereby said body portion can be secured to a stationarily held element and clamping means carried by said body portion coperable with either one of said elements.
2. A. tool holder comprising a body portion., an adjustable tool post carried by said body portion, a tool carried by said post, means provided on said. body portion Whereby a revoluble element can be Vcentrally secured to said body portion, and other means whereby said body portion can be secured to a stationarily held element in an elevated position.
3. A tool holder comprising a body por- `tion,'an adjustable tool post carried by said body portion, a tool clamping member earried by said post and extending therefrom, a tool carried by said post and lsecured thereto by said clamping member, said body portion having a pair of securing sockets formed therein for securing vsaid-body portion to either a revolving or a stationary element and securing means for said elements coperably located in said socket-s.
4. A tool holder comprising a body portion, an adjustable tool post carried by said body portion, said body portion having a pair of spaced apartparallelly arranged sockets formed therein, eaeh offsaid sockets being for the reception of a different holdingv element, and a dra-Wing and clamping member mounted in said body portion between said sockets for `coperation with said holding elements.V
