Be it known that I, ALBERT N. DAYWITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and tate of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Grading Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grading machines wherein earth is excavated from the road bed, or other suitable point, and carried away to be deposited at another point. It is among the objects of this invention to improve prior devices of this kind so as to allow economical, rapid, and effective cutting and removal of the earth, my invention resulting in a great saving in labor and cost of grading over that required by former machines of this kind.
In carrying the objects of my invention into effect, I provide a frame formed with a longitudinal beam and carrying a receptacle for earth, and means are provided for cutting and loading earth thereon, and for dumping same wherever desired. This invention is an improvement over the invention described and claimed in my eo-pending application, Serial No. 311,529, filed July 17, 1919, for road graders, which invention includes a stationary cutter or plow having one edge forwardly of the other, and a set of disk cutters cooperating therewith to cut earth, and mechanism is provided to raise the cutters above the level of the ground when the machine is on its way to the dump. A conveyer adjacent to the cutters receives the earth cut thereby and deposits the same in the receptacle.
The present invention contemplates improved means for raising and lowering the cutters, the said means forming a more rigid and durable structure, and being more easily operated. My invention further contemplates novel means for dumping earth with out lowering the bottom of the receptacle, as is common in the devices of the prior art.

The frame 1 of the machine is mounted upon a pair of wheels 2 fixed to the frame in any well known manner, the frame carrying a receptacle 3 having a sloping bottom A thereon. An opening in the bottom of the machine is closed by a bottom plate 5. At either end of the receptacle is a member 6 having a collar 7 loosely fitting over a shaft 8 j ournaled on the machine and having legs 9 and 10 rigidly fixed to the collar and terminating in pivots 11 and 12 which are secured-to the corners of the bottom plate or member of the receptacle. A pivot 13 is formed on one side of the receptacle and between said pivot and pivot 12 is inserted a toggle 14l15 having a pivot 16 forming the toggle joint. A second toggle 1718 is inserted between pivot 16 and shaft 8 being rigidly fixed to said shaft and carrying a toggle joint 19. An operating lever 20 is fixed to shaft 8 in proximity to the drivers seat 21.
The forward end 25 of the frame is formed with an extension 26 upon which is fixed member 27 having journaled therein a gear or pinion 28. A worm wheel 29 is rigidly connected to gear 28 by a shaft connection. A worm 29 meshes with the worm wheel 29 and has fixed therein a rod 30 extending to the drivers seat 21 and terminating in an operating wheel 30. The plow cutter 31, disk cutters 32 and conveyer belt 33 are mounted upon braces 34 and 35 which are fixed to the frame 25 or its extension 26, so that upon raising of such extension by turning of wheel 30 the cutters are elevated together with the forward end of the receptacle the point of support being the axles of wheels 2. Pivoted at 36 to the extension 26 are arms 37 the forward ends of which are connected to a structure having members 38 which carry the forward wheels 39 of the machine. A rack 40 is mounted on a shaft 40 carried by the arms 37 and meshes with gear 28 whereby on the rotation of said gear the toggle 26-37 may be broken, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to lower the cutters. By such an arrangement it will be noted the cutters, the conveyer, and
the receptacle are rigidly connected, and the elevation of the cutters can be very easily and simply accomplished.
When it is desired to dump the earth at any suitable point the operator grasps operating lever 20 and draws it over toward his seat. The motion is transmitted through shaft 8 to toggle 17-18 which is broken at the pivot 19 causing the breaking of toggle 14l5 and due to the fixed pivot 13 the bottom 5 is caused to swing over to one side opening the receptacle to allow the earth to slide out, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to V secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A grading machine comprising a frame, a cutting mechanism attached to said frame, a toggle member cooperating with the forward end'of said frame and connected with said cutting mechanism, and means for operating the to lowering the cutting mechanism.
2. A grading machine comprising a frame, a receptacle thereon, means on said receptacle for discharging the contents thereof, a cutting mechanism, and means formed with said frame for raising and low ering said cutting mechanism comprising a toggle member forming a prolongation of said frame. i
3. A grading machine comprising a frame, a receptacle thereon, means on said receptacle for discharging the contents thereof, a cutting mechanism, means formed with said framefor raising and lowering ggle member for raising and said rack, and means for operating'said gear. 7 I r 5.
