To all whom it may concern Be it-known that I, BENJIMAN F. Goon- ENoUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maurertown, in the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the 7 letters and figures of reference marked 7 riage for opening said gate from either direction of approach thereto.
' Another object is to provide a gate which is comparatively simple in construction, not expensive to manufacture, and which is thoroughly, efficient in operation.
Theinvention is clearly disclosed in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred formof embodiment of the invention. Like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. riefly described:

Referring now in detail to the drawings:
1,1designate base beams which are hinged, as shown at 2, to a member 3, disposed between adjacent ends thereof, and supporting an end post 4, which is shown supported intermediate the ends of said member 8.
6 designates a third base member, normally projecting at right angles to the base members 1, 1 and suitably secured at one end thereof to the member 3, intermediate the ends thereof. An angle plate 5 is secured to the end post 4 and to saidbase beam 6, and functions as a strengthening member.
As shown in Fig. 1, the base members are adapted to be sunk into the ground, in use, so that the tops thereof are flush with the top of the ground. If desired, cross braces 7, 7, connecting the base beams 1 with the base beam 6 may be used. 1
Disposed towardthe outer end of each base beam 1 are spaced vertical posts 8 and 9. Each of said vertical posts 9 carries toward the top thereof a bracket 10, carrying a pivot keeper 11, the keeper being movable in one direction on its .pivot, but being held against movement in the opposite direction by contacting with the angularly bent portion 12 of the bracket.
' 13 designates a gate, which is pivoted at one end thereof, as shown at 14 to the end post 4, so as to swing from a closed position thereof, shown in Fig. 1, to a fully open position, in which latter position, the gate will be disposed between the end post 4, and one of the vertical posts 9. dVhile said gate may be of any preferred construction, yet, from the standpoint of lightness of weight, while presenting the requisite strength and durability, I have, in this instance shown the same as constructed of a rod bent into rectangular shape and provided with a rod 14 connecting the top and bottom parts of the gate, intermediate the length thereof. Carried by the rod 14 is a bracket 15, to which is pivoted, as shown at 16, a latch rod 17 adapted, when the gate is moved from an open position to the closed position thereof, to bear against the lower end of one of two depending keepers 18, 18, rocking said keeper on its pivot until the end of said latch rod brushes by said keeper, whereupon the latter automatically falls by gravity into a perpendicular position, so as to rock said latching rod between said keepers. Each of said keepers is pivoted toward one end thereof, as shown at 19, to a bracket 20, carried by a vertical end post 21, rising from the free end of the base member 6 and properly secured thereto 'in any suitable manner, as by means of the plates 22, 22. Each one of said keepers 18, when in a perpendicular position, is held against movement in a direction away from the otherkeeper, but is free to move on its pivot in a direction toward the other keeper. The construction and operation of the keepers 18 and the keepers 11 are the same.
Carried by the latch rod 17, toward the pivotal end thereof, is a bracket 23, to
" whichis pivoted one end of a link 24, connecting saidlatch rod with oneend of a twoarmed rocker member 25, said rocker'member being formed in the shape of an angle a bar with the two arms thereof at right angles 'to each other, said rocker member similarly carried by the bracket 31, said cars 30 and 32 being disposed in the same vertical plane, and a pivot pin 33 passing through bothears and constituting the pivotal point of the bracket 31. The bracket 31 is formed as a plate, carrying the ears previously described, saidears being disposed at the top and bottom'edges of said plate and intermediate the-length thereof. Said plate 31 is also provided with lateral cars 34, 34, disposed as shown most clearly in Fig. 4 at diagonal corners of the plate, said cars 34, 34 projecting in a direction reverse to that of the ears 30 and 32.
Pivoted at one end thereof, as shown at 35, to each of said ears 34, 34 is an arm 36, to the free end of which is pivoted, as shown at 37, one end of'a wire 38, the free end of which is pivotally secured, as shown at 39, to one end of a finger 40 of a two-fingered lever 41, fulcrumed at 42 to the top of the correspondingjend post 8. The two fingers 40 of said lever 41 diverge from a point above the pivotal point of said lever, and to the pendent portion 43 of said lever, beneath the pivotal point 42, is secured a weight 44, in this instance a ball, or spherical body, pivoted, as shown at 45, to said pendent portion 43. To the end of the other j, finger 40 of the lever 41 ispivoted one end of a wire 46, the free end of, which is pivoted, as shown at 47 to the bent terminal 48 of a lever operating member 49, pivotally mounted in bearings 50, 50, carried by a board 51, supported preferably from the outerend of the corresponding base board, or beam, 1. Said lever operating members Will ride first upon one of the lever operating members 39, thereby rocking the same on its pivot, and pressing the same from the vertical position thereof to a position paral- "lel with the board 51, which movement of the member 49 will rock the terminal 48, carried by the member 49, so thatsaid terminal is likewise moved from a vertical to a horizontal position with respect to the board 51, thereby pulling downward upon the wire 46, and rocking the two-fingered member 41 on its pivot'42, and pulling upon the wire 38. This pull is imparted to the arm 36, which consequently rocks the plate 31 on its pivot 33, thereby rotating the car 29 in the arc of a circle. This movement of the ear imparts a pull to the wire 28, which consequently rocks the two-armed lever 25 on its fulcrum 26, thereby pulling upward upon the link 24 and tilting the latch rod 17 on its pivot 16, to move the free end of said latch rod' vertically upward from between the keepers 18, 18, to a position above the pivotal ends 19 of said keepers. As soon as the latch rod 17 has been elevated on'its pivot and the free end thereof comes into contact with the bent portion 51 of the guide member 52, carried by the gate 13, further move ment upward of said latching rod 17 is pre vented. Consequently rotation of the plate 31 independent of the gate 13 is revented. The plate 31 is now in effect rigi with the gate 13 and the'continual further pnllupon the wire 38 and consequently upon the arm 36 and upon the plate 31, will cause the gate to swing open on its pivot 14 tothe fully the vertical position thereof, to prevent"acci-' dental reverse movement .of the gate. 7 When the wheels of a wagon ride upon the second lever operating member 49, the latter is depressed in the same manner as thefirst mem ber and the connections between said second lever operating member 49 and the'plate 31 are actuated to move the gate in a direction the reverse of that first described, thus closing the gate. What I claim to be new is: V The combination with spaced apart posts of a gate panel hinged upon a vertical axis to one of said posts and proportioned to swing between said posts, a latch pivoted to the panel and appropriately pivotedzto' interlatch with the post opposite the 'hinging, a plate pivoted to the panel u on an axis approximately in alinement with the pivot of the panel, an arm formed integral with the plate extending in alinement with the panel, a connection from the arm to the latch whereby a rotary movement of the plate lifits the latch to the limit of its vertical movement and. further rotation of the plate through the medium of the arm and latch In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
