SYLVESTE R H. PRESTON, OF WORTH, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT m BOLT AND ROD curngns.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,956, dated April 15, 1873; application filed March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. H. PRESTON, of Worth, in the county of Mercer and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-(Jutters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a bolt-cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 an edge view, of my bolt-cutter. Fig. 3 is a view of the cutting-dies.
A represents the lever for the left hand, and B the cutting-lever for the right hand, the two levers being pivoted together at a. On the upper end of the lever A is a flange, b, projecting outward above the upper end of the lever B. On this side of the lever A, and against the flange b, is secured the stationary die 0, the cutting-edge of which is concave, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper end of the lever B, which forms the movable cutter D, is convex, and pivoted eccentrically by the bolt a. This bolt also fastens the upper end of a brace, D, on
the opposite side of the lever'A. The lower end of this brace is bent, as shown, and attached by a bolt, (1, to the lever B, the bent end forming a stop, E, against the lever A to protect the knuckles of the operator. The bolt d passesthrough slots in the elbow or bend of the brace D and in the lever B so as to adjust the stop as may be desired. In the upper end of the lever A, opposite the cuttingedges of the dies, is an opening, 6, for the bolt to be cut to pass through. H H are wooden handles attached to the lower ends of the levers A and B.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with a bolt-cutter, the adjustable elbow-brace D, forming the stop E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The lever A, provided with the flange b, aperture 0, and stationary cutter O, in combination with the lever B pivoted eccentrically to the lever A, and its upper end forming the movable cutter D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingI have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of February, 1873.
' SYLVESTER H. PRESTON.
