IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS F'CR PAPER-CUTTING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,920, dated April 15, 1873; application filed October 29, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EZRA TAYLOR HAZEL- TINE and OHEsTER PA K, both of Warren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Clamps for Paper-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the clamps attached to machines for cutting paper to hold it while being cut; and consists in triangular-shaped concave standards or posts, two at either side of the cutting-table, having segments of screwthreads cut on their inner or concave surfaces, and placed opposite each other so that each pair of posts form two parts of a circle, in which a combined screw and beveled gear works, carrying up and down the upper clamp,
the operation to be hereinafter fully explained.
In the drawing, Figure l is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2is a plan of the working parts. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation.
A represents the base or cutting-table, upon which the paper is placed. This table is provided with four upright triangular-shaped meta1 posts or standards, B, placed two at either side of the table, as shown, and having their inner surfaces made concave, and segments of screw-threads cut therein. The two at each side are so placed opposite each other that they form the two parts of a circle, and permit the working up and down of a combined screw and beveled gear, D, moving loosely in and attached between these posts to the upper or movable clamp G by means of a journalpost, a, fastened underneath clamp (J, its upper part formed into a socket or journal for the reception of the end of a horizontal shaft, 12, having beveled gear-wheels c c at each end that engage with the bevel gear teeth on top of the screws or worms D.
By turning the crank E, it operates the shaft and turns the screws at either end, carrying the table 0 either up or down, as desired, by a single and simple movement.
The four standards pass through the clamp 0, serving as guides to keep it steady and firm. By these simple devices great force, certainty, and steadiness ofaction are obtained.
Claim.
We claim- In a machine for cutting paper, the horizontal shaft 11 carrying the two bevel-wheels c c, and having its bearings in the journals 0. a rising from standards passing through andforming the axis of the combined bevel and worm wheels D D, and carrying the clamp G, as set forth, said combined gear and worm wheels working in the segmental racks of the vertical standards B B B B, as shown, and all combined and arranged as and for the purpose specified.
