tillation; and has for an object to provide a an improved kiln and to provide an improved process for the extraction of oil, gas, etc., from ores and the like. The invention provides an improved process, which consists in heating the material to a sufficient temperature to drive off the gas, oil or the like and condense the gaseous products driven oil.
In the drawings is shown an improved kiln which conveniently may be used to accomplish the improved process and which,
furthermore, is capable of other uses, the use of the kiln not being limited to the accomplishment of the process herein described.

in the drawings, the kiln shown provides a substantially closed retort 1 into which the material may conveniently be fed from a hopper 2 by means of a feeder wheel 3, the feeder wheel being driven at a speed to provide the necessary feed. Within the retort a conveyor chain a, passing over sprocket wheels 5 and 6 and driven thereby, provides means for pushing the material along the bottom 26 of the retort. The material in the hopper provides a sufiicient gas check to prevent the escape of the products of distillation. A discharge outlet 7 permits the discharge of the spent material.
The retort is provided with amanifold 9 to provide an outlet for the gases and vapo 1 and. the same may be passed therefrom to itable condenser to separate theco no products from the fixed gases in a nner well known in the art.

In order to prevent the clogging of the sprocket wheel 6 with such material as may work above the top of the conveyor chain, a clearer bar 12 is provided extending transversely of the chain and closely thereabove. This clearer bar is positioned at an angle to cause the material to be forced downwardly through the chain.
A door 13 provides convenient access to th interior of the retort. The bottom of the retort slopes downwardly from back to front to facilitate the travel of the material. In the construction shown, and pref erably, the'bottom of the retort is arched longitudinally from front to back as shown at 26, in order that a better contact between the conveyor chain and the bottom of the retort may be provided to facilitate the feeding of the material by the pusher feet of the chain.
' By having the bottom of the retort arr-lied longitudinally, it may be made of a separate piece, in addition to the fact that it holds the bottom lap or portion of the endless feed member or chain upwardiy' disposed,
' thereby keeping the upper lap or portion taut and reventingvertical or upward and downward movement or riding of the lower lap of the feeder or chain. In addition, it strengthens the bottom portion and obviates the necessity of forming the body of the retort in one piece so as to render the same extremely heavy, expensive and cumberseme, as where said bottom portion is arched transverselyor horizontally, or made concaved or dished out, as is the case with ordinary retorts.
Beneath the bottom of the retort is provided a fire box 14 and combustion chamber 15, the fire box being beneath the lower end of the retort,"providing thereby the greatest heat at the lower end, whereby the material is subjected to a gradually increasing heat as it passes through the retort beneath the bottom ortion 26. Anoutlet fine 16 leads the pro nets of combustion from the com bustion chamber.

claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent:'
1. A retort of the character described,
comprising aretort proper having an inclined bottom arched upwardly longitudinally thereof, a hopper, means to feed material from said hopper to the retort, sprocket Wheels at opposite ends of the retort'adjacent the bottom thereof, a conveyer chain mounted on said sprocket Wheels to be driven in'g pusher feet operative to pushthe material downwardly along said inclined bottom, and means to heat said retort 2.
