Qumran STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEO E. .EvsLm, or NEW Yong,- n. x.
'roo'rHBRUsE.
Toallwhomitmag concern:
Be it known that I, Lno E. EVSLIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the boron h of Manhattan, city, county, and State of ew York, have invented a certain 'new and useful Toothbrush, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to toothbrushes, and
has for its objects to produce such a device in which the brush proper may be separated from thehandle for the purpose hereinafter mentioned, and wherein the brush when in position on'the handle, will be securely held in position and prevented from rotatlng relatively to the handle.
A further object of the inventlon is to provide a structure, of the character herein described, which is extremal simple in com stru'ction, reliable and eflicient in its purpose, and inexpensive to manufacture.
1 These and other objects will more fully appear in the following specification and ac-' companying drawings, considered together or separately. A
I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings in which like parts in all of the figures are designated by similar reference characters,
and in which,-
projections of bristles 8. The'member 7 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tooth brush embodying my invention,v
Fig.2 is a longitudinal section of the same; V v
Fig. 3 is a sectiontaken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 5
4 is a brush member 6. The brush member be of any desired size, shape or material. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I- have illustrated the brush as composed of a block 7 of soft rubber, one side of which is provided with a plurality of laterally extending cylmdrlcal Specification of Letters Patent.
Fig. QrIS B, similar view. of a modification;
is provided with a socket 9 extending part ally through it in the longitudinal direction, and a perforation 10 extending from the socket 9 to the other end of the block.
A flexible rod 11 having a head 12 is in- Patented May 17, 1921. l Application'filcd J anuary 23, 1919. Serial No. 272,668. I i I .serted in the perforation 1Q ofthe block 7 i and passed through the socket 9 and through the tubular portion of the handle 1. The end of the rod opposite the head is screwthreaded' for; engagement with the nut 2. The major portion of the rod is of rectangular cross-sectlon and'of ribbon-like form. The rod ispreferably of more or less flexible material such as steel, and preferably is given a permanent bend at a short distance from the head end. The bend in-therod and its flexible nature will facilitate the passage of the rod around the bend 5. The head 12, when the rod isin position, will rest in a socket 12 in the end of the brush member 6.
The brush member may be constructed of paper pulp, the same being properly treated so as to be water proof.
Instead of forming the socket 9 in the brush member 6, the perforation 10 may extend entirely through the member and the elasticity of the rubber of the member will permit the member to move over the extension 4 and the softness of the rubber of the member will permit the head 12 of the rod to become embedded in the member and prevent injury tothe teeth or soft parts of the month by the head 12, in which case the socket l2 'may be omitted.
The frictional engagement of the member 6. with the extension- 4, togethenwith the" rectangular cross-section of the rod, will prevent rotation of the member relatively to the handle and 'brush'ng elements will always be presented at the proper angle.
The extension 4 ma be of circular crosssection, as shown in ig. 3, and the frictional engagement of the member with the extension may be relied upon to prevent rotation of the member.
In the modification illustrated in 4,
i I show that portion at least, of the extension which enters the member as of non-circular cross-section to prevent turning of the member relatively to the handle. In Fig. 4, I
have also illustrated the member 6 as of the usual form and material, such as bone, ivory, hard rubber, celluloid, etc., and with the usual bristles carried thereby.
-I desire to have it understood-that the rod may be made of a shape other than rectangular, if desired.
The head 12 of the rod may be constructed of a material, such as celluloid, which will not cause injury to the mouth, or it may be covered by a cap 12 of soft rubber or other suitable material, as shown in Fig. 5. When it is desired to remove the member,
the nut is rotated so that the rod is released therefrom, thereby permitting the rodto be after a single use, in'which case absolutely.
withdrawn from the handle, and allowing of the removal of the brush memben Thebrush member 6 is small and. inexpensive, and may, if desired, be discarded sanitary conditionswill obtain, and there will be absolutely no danger of transmitting germs to the mouth, or two members 6 may be employed, one of which may be sterilizedwhile the other is in use.
In my construction it is possible to so shown and described, and, therefore, I claim broadly the right to employ all equivalent of the appended claims, and by means of which obJects of my inventionare attained,-
and the new results accom lished, as hereinv set forth, as it is obvious t at the particular embodiments herein shown and described manipulate the bristles as to render it easy to clean the teeth on the inside. .This is to the particular form of apparatus herein.
are only-illustrative of'some that can be employed to attain these objects and accomplish these results. i Having now described my invention, what I claim as: new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A tooth brush comprising a tubular handle, a tubular member removably carried instrumentalities coming within the scope thereby andextending forwardly therefrom,
said member being bentslightly intermediate its ends to form an obtuse angle, a brush head carried by said. member, and means for locking said brush head against movement relatively to the handle, said means comprising a flattened member removably carried by the handle and engaging the brush head, said flattened member passing through the tubular handle and the tubular member and that part passing through the tubular member being carried so as to bring a flattened face thereof against the. inner wall of the tubular extension.
This specification signed 3 and witnessed this 17th day of January, 1919.
