Description
s. H. L0 VET T. CAR DOOR- APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 4, I919.
Patented May 17,1921.
UNITED STATES- PATENT joFFicE.
STEPHEN H; LOVE'IT, or MILES orrY, YMON'IANA.
one-noon;
To all "wk-omit may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN H. Lovn'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miles City, in the county of Custer and State 'of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has relation to closures for box cars in which a commodity is hauled in bulk and specifically considered, the inven- 1 tion relates to freight car doors of the type which are mounted to open and close by a tilting or rocking movement.
The invention relates more particularly to the means for sustaining the wear and for preventing displacement of the door and holding the same in proper position in either open or closed position or at any intermediate position.
The drawings illustrate a referred embodiment of the invention. owever, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Figure 1 illustrates a portion of a freight car provided with a tilting doorembodying the invention, the full lines' showing the door closed and the dotted lines illustrating the position of the door when open.v
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section 22 of Fig. 1. r
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the side of a freight car in which is provided the usual opening adapted to be closed in the present instance by means of a 'door 2 which is mounted to open and close by a tilting or rocking movement.
low the door opening so as to engage thelower portion of the door. The brackets are adjustable by means of hand nuts '5 By referring to the accompanying drawcorner-of the door to sustain the wear.
on the line fshown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 3,.the

which are, mounted upon threaded stems projecting outwardly from the side of'the.
car. The brackets'are offset and-the ends adapted to engage the door and possess a certain degree of resiliency so as to press the door close against the side of the car and thereby prevent any play and obviate resulting rattle. The door when closedmay be secured by any suitable means and as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a strap 6 is loosely connected to the upper beam of the. car and is adapted toengage a stem 7 projecting from thedoor, the projecting end of the stem ree ceiving a hand nut 8 by means of which the door may be drawn close against the side of the car.
iVhen the door is in open position, it'is retained in' place by means of a vertical strip 9 and a horizontal strip 10. A strip 11 is spaced from aside of the car a distance to admit of the door 2 passing betweg n the strip and the outer side of the car body, 7
and is adapted to sustain the wear; A companion bar-is secured to; the strip 10 and acts,
jointly with the bar applied to the rounding metal bar 12 secured to the rounding corner of the door is curved and provided upon its outer side with teeth 13. The extremities of the toothed curved bar 12 are provided with long teeth 14 which constitutes stops to limit the movement of the'door. As shown and the straight bar 15 formed with intermeshing teeth, the door is'caused to move uniformly when opening and. closing, so that applied to the Se-1 5 1o r in Figs. 1, 2Iand 3, the bar 12 is in the plane j .i
the bar 12. By having the curved bar 12- the terminal teeth 14 and 16 will coact in Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 3- In combination wlth a car body having an opening, a door mounted upon said body and provided with a rounded lower corner curved rack barcarriedbyvthe door, a .de-
tachable strap lock engaging theupper'end of the door for holding the same in a closed position, spaced spring members engaging the door when in the closed position for holding the same firmly upon the car, and a spring retaining member carried by said car and overhanging the lower curved corner of the door for firmly retaining the rack carried by the doorin engagement with the rack carried by the car.
In testimony. whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo witnesses.
