STEM WINDING AND SETTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. FREUND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Newtonville, county of' Middlesex, Massachusetts, have made a certain new and useful Invention Relating to Stem Winding and Setting Devices, of which the follow ing is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms part of the same.
This invention relates especially to stem winding and setting devices for watches in which the pendant lever has av rigidly con nected pivot stud which is preferably mounted in a pivot bearingin the dial plate in which the winding stem is supported. A retaining spring which may advantageously engage the pendant lever between its pivot pin and the actuating lug thereon normally presses this pivot pin into its bearing hole and simultaneously holds the actuatingstud in engagement with the actuating groove in the winding stem. At the same time, however, the pivot stud may be engaged by a pin or other device inserted in the pivot bearing hole in the other side of the watch so-that pressure on the pivot stud may force it and the connected pendant lever away from the dial plate so as to carry the actuating lug out of the groove in the winding stem and allow the removal thereof. In this way an amply long strong bearing is secured on this pendant lever so that it is unlikely to be'loosened or broken under severe service and it is yieldably and reliably held in operating position in which it cooperates with the clutch lever while pressure on the countersunk pivot stud may instantly release the winding stem when desired.
In the accompanying drawing showing in a somewhat diagrammatic way an illustrative embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a front view showing the stem winding and setting mechanism.

The dial plate 1 is preferably made of way a firm and secure bearing is provided for the winding stem which promotes the accurate and reliable operation of the other parts. The pendant lever 12 is preferably rigidly and permanently connected to its pivot stud 13 which may have the reduced end 27 riveted or otherwise secured in a hole in the pendantlever. as indicated in Fig. 2 and this pivot stud is of such length as to extend substantially through the dial plate and cooperating bridge member 26 which is preferably relatively thin adjacent the winding stem, the end of this pivot stud being preferably though not necessarily slightly countersunk to preventits accidental displacement. The pendant lever may, if desired, be mounted within a suitable recess 2 in the dial plate which also accommodates the retaining spring 21 securely held at one end by a mounting formed of the spring screw 20 and washer 29. In this way the free end of this spring may engage the pendant lever between its pivot stud and the actuating lug 15 which may be integral therewith and which is adapted to engage the actuating groove 24 in the winding stem by which the pendant lever is oscillated when the winding stem is strongly pulled outward in the usual way. 1 v
The cooperating clutch lever 18 may have its end located within the annular groove or recess 8 in the clutch sleeve 6 which is mounted on the squared or polygonal portion 10 of the winding stem and formed with a correspondingly shaped hole so that it rotates with the stem. This clutch lever may be conveniently mounted about the pin or screw 19 in the dial plate and is normally held in the raised position indicated in Fig. 1 by a suitable spring, such as the clutch spring 22 which may be held at its other end by an anchor screw 23. This clutch lever may have an angular or upwardly extending portion lZ-cooperating with the adjacent part 14: of the pendant lever so as to be operated thereby, the position or shape of these engaging portions being such as to insure this operation as by the use of a suitable wedging operating face 16 on the clutch lever. 5 1
In the raised position indicated the clutch lever holds the clutch sleeve 6 up in engagement with the clutch member 5 on the winding pinion 4 so that when the winding stem is rotated this winding pinion is rotated in V wheels of the watch. When, however, the winding stem is drawn outward, the pendant lever 12 is correspondingly, oscillated about its pivot stud l3 and this forces the clutch lever 18 downward against the action of its spring 22 so as to disengage the clutch members connecting this sleeve with the Winding pinion and also simultaneously throw the crown setting gear 7 into mesh with the setting pinion 9. Under these con ditions the rotation of the winding stem rotates the setting pinion and connected setting wheels so as to set the hands of the watch after which the winding stem may be forced inward to restore the parts to their Fi 1- position.
fiy giving the pendant lever a long hearing pivot stud seated in the dial plate in which the winding stem is mounted, its rigidity and strength are promoted to an important degree and its effective operating alinement with the other parts can be in sured in spite of the severe strains to which the winding stem often subjects it. Furthermore, when the watch is to be taken apart a pin or tool, such as 28, may be forced against the somewhat countersunk end of the pivot stud as shown in Fig. 3 so as to push this stud and the connected pendant lever out away from the dial plate and the winding stem 3, thus disengaging the actuating lug from the stem recess and allowing the winding stem to be instantly withdrawn. When released the pendant lever is forced back into place by its retaining spring and this yielding mounting also allows the winding stem to be forced into place, the different cylindrical and polygonal parts of the stem readily working past the actuating lug on the pendant lever so that it is usually unnecessary to otherwise release the pendant leveror lug in the manner indicated in Fig. 3.

The stem winding and setting devices for watches comprising a dial plate and cooperating relatively thin bridge member adjacent the stem bearing, a winding stem mounted entirely within said dial plate, a winding pinion and clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said winding stem, a clutch lever cooperating with an annular recess in said clutch sleeve, a pendant lever mounted in a recess in said dial plate and having an integral actuating lug cooperating with the actuating groove in said winding stem and having a rigidly connected pivot stud mounted in a bearing hole in said dial plate and cooperating bridge member so that its free end is slightly countersunk and having an operating end cooperating with said clutch lever and a retaining spring mounted in said recess and engaging said pendant lever between its pivot stud and actuating lug to releasably hold it in cooperation with said winding stem.
2. The stem winding and setting devices for watches comprising a dial plate and cooperating'relatively thin bridge member arjacent the stem bearing, a winding stem mounted within said dial plate, a clutch sleeve loosely mounted on said winding stem, a clutch lever cooperating with said clutch sleeve, a pendant lever mounted in a recess insaid dial plate and having an actuating lug cooperating with the actuating groove in said winding stem and having a rigidly connected pivot stud mounted in a bearing hole in said dial plate and having an operating end cooperating with said clutch lever and a retaining spring mounted in said recess and cooperating with said pendant lever to releasably hold it in cooperation with said windingstem.
3. The stem winding and setting devices for watches, comprising a plate, a winding stem, a clutch sleeve mounted on said winding stem, a clutch member cooperating with said clutch sleeve, a pendant lever operating said clutch member and pivotally mounted onsaid plate and having an actuating lug cooperating with said winding stem and a retaining spring engaging said pendant lever between its pivot point and actuating lug to releasably hold it in cooperation with said winding stem.
4. The stem winding and setting devices for watches comprising a plate, a winding stem, a pendant lever mounted on said plate and having an actuating lug cooperating with said winding stem and having a rigidly connected pivot mounted in said plate so that its free end is normally countersunk below the adjacent member and a retaining spring engaging said pendant lever between its pivot and actuating lug to releasably hold it ,incooperation with said winding stem.
