1 BED CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters IEatent, 1 Pate t d 117 .1 2
Application filed December 15, 1919. Serial No. 344,795.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWA D J. Smenunn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Bed Constructions, of which the followlng 1s a descr1pt1on..
My invention belongs to that general class. of devices known as beds, and relates part1cularly to a bed construction suitable for toybeds or the like. The construction, however, may be employed wherever found appllcable.- The invention has among its ob ects, the production of a bed construction of the kind described, thatis simple, eflic1ent,'convenient, ornamental, strong, durable, and economical to manufacture and assemble. The
invention has particularly as an object the production of an inexpensive simple construction that is suitable for toy or dollbeds. Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and'combi nation of parts herein shown and described,
and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like or correspondlng parts,
Figure 1 is a plan View of a bed embodying my construction,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the foot end, Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 4.4 of ,Fig '3,
Fig. 5 is a sectional v1ew taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 4:,
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 66 of Fig, 4, V
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 7-7 of Fig. 4:, and
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 8-8 of Flg. 4. v
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the head and foot end frames of the bed, which are extended to form cross bars with depending legs. The end frames carry,
and are maintainedand held in relative positions by a mattress frame consisting of the side bars 33 and connecting bars 4 4: arranged adjacent the ends. The mattress frame carries a wire mattress consistlng of the cross wires 5, which are preferably twisted together at points 6 as indicated.
In vlew of the fact that the two endframes are similar .a description of ,one-willosufiice for both. Referring particularly to Fig. '3 and succeedlng figures, the depending legs of the end frame are connected and braced by a cross bar 7', as'wellas by the vertical bars.8, wh1ch add. to the attractiveness of the bed, and prevent the bedding from being displaced at either end, The several parts 2, 7and 8.are secured together by members 9, which are, preferably castings, cast in place the several bars and rods, being. arranged; n the desiredv positions and the members then cast at their juncturesa In order to prevent relative displacement or i sliding of the castings on the bars, or pulling out at the end of the bars, the bars may be notched or roughened, as at 10, or formed in an equlvalent manner, so that when the members 9'are cast in place the metal will flow into the grooves, or the like, securely locking the parts together, and preventing their separation after the bed has been in use, and the joints possibly slightly loosened. Each of the depending legs may be provided with a foot 11, also-in the shapeof a casting and cast thereupon, similar tothe members 9. Each of the depending legs of the end frames, or, equivalent parts, are provided with a bracket 12, which is also preferably cast in place, and is provided with an opening 16 at the free end of the same. The mattress frame parts are secured together by castings 13, which are spaced from the "extreme ends of the side bars 3-3, so that the bars project at the ends, asat 14, the extreme ends of the bars being turned down as indicated at 15. The openings or holes 16 in the brackets 12 are of a size to receive and engage the turned down portions 15.
It will be noted'that the bed, when constructed as shown and described, consists of only three parts, the head frame, the foot frameand the mattress frame, all of which'are detachably secured together. The frame parts or bars may be, in the case of a toy-bed, constructed of wire of suitable I gage, and the members 9, 11, 12 and 13 may be lead, or some soft metal, so that a very in expensive toy-bed may be constructed that will be extremely ornamental and attractive, and be a close copy of a full sized'bed. The frames may be gilded, painted,or otherwise finished to give a brass bed or other pleasing effect. The wires may be bent as vdesired and additional braces added so as to produce additional and varied designs and types ofbeds, without materially changing the details of construction. The bed may be easily taken apart for storage or shipping, it being possible for a child to easily set up and assemble the parts, or disassemble the same, as desired. The same makes a very pleasing and interesting-toy for a child.
Having thus described my invention, it is,
obvious that various immaterial modifications-maybe made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention;
hence I do not wish to be understood as limcomprising, castings mounted upon the frames and fashioned to receivethe brace wires, said brace wires having V-shaped together,'a bracket supported by each of.
said head and foot frames, said bracket having an aperture therein and a portion of the material constituting the same projecting into the aperture and adapted to-seat within a circular cutout portion in its support to maintain the bracket in position, the side Wires of said mattress frame having'their ends bent downwardly and arranged to enter openings in the brackets.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. EDWARD J. STALDER.
