H. H. MARRmTT. SIGN. APPLICATION FILED 1:58.16, 1920.

Speciication of Letters Patent.
Fatented May l0, 192m Application led February "i6, 1920. Serial No. 359,056.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HARRY l-l. Manniorfr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county oi Jackson and State ot Missouri, have invented a new and useful Sign, oit which the following is a speciiication.
By way'of explanation it may be stated that a sign, the letters or characters of which are fashioned from metal toil, and particularly from gold foil, is a peculiarly attractive and effective sign in the daylight. Such a sign, as ordinarily constructed, however', loses practically all ot its eiiiciency and utility after nightfall, because metal foil is opaque, or, at least, so nearly opaque, that the sign cannot be illuminated from the rear after dark.
The foregoing being understood, it may be stated that it is the object of thisinvention to provide a sign which, in the daytime, will possess all of the advantages of a Yfoil sign, and, as well, be capable oi'illumination after nightfall.
it is within the province ol the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility or' devices of that sort to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ot parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope or' what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment or the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure l shows in front elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, parts being broken away; Fig. 2 is a section taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the netting and the foil carried thereby. n
ln carrying out the invention there is provided a panel which is a composite structure. The panel includes a front plate l, which may be made of glass, if desired, paint 2 or the like being applied to the plate l, so as to render the plate opaque or nearly so.
Portions oi the paint 2 are removed or omitted, so as to define openings 3 which may orm'the letters of a sign, an ornamental design, or any other character which properly Jorms part of a sign.
'llo the rear .of plate 1, a netting d is disposed, the netting e preferably being in contact with the plate 1. The netting 4; may be held upon the plate l by an edge binder 5 or in any other suitable way. Pieces oi? metal foil, preferably gold foil indicated at 6, are secured to the netting 4, the pieces of foil being ordinarily disposed against the front plate l. The pieces of foil G are disposed closly enough together so that the space within the opening 3 will present the characteristic color of the foil 6 in the daytime, the pieces of foil being spaced siiiiiciently to permit the passage of artificial light therebetween, when the panel is illuminated from the rear.
Ordinarily, the panel is mounted in any suitable way, in the front of a box 7, and is illuminated from the rear by means of one or more lamps 8. Preferably, the netting 4 is gilded er otherwise colored to correspond with the color of the pieces 6 of foil. The entire netting 4 need not be provided with the pieces 6 or" foil, neither need the entire netting be gilded or colored otherwise to correspond with the color oi' the foil, it being obvious that only so much of the netting as is disclosed through the openings 8, need be treated as above alluded to.
The sign forming the subject matter of this application is so constituted that, in the daytime, it will present the attractive features ot a gold foil letter, and, it is to be observed, the sign may be illuminated adequately after nightfall.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is l. In a device of the class described, a panel comprising a iront plate, a netting behind the front plate, and pieces of metal foil secured to the netting, the front plate having a sign-forming opening through which the toil is visible, the pieces of foil being disposed closely enough together so that the space within the opening will present the characteristic color or' the oil in daylight, ythepieces ot foil being separated sufficiently to permit the passage of artificial In testimony that I claim the foregoing light therebetween from the rear; and` means as my own, I have hereto aixed my Signa- 10 for illAuminating the panel from the rear. ture in the presence or" two Witnesses.
V2. device of the class described, conv struoted as Set forth in claim l and further HARRY H' MARRIOTT' characterized .by the fact that the netting iS Witnesses: t Y colored to correspond with the color of the JESSE L. PLUMMER, foil. Y JOHN T. ROBERTS.
