Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it my concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWARD BOGHAMBEAU, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Joseph, in the County Y of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Car-Brake-Controlling Means, of which the following is aI full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to railway car brakes and has particular reference to certain improvements in that class of brakes covered by ALetters Patent of the United States issued to me on the 11th day of February, 1913, No. 1,052,967.
Among the objects of this present invention is to improve the means for controlling the operation of the4 drum or winding Fig. 3 is a spindle for the brake chain.

The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter .be more fully described and Vclaimed and illustrated inv the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is. a side elevation of my improvement with the front wall or face plate, the hand wheel and the chain omitted; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2--2 of Fig. l;

hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed. l Refer-ring more particularly/to the drawings, I'show at 10 any suitable form or construction of casing adapted to be secured in any desired position to a car body or frame as, for instance, through perforated flanges 11. Said casing includes a front panel 12 secured to the main portion of the casing by nuts 13 orequivalent fastening devices.
Journaled-in the casing transversely thereof isa power shaft 14 having a pinion 15 mounted thereon. As a suitable means to operate the power shaft I show a hand wheel 16 secured to the endof the shaft 14 outside of the casing. A brake drum or spindle 17 is journaledin the casing with its axis parallel to the shaft 14, and a large gear wheel 18 meshin with the pinion 15 is secured dto said spin e.
Adjacent the gear wheel 18 is a ratchet wheel 19 with which coperates a pawl 20` pivoted intermediate its ends at 21. on an axis parallel to the aforesaid aXes. The tail 22 of the pawl extends upwardly at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the pawl and is of sufficient weight to substantially counterbalance the weight of the pawl.
Any suitable means may be provided to control the action of the pawl either to throw it into or out of locking engagement with the ratchet wheel 19. The means I prefer to use for this purpose includes a weight, 23 slidable freely along a guide rod ory bar 24 eX- tending along the casing parallel to the normal longitudinal axis of the pawl. The weight 23, to provide for the free slidable movement both longitudinally and vertically of said bar 24, is formed with a slot 25 of considerably reater width than the width of the bar. he lower end or point of the weight is adapted tovbear upon the upper portion of the pawl for the purpose of causing the pawl to engage the ratchet wheel. By sliding the weight, however, along the bar 24so as to cause it to ride upon the tail 22 of the pawl, the pawl will be thrown and held out of locln'ng engagement with the ratchet wheel. In order to control the movel ment or action of the weight 23, I connect thereto a link 26, the same extending substantially parallel to the bar 24 and beyond one side of the casing where it terminates in a finger piece 27 ofv any suitable construction. The connection between the link and the weight is preferably a pivot 28. The finger piece is provided with a' transverse hole adapted to aline with a similar hole formed in a lug 29 formed integral with or secured to the adjacent side wall of the casing whereby, by the' use of a padlock P or the like the welght 23 may be locked in thepo- `sition required for loclng the pawl positively in enga ement with the ratchet wheel,
as shown in ig. 1.
From the foregoing description of the principal parts of this mechanism, it will be in the manner set forth, the Weight 23 will be shoved inwardly so as to depress the pawl 20 A and lock it in engagement with the ratchet wheel. Then, if desired, the pawl controller may be locked in position so as to prevent any unauthorized party from tampering with the brake after it has been Set and locked. By providing the weight 23 with a wide slot 25, I insure that the full weight of the fveight will bear at all times upon the paw Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the character set forth,
the combination of a brake casing, a power l' spindle journaled transversely therein, a'-
brake chain extending through the wall of the casing and connected to said spindle, a
ratchet wheel secured to the spindle, a pawl coperating with the ratchet wheel, a fixed bar extending within the casing parallel to the pawl, a weight slidable along said bar and bearing at all times upon said pawl, and
a link connected to the weight and extending through and beyond the casing wall whereby the position of the weight may be controlled.

power spindle journaled in the casing, a
brake chain connected to said spindle, means to rotate the spindle, a ratchet wheel secured to the spindle, a pawl connected with ing whereby the position of the weight may be determined, and means for locking the finger piece in definite position to the casing and thereby preventing the release of the pawl when the brake is set.
