Be it known that I, EMIL E. Novo'rNY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residin at Riverside, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and Vuseful Improvements in Composite Sheets, or which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a composition sheet for makin matrices or molds, and has particular app ication to a sheet adapted :lor making a matrix or mold to be use in the manufacture of printing plates.
As is. `well lmown to those inthe printing art, printing plates are comparatively expensive because they require special appliences and the exercise of considerable slrill in their manufacture, and therefore, when a printer desires to have a body oirJ type or cut or relief plate reproduced as a printing plate it is necessar tor himto have this vvorlr done in an estab ishment usually malrinea a specialty. ot this particular line of Work.
In the present instance it is my purpose to provide a sheet which is particularly vvell adapted Ilor making printing plates and Twhich can be sold to the printer in quantity at a relatively low cost, so that by a simple method, such, for instance, as is described my cO-pending application Serial No. 98,910, tiled May 20, i916, he can make his ovvn mold in his ovvn establishment, and 'can then make his own printing plates :trom such mold.'
With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in vvievv, the invention consists in the proved com osite sheet and in the method of making t e same set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the practice ot the invention I select a thin sheet or layer of metal preferably V possessing a certain degree of pliability and capable oi being rendered plastic, but having comparativel little ductilitythe preierable metal employed being lead, although other metals, such as copper, may be used. @ne facey ot this lead sheet, that is, the tace which will constitute the back ot the mold sheet is preferably electro-plated 'withr copper. To this .back face of the lead sheet I apply, in any suitable manner, a selected cement-like substance, when the latter is in a plastic condition, this substance being such that lWhen in itshardened or non-plastic state it will not lose its form. There' are various kinds of cements and embossing compositions which I might employ to form this backing sheet or layer, which is shown at B, but I have found that a plastic phenolic condensation product which as is Well known is a synthetic resin or resinous compositioncapablec of being hardened to the infusible or non-plastic state and which will.

There are several kinds or varieties of these phenolic condensation products Well known in the art to which they relate, one oi which is known as balrelite and is Well adapted lor my purpose. This cement is applied in its plastic state to the back of the lead sheet A' to form a backing coating, layer` or sheet oi a suitable thiclxness, for `instance, about twenty one-thousandths of an inch. While this cement is still in a plastic or pliable state or condition I preferably place an outer baching sheet or layer thereon, shown at C and which backing sheet is prelerablA in the nature ot flexible2 brous materia such as paper-board. Tins backing sheet C is employed tor the sake of economy in the use oi" cement and also to facilitate the molding operation, for if desired, instead oi' employing this paper-board backing sheet C, `which is of substantially the same thickness as the layer or cement sheet B, I may increase the thickness of. the cement layer'or sheet B, and dispense with the paper-boardshect- C, so that my composite plate in such case would be composed of a metallic lacing sheet and a cementitious backing sheet.
