UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JNO. W. DAVIES, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,772, dated November 6, 1855.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. DAVIES, of the city of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Caps; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, which represent a vertical section of a chimneycap of sheet metal placed upon the top of a chimney.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of certain parts as hereinafter described, by which means the draft of chimneys is improved and the smoke is prevented from being forced down the chimney by high winds or concussions of the atmosphere. In the present instance I construct a cylindrical tube A, resting upon a square plate B, which is placed upon the top of the chimney C. There is an opening in the plate B, corresponding with the interior of the tube A. A reversed cone D, is placed in the outlet of the tube, and properly stayed in such a position as to leave an opening or smoke passage all around it. Over the cone D, and tube A is placed an outer cap E sufliciently larger in diameter than the tube A, to leave an air passage around the tube about equal in width to that left between the upper part of the tube A, and the inverted cone D. The upper portion of the cap E is narrowed at the top in the form of a truncated cone, leaving an opening at the top for the egress of the smoke, when not prevented from passing out by gusts of Wind or other concussions of the atmosphere having a tendency to force the smoke down the chimney again. In this latter case the smoke instead of being driven down the tube A is forced down the passage a, and escapes, being directed toward the sides of the cap E, by the base of the cone D. hen the downward pressure does not exist, and when the smoke passes out of the top of the cap the passage a, performs another function; that of aiding the draft of the chimney by means of a current of air which sets upward through the passage a.
In the example given in the drawing, and described above, a horizontal section exhibits all the parts in the form of concentric circles, but I do not confine myself to that form. The section of the tube A may be a square, parallelogram or other form, in which case the outer cap should conform thereto, and the cone be replaced by an inverted pyramid, wedge or corresponding shape.
I do not claim the cone or the other parts separately considered but \Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent'is The combination of the cap E, and the cone D, with the tube A arranged substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification this 27th day of June 1855.
JOHN W. DAVIES. In the presence of Las. D. BROWNE, WILLIAM CLARK.
