The invention relates to box forming machines and has for its object'to provide a device of this charactercomprising a base member having adjustably mountedthereon brackets for engaging the sides of the ends and partition members of a box and to provide a longitudinally movable bar slidably mounted in the base and provided with brackets which are adjustably mounted thereon and are provided with spring actuated members for engaging the end and partition members of the box for holding said end and partition members in engagement with the adjustable brackets carried by the base, so that a box may be easily formed.
A further object is to provide spring means for normally holding the slidable bar and its adjustable brackets out of clamping engagement with the end and partition members, and to provide pivoted link members whereby the slidable bar may be forced longitudinally against the action of its spring.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base of the machine andcomprises spaced members 2, which spaced members are held in spaced relation to each other by means of transversely disposed members 3. The members-2 at points sub-v stantially centrally thereof are provided with longitudinally disposed elongated slots 4, in which slots the brackets 5 are adjustably secured by means of bolts 6. Brackets ,5 are adapted to be adjusted according to the length of box being formed and also to the position of the central partition 7 in relation .to the ends 8 of the box. Slidablv mounted between the spaced bars 2 is a slidable bar 9, to one end of which is connected as at 10 a coiled spring 11, the other end of said coiled spring being connected as at 12 to one of the cross members 3. The coiled springnormally moves the slidable bar 9 in the direction of the arrow a and therefore holds the partition and end engaging members normally out of engagement with the partition 7. and ends 8. The brackets 13 are adjustably mounted in the slidable bar justed as desired. The spring actuated members 16 are-provided with lugs 17, which lugs 'pass through apertures in the brackets 13 and have threaded on their end nuts 18 by means of whichnuts the relation of the spring actuated clamping member 16 in relation to the bracket 13 may be regulated.

ends of said links having pivoted thereto as at 22 a second pair of links '23, which second pair of links have their other ends pivoted in a bracket 24L carried by the base 1 of the machine. their pivotal points 22 is a pivoted handle member 25, said handle member forming means whereby the operator may force theadjacent ends of the links 21 and 23 downwardly into alinement with each other, thereby causing the slidable bar 9 to be moved to the full line position shown in Fig. 3 and consequently causing the end and partition members 8 and 7 of the box or crate that is being formed to be securely clamped and held between the brackets 5 and partition members of the crate may be adl Pivoted to the links 21 and 23 at the spring actuated members 16. When the links 21 and 23 are in alinement with each other, it will be seen that the slidable bar 9 will be held against the movement in the direction of the arrow a under the influence of the spring 11, When it is desired to allow the spring 11 to move the slidable bar 9 in the direction of the arrow at an upward pull is imparted on the handle member 25, or if so desired the handle member being pivoted at a point 22, it may be simply tilted until it engages'the pin 26 thereby causing the pivotal point 22 to move upwardly to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3.
When this is done the sarin actuated clamping members 16 are moved out of engagement with the ends 8 of the partition 7.
When it is desired to form a box the partition 7 and the ends are placed in the positions shown in Fig. 1, that is after the 'brackets have been properly adjusted for the length of box desired. The handle member 25 when forced downwardly will cause partition member 7 and the end members 8 to be securely clamped, thereby allowing side and bottom strips to be secured to the partition and end pieces 7 and 8. v
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A box forming machine comprising a base, brackets carried by said base, a slidable 'bar slidably mounted in the base, brackets carried by said slidable bar and adapted to cooperate with the brackets carried by the base, said slidable" barbeing horizontally disposed, a coiled spring con nected to one end of the slidable bar-and to the'bas'e forflnormally holdingthe slidable bar and its brackets out of operative position, linkconnections comprising a pair of links 'pivoted together and having their other ends pivoted to the base and to the end of the slidable bar, said link connections when in alinement forcing the brackets carried by the slidable bar and the base into clamping position, and a handle pivoted to the links at their pointof pivotal connection to each other, said handle extending upwardly where it can be readily grasped by the operator.
2. A box forming machine comprising a base, longitudinally adjustable brackets disposed on each side of the-base and adapted to engage one side of an article, a slidable bar slidably mounted in the base, longitudinally adjustable brackets carried by said bar, spring actuated members carried by the brackets of the adjustable bar and adapted to be forced into and out of engagement with articles which are in engagement with the brackets ofthe base, a spring connected to one end of the bar and to the base for normally holding the spring actuated members out of engagement with the articles being held, a pair oflinks' pivoted together and having one oftheir ends pivoted to the base, the other end of one of the links being pivoted to the slidable bar, a handle member pivoted to the links at their pivotal point and extending upwardly, said handle member forming means whereby on a downward movement of the same the links may be forced into alinement for moving the slidable bar during a clamping operation and out of alinementonan upward movement for allowing the spring to move the slidable bar in the opposite direction during an unclai'nping operation.
