Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, resident of Amesbury, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have made a certain new 2nd useful Invention in Cowl-Ventilators or lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked there on, which form a part of thifipfifification.

The invention relates to a cowl ventilator for motor vehicles, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth. 1
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the cowl, the top of which is provided with an elongated opening 3, wherein is seated a metal lining 4, provided with rear notches 6, open at their lower ends, and with rear perforated lugs 7 said notches extending upwardly to said lugs. The lining is provided with a flange 4 which rests upon the detail perspective view of the ,top of the cowl, and the lugs 7 are located beneath and concealed by said flange.
Fitting over the opening 3 is a cover 8, having. a downturned marginal flange engaging the upturned flange 9, of said lin ing, the cover being provided with a downward extension 10, and bolted or screwed to this extension at 11, 11, is a hinge casting 12, having rearwardly projecting lugs 13, engaging the notches 6. and provided with perforations in line with those of the lugs 7, a hinge rod 14, engaging the alined perforations. The hinge casting is also provided with a central downward extension 15, projecting below the lugs 13 and below the top of the cowl.
Connecting the front and rear walls 16 Motor-Vehicles; and I declare the foland 17 of the cowl is a rod 18, having at one end engagement with a seat 19 of the rear wall 16, and at its other ,end passing through a perforation 20 of the front wall 17 a nut 21 being threaded on the terminal portion of said rod and engaging the outer face of sa d'wall, and a lock nut 22 being threaded on the rod and engaging the inner face of said wall.
Engaging the rod 18 is a securing or clamp device 23, of spring strap metal, and prov ded with an upper eye 24, formed by bending the strap metal blank centrally thereof, said blank being then bent outwardly to form shoulders 25, and then downwardly to form oblique diverging branches 26, the latter having perforations 27, which are shghtly elliptical or elongated and through which the rod 18 passes. The eye 24 and the lower end of the extension 15, are connected by a rod 28, pivotal screw bolts 29 and 30 being the medium of connection.
The tendency of the branches 26, to spring farther apart or outwardly through their inherent elasticity causes the upper and lower portions of the marginal walls of the perforations 27 ,to bind frictionally against the rod 18, to thereby secure the clamp dey vice against movement slidably along said rod and also secure the cover 8 in position as adjusted to raised or other position.
In operation, the branches of the clamp device are pressed together to release the frictional bind of the upper and lower portions of the marginal walls of the perforations 27' against the rod. 18, after which the clamp devlce can be moved slidably along the rod to raise the cover to any suitable or desired degree or to lower the previously raised cover, the branches 26 being then released and automatically springing back to normal position in frictional engagement with said rod to hold the adjustment.
In this adjustment or movement, the extension 15 of the cover acts as a lever and forms with the rod 28 a joint of the nature of a knee or toggle joint. The result is'that the clamp device is readily operable for the purpose stated and a given movement thereof causes a considerably greater opening or closing movement of the cover.
I claim '1. In a cowl ventilator for motor vehicles, a cowl having a ventilating opening in the v and an operating connection between said' shaft and said cover to raise and lower the cover upon adjustment of the clamp and to support the cover 1n ralsed pos1t10n.

In a cowl ventilator for motor ve' hicles, a cowl having a ventilating opening in the top thereof, a lining for said opening having a flange engaging the top of the cowl and hinge lugs located beneath said flange, a cover for said opening having hinge lugs pivotally connected with the first named lugs, a stationary rod, a spring clamp adjustable along and automatically grippin said i-od, a shaft carried by said clamp, an

3. In a cowl ventilator for motor vehicles, a cowl having a ventilating opening in the top thereof, a lining for said opening, having a flange engaging the top of the cowl and hinge lugs located beneath said flange and 'slots' extending upwardly to said hinge lugs, a cover for said opening having hinge lugs movablein said slots and pivotally connected with the first named lugs, a stationary rod, a spring clamp adjustable along and automatically gripping said rod, a shaft carried by said clamp, and an operating connection between said shaft and said cover.
