Description

L. A. BOYD.
COMBINED STEP LADDER AND EXTENSION LADDER APPLICATION FILED MAY 25, 1920.

LITTLETON A. BOYD, OF ILLIOPOLIS, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED STEPLADDER AND EXTENSION-LADDER.
Application filed May 25, 1920. Serial No. 384,106.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LITTLETON AnA ws BOYD, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Illiopolis, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined. Stepladder and Extension-Ladder, of which the following is a specification. Y
The object of my invention is to provide a novel ladder adapted for use either as a stepladder or as a straight or extension ladder. I attain the objects of my invention by the device illustrated in the accompanyingrdrawings, in which igure 1 is a rear elevation of the ladder extended;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; I
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, the ladder being shown in straight or extended position in dotted lines, and
Fig. 4 is a top plan.
Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings I provide suitable ladder sections 1 and 2 of substantially similar length, having steps 3 extending in substantially parallel arrangement when the sections 1 and 2 are alined as shown in Fig. 1. I further provide a suitable tions a hook 5 and atongue 6,'secured to bears against the topmost steps.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 12, 1921.:
one of the steps of the other section and adapted to be engaged bythe hook 5.
I provide novel means for securin the ladder in osition for use as a step lad er as shown in ig. 4:, consisting of the board 8 which is inserted under the hinge rod 9 on the topmost steps. In operation, the device is held in position for use as a step ladder by board 8 which engages under rod 9 and It is secured in extended position by the hook 5 as shown. V
I may provide either steps or rounds in the section formingthe upper part of the ladder, and the term steps is to be construed as including rounds in this specificatio-n.
What I claim is:
In a combined step ladder and extension ladder, the, combination of ladder sections, each of the sections having steps or rounds disposed in substantially parallel relation when the sectionsare extended, the topmost steps or rounds being disposed in proximity to the hinge meansbutspaced sutliciently .7 I therefrom to permit the insertion of a board between the steps and hinge means, hinge means operatively connecting one end of each of the ladder sections, a board adapted to be inserted between said topmost steps or rounds and the hinge means to thereby lock the ladder in position for use as a step ladder, and means carried by one of the sections adapted to be rigidly connected to the other section to lock the sections in longitudinal alinement for use as an ordinary or straight ladder.
