To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Fnnonnrox Wncnntr ANDREW, a citizen of the United Eltates, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in hiagnetosfor Engines, of which the followmg 1s a rull,
clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to magnetos used for igniting the explosive mixtures 1n gas engines, and its object is to provide an electric ignition machine in which the impulse starter and the adjustable driving connection therefor are inclosed in a casing or coversecured to the magneto frame.
It is well known that in magneto installations for gas engines, the impulse starter must be driven by the engine shaft through a flexible or automatically adpistable connection, so as to avoid bindlng and prevent V the nonfunctioning of the magneto. in the prior constructions, this flexible or adjustable connection was in part attached to the impulse starter mounted on the magneto shaft and in part to the engine-driven shaft mounted separately from the magneto. Furthermore, the impulse starter and its flexible coupling, being thus separately mounted, were left exposed. Now, when an auto-vehicle is operated for long periods of time over dusty'ground (as, for instance, a tractor used in dusty fields), the abrasive character of the dust has a deleterious effect on the exposed impulse starter and its flexible coupling, causing the parts to wear out prematurely.

As my invention may be applied to various types and forms of magnetos, l have not deemed it necessary to illustrate any particular magneto construction, and so l the magneto l, with the casing or cover have merely shown a portion of the supporting iramework 1 which carries the permal. nent field magnets 2 and the other usual parts appertaining to machines of this type. 'lhe framework has an end plate 3 in which is journaied one end of the rotatable mac"- neto shaft 4. On the projecting end of tlie magneto shaft d is mounted an impulse starter, indicated as a whole by IS. The specific form of impulse starter is not mater1al to my invention, and for the sake of convenience I have shown an impulse starter like that disclosed in my Patent No. 1,342,199, dated June 1, 1920. it will, therefore, not be necessary to describe here the details of construction and operation of this impulse starter, for these are set forth in my aforesaid patent. For the purpose of explaining my present invention, it is suiticient to say that the impulse starter IS comprises the driving member 5 and the driven member 6, which are operatively connected together by the coil spring 7. The driving member 5 is provided with diametrically arranged lugs 8 for engaging in the notches 9 of the coupling disk 10.

This casing or cover is secured to the framework of the magneto. in the drawing I have shown the casing C secured to the end plate 3 by means of screws 11, which pass through the openings 12 of the easing into the screw-threaded holes 13 of the end plate. Other suitable ways and means may be employed for attaching the casing C to the magneto frame. Y Preferably the axial alinement of the Gil secured to said framework and inclosing said impuise starter, a stub-shaft journaled in said casing in axial alinement with the magneto shaft and projecting outside the casing for connection with the engine, said casing and stub-shaft being removable and replaceable as a unit without disturbing said members of the impulse starter, the inner end of said stub-shaft being provided with lugs, and a coupling disk positioned between the driving member of the impulse starter and the inner end on the stub-shaft, said coupling disk having notches or recesses for engaging both sets of said lugs, said coupling disk and lugs permitting ready removal and replacing of the casing and stub-shaft.

In a magneto for gas engines, a framework having a closed casing or cover secured at one end thereof, an impulse starter mounted on the magneto shaft within said casing, a driving stub-shaft journaled in said casing and having a portion projecting outside for connection with the engine, said casing and stub-shaft being removable and replaceable as a unit without disturbing said members of the impulse starter, and a flexible or adjustable coupling within said casing for operatively connecting the impulse starter to said stub-shaft, said coupling being automatically separable when the casing and stub-shaft are removed.

In a magneto for gas engines, a framework including an end plate provided with a bearing for the magneto shaft which projects through said end plate, an impulse starter comprising a driven member and a driving member, a casing or cover secured to said end plate and inclosing said impulse starter, a stub-shaft journaled in the outer end of said casing in axial alinement with the magneto shaft and projecting outside the casing for connection with the engine, said casing and stub-shaft being removable and replaceable without separating said members of the impulse starter, an automatically adjustable coupling within said casing for transmitting the rotation of the stubshaft to the magneto shaft through the impulse starter, said coupling being automatically separable when the casing and stub-shaft are removed, and interlocking means on said end plate and said casing for centering the casing on the end plate and maintaining it in that position. 1

In a magneto for gas engines, a sub stantially dust-proof casing or cover removably secured to one end of the magneto frame, an impulse starter within said cover, a driving shaft journaled in said cover and adapted to be connected with the engine, and an automatically adjustable coupling within said casing for transmitting the rotation of said driving shaft to the magneto shaft through said impulse starter, said coupling being automatically separable when the casing and driving shaft are removed.
8. In a magneto for gas engines, a substantially dust-proof casing or cover removably secured to one end of the magneto frame, an impulse starter within said cover, a driving shaft journaled in said cover and adapted to be connected with the engine, and a lug-and-slot coupling within said casing for transmitting the rotation of said driving shaft to the magneto shaft through said impulse starter, said coupling being automatically sepa rable when the casing and driving shaft are removed.
