Specification of Letters Patent.

Implication filed November 19, 1919. Serial Ito. 33%,021.
T all whom. "it may canoe m Be it known that l, LYMAN A. TRULL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lWill-iamsport, in the county of lily coming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Vulcanized Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 1
This invention relates more particularly to rubber-soled shoes of the type having a. canvas upper and an outer sole of rubber.
The invention has for its object to provide a shoe of the said type which closely resembles a Goodyear Welt shoe, and in which the margin of the outer sole is, efl'ect, secured to the inner sole by permanent metallic or other fastenin means Which is entirely concealed.
Theinvention will be understood by reference to the accompanying draw-rings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a shoe embodying the invention, parts being cut away and laid back to disclose certain details of construction.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail view illustrating the relative arrangement of the parts.
the drawings, the be made of fiber board, leather or other suitable material is first placed upon the bottom of the last. T he upper 2 of canvas or other suitable fabric is then shaped to the last and its margin 3 turned over and secured to the inner sole, preferably by tacks the points of which are clenched to theinner sole by striking against the bottom oithe las It is to be understood however that, if desired, stitches, cement, or other means may be employed instead of tacks to secure the overthe upper to the inner sole. The. welt strip 5 oE-rubber composition is next applied about the edge of the shoe, and is so dispose. that its inner portion ("7 lies upon overlasted margin 3 of the upper, while its outer portion 7 protrudes beyond the upper, giving to the shoe the appean ance and the advantages of a leather shoe of the Welt type. Preferably, the upper surface 8 of the protruding'portion 7 of the Welt strip is formed With transverse ridges 9 to simulate-the indented stitching of a leather shoe. It will be noted that thepor tion of the strip which lies upon the folded argi'n 3 of the upper is reduced in thickness so as to provide a shoulder against which the upper r sts at the line of fold of the said margin, and a second shoulder lying against the edge of a fabric binder sheet 11. By this means the Welt is so positioned with respect to the upper as to enhance the appearance of the shoe, and the said shoulders aid in resisting the strains upon the projecting margin of the outer sole which tend to pull the latter loose from the insole.
After the welt strip has been applied, the space Within its inner margin is filled with suitable vulcaniZa-ble plastic composition 10 to level the bottom of the shoe.
The binder sheet 11 is next applied.
This sheet is composed. of fabric frictioned or otherwise coated on both sides with rubber. The binder sheet is employed to enable at strong vulcanized union to be formed between the rubber outer sole and the filler. The binder sheet in the present instance overlaps the tape like extension of the Welt strip Which lies over the margin 3 of the upper, and metallic fasteners 12 employed to secure the wait st ip to the inner sole are driven through the binder sheet. Any other suitable fastening means may be, employed in place of the metallic fasteners.
The toe portion of a shoe is obviously subjected to greater strains in service than the other parts. For the purpose of strengthening this part of the shoe and of providing a body of fabric of increased thickness to prevent the staples from tearing through the binder sheet when heavy strains are encountered, a ,toe reinforcing piece 13,
formed of fabric coated on both sides With rubber, is employed. This piece is of a size and shape corresponding with the toe portion of the binder sheet on which it is superposed. The staples 12 used to'secure the toe portion of the binder sheet are driven. through this piece. r
The rubber outer sole 14c and heel 15, which may be formed integrally or separately as desired, are next cemented in place.
They are made of sufficient size to extend to I the extreme ridge of the Welt to give the deized together.
sired strength and body to the boot or shoe and the neat and attractive appearance characteristic of a leather shoe.
When the Shoe has been built up asset forth it is finally subjected to vulcanization whereby the parts are permanently vulcan- During vulcanization the outer sole and welt strip are so united as to become in effectan integral structure. Therefore the staples '12 afford means by which the outsole near its margins is secured to the inner sole by permanent fasteners which are entirely concealed.
Shoes manufactured in accordance with the invention are of attractive appearance and possess greater strength and wearing qualities than any of the other shoes of this character heretofore known.
Although one of ,the preferred embodiments of the invention has been described, it is to be understood that various modifications in the number, form, material and arrangement of the parts may be resortedto Without departingfrom the spirit and scope or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention defined in the appended claims.
-Havin thus described my invention, what I c aim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: I
1. A shoe comprising an insole, an upper having its lower margin turned over upon the insole, a vulcanized outer sole, and a vulcanized welt strip intermediate the insole and outsole, the said welt strip being secured to the insole by metallic fastening devices extending through the said margin of the upper.
2. 'A shoe comprising an insole, an uppe having its lower margin turned over upoil 1 the insole, a vulcanized outer sole, and a}- vulcanized welt strip intermediate the in-'- sole and outsole, Secured to the insole by metallic fastening devices extending through the margin of the upper and being integrally united with the outsole by vulcanization.
3. A shoe comprisi'i gan insole, an upper having its lower margin folded over upon the insole, a vulcanized outer sole, a'nda vulcanized welt strip intermediate the insole and outsole and coextensive with the margin of the latter, the said Welt stri being formed with a shoulder a ainst w ich the upper rests at the line of ibld of said margin, and being secured to the insole by metallic fastening devices extending through the margin of the upper;
4. A shoe comprising an insole, an upper having its lower margin turned over upon BOJshe insole, a vulcanized outer sole, a vulcanized welt strip coextensive with the mar gm of the outsole, and formed with a tapethe said welt strip being like extension lying intermediate the soles,
and concealed mechanical fasteningjmeans securing together said insole. margin and extension.
5. A shoe comprising an insole, an upper having its lower margin turned over upon 1 the insole, a vulcanized outer solo, a vulcanized welt strip coextensive with the margin of the outsole, and formed with an extension of reduced thickness lying intermediate the soles, said strip being secured to the insole by metallic fastening pieces ex tending through the margin of the upper.
6. A shoe comprising an insole, an upper having its lower margin turned over upon the insole, avulcanized outer sole, 9,, vulcanized welt strip coextensive with the mar.- gin of the outsole and formed with an extension of reduced thickness lying intermediatc the soles, the said welt strip being so,-
beingsecur ed tbgether by vulcanization, and
metallic fasteners interengaging the welt strip, binder piece, and inner sole.
8. A rubber sole shoe comprising an inner sole, an upper having a margin overlasted on the inner sole and secured thereto, a weltstrip overlapping the overlasted margin of the upper, a binder piece secured to the i inner sole both by vulcanization and b Cnietallic fasteners passing through the iweli \strip, a toe reinforcing piece, and an outer 'soleiunited to the welt strip and binder piece by vulcanization.
9. A rubber sole shoe comprising a fiber board inner sole, a fabric upper having a margin .overlasted on the inner sole and socured thereto by metallic fasteners, a welt strip having an outer margin ,protruding I margin overlapping the overlasted'margin I beyond the sides of the upper and an inner of the upper, a filler within the space bounded by the inner. margin of t h6 wen stripga fabric binder piece secured 111 081- tion vulcanization, a fabric toe rein orcing piece united tofthe binder piece, metallic fasteners securin the toe reinforcing piece, binder piece and nner sole together,-and an outer sole united to the binder reinforcing piecg by vulcanization.
