Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application filed September 18, 1919. Serial No. 324,695.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LE RoY DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 662 East 46th street, in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Electrical Protector, which I have named the Fuse-Wire Reel, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an electrical pro tector in which a reel is wound with a quantity of fuse-wire which can be unwound and placed in the circliit which it is to protect, the said wire resting on metal supports which are electrically connected with the said circuit, and the mechanism being mounted on an insulating base.
The objects of my invention are:
1. To provide an electrical protector in which a quantity of reserve fuse-wire is stored, so that its fuse, if it be destroyed, can be readily replaced by another.
2. To provide an electrical protector which will not need frequent or extensive repairs.
3. To provide an electrical protector which will be simple to operate, cheap to maintain and which will have a moderate initial cost. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a view of this device which shows its side elevation partly in section.

1 is an insulating base. 2 and 3 are holes in the base 1 for the screws which support the appliance in a permanent position on a wall or elsewhere. 4 and 5 are holes in the base 1 through which circuit wires enter the device from its rear. 6 is a frame which holds a stationary shaft on which is mounted a movable spool containing fuse wire, the said frame forming three sides of a square and having a hole in each of its vertical sides for the said shaft, and a hole in its horizontal side through which passes a bolt 7 by which the said frame is secured on the base 1. 8 is a movable spool for the reserve fuse-wire. 9 is a stationary shaft on which the spool 8 is mounted, which passes through one side of the frame 6, through the spool 8, through the opposite side of the frame 6 and through the nut 10 by which it is secured. 11 and 12 are L-shaped metal lugs which support that part of the fusewire by which the circuit is protected. 13 and 14 are binding posts on the lugs 11 and 12 with which are connected the circuit wires which enter the device through the holes 5 and 4.- in the base 1. These binding posts also secure the lugs 11 and 12 on the base 1. 15 and 16 are slots on the lugs 11 and 12 in which rests the circuit fuse wire 18 which is attached to the binding post 17 on lug 12.
The base 1 can be made of any insulating substance which is used in the construction of switch bases. The frame 6 and the spool 8 can be made of any adaptable metals or non-metallic materials. The lugs 11 and 12 should be copper. The shaft 9 and the nut 10 can be an ordinary bolt and nut having the proper dimensions. Before winding the spool 8, it should be covered with any substance which will prevent the wire from slipping. If the spool 8 moves too freely, a washer can be placed on the shaft with it. When the spool has been wound, it must be put into the frame in that position which will allow the wire 18 to appear as it is shown in the drawing. A switch must be used in conjunction with this device to prevent shocks or burns from being received. The current carrying capacity of this appliance is governed by the size of the fuse wire which it contains; therefore, it can be made for all sizes of fuse wire.
I claim:
1. In a device of the type described, the combination with an insulating base, two L shaped members mounted thereon, each having fuse receiving means in its free end, one of said members having a binding post mounted thereon adjacent to its fuse receiving means, of a fuse holding reel on which a fuse wire may be wound, a section of said fuse wire being adapted to be held by said means, with its free end secured by said binding post, and means, frictionally to hold said fuse Wire in said receiving means, all means for supporting said reel onsaid substantially as described. holder, all substantially as described.
