Description

l A. DAVISa TML HOLDER APPucAneN ms!) ma. H, mm.
Pat/mm Apr. 12 M23...
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMIAS A. DAVIS, 0F GBANDVIEVT, WASHINGTON.
TAIL-HOLDER.
Application filed January 11, 1919.
To all to/20m it may concern- Be it known that i, THOMAS A. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grandview, in the county of Yakima and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tail Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in tail holders for cows, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having-novel and improved means whereby the tail of a cow is held against switching.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this character comprising two coacting spring pressed jaws adapted to grasp the bush of acows tail after said bush has been disposed about a leg of the animal, whereby the tail is prevented from switching, and wherein the jaws are provided with supplemental jaws to engage the spread of the bush to further assure the maintenance of the tail against switching.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved tail holder whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating aholder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied position, the animal being indicated in outline by dotted lines;
Fig. '2 is a view partly in end elevation and partly in section of my improved holder as herein included;
Fig. 3 is a viewpartly in longitudinal section and partly in plan of my improved holder as herein employed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved holder comprises two jaw members 1 with which coacts a tubular resilient member 2 connecting said jaw mem- Specificaticn of Letters Patent.

hers and serving to constantly urge the same one toward the other. The rear longitudinal marginal portions of the jaw members 1 substantially midway thereof are provided with the extensions or finger pieces 8 extending'through openings 4 provided at the rear portion of the member 2.
The member 2 urges the outer longitudinal marginal portions of the members 1 one toward the other, and the members 1 are provided adjacent their outer longitudinal margins with the beads 5 which engage against the longitudinal edges of the member 2 to prevent displacement of the jaw members.
The end portions of the members 1 inwardly of the bead 5 are bent inwardly as indicated at 6 along the oblique lines A extending from the outer ends of the members 1 to a point in close proximity to the eX- tensions or finger pieces 3. By having the inwardly bent portions 6 the rear portions of the members 1 effectively clamp the bush of the cows tail when the device is in applied position.
it has also been found of advantage and importance to provide the outer longitudinal marginal portions of the members 1 with supplemental jaws 7. Each ofthejaws 7 is of a length less than the coacting member 11 and is positioned substantially midway thereof, and said supplemental aw 7 is also of a width materially less than the member 1. The supplemental jaws 7 operate to hold the spread of the tail when the device is in use as the opposed faces of said supplemental jaws 7 will effectively clamp the spread therebetween.
in practice the bush of the cows tail is separated with a hind leg arranged between said separated portions. My improved holder is then engaged with the portion of the bush outwardly of the leg so that the tail is effectually held in a manner to prevent switching thereof, which is particularly desirable during a milking operation. 7
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a tail holder con structed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and for-V mation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
What is claimed is:
A tail holder comprising a pair of jaw members, a supplemental jaw projectingi'rom the front portion of each of said jaws in the plane of said jaw, the corner portions
