* Figs, I and XX. hen this lever is adjusted to one position the presser foot bar is raised to inoperative position as shown in Fig. IV, and when adjusted to another position the presser foot is moved to its actuating or operative position,see Fig. III.
A supporting plate or slide 8 is mounted on the bed below the head 2. This slide is mounted for adjustment, being slotted at 9 to receive the squared collar 10 on the post 11 disposed at the rear of the head, thereby supporting the slide for longitudinal and pivotal movement on the bed of the machine. The slide 8 is provided at its rear end with vertically slotted bearings 12 for the pivots 13 of the frame 1 1. The rear end of the frame is yieldingly supported by the coiled spring 15 arranged on the screw 16 disposed through the rear end of the frame in line with its pivots and threaded into the slide,seeFig. III. The opening 17 in the frame for this screw is of such dimensions as to allow the pivotal movement of the frame. At its forward end this frame carries the work shoe 18 having a label opening 19 therein. The slide 8 has a stitching opening 20 therein below the label opening 19. The frame-like label holder 21 has a rearwardly projecting arm 22 pivoted at 23 in the frame. This label holder 21 is substantially that shown in our application for. patent re ferred to.
A coiled spring 24 bears on the rear end of the arm 22 holding the label holder yieldingly in elevated position. At the front of the label holder is a feed table 25 for the labels. This feed table has longitudinal ribs 26 on its surface supporting the labels arranged thereon so as to be effectively engaged by the fingers 27 of the feed member 28 which is slidably mounted on the frame so that when in retracted position as shown in Fig. VII a label may be laid in front of it on the table. The feed member is retained in its retracted position by means of the catch 29 pivoted at 30 to engage the keeper 31 on the feed member,see Figs. VI and VII. The feed member is provided with a finger piece 32 projecting through a longitudinal slot 33 in the top plate 34 of the frame member.
The feed member is actuated by the coiled spring 35 which is connected to the frame member at one end and to a link 36 pivoted at 37. This link is slotted at 38 to engage the pin 39 on the feed member. IVith the parts thus arranged the feed member is actuated without danger of its binding in its way.
The label holder 21 has inclined guides 10 on its front side so that as the label is fed to position by the feed member it is guided under the label holder. The label holder is preferably provided with teeth 41 and the work shoe with holes 42 alined with these teeth so that the label is Very firmly clamped to the work shoe along the edges of the opening 19. The position of the label while stitching is shown in Fig. V. After the stitching is completed the label holder is released by raising the presser bar 5 allowing the edge of the label to slip through the opening. The frame 14 is provided with handles 13 projecting laterally at each side to be grasped by the operator for manipulation of the slide and with it the work carried thereby.
To guide the movement of the slide the bed of the machine is provided with a guide cam member 44 havin a slot-like guide cam 45 therein with whic a pin or lug 46 on the slide 8 coacts. This guide cam 45 is slightly curved to accommodate the swinging of the slide on the post 11 and is of suitable .shape to control or guide the stitching of the label. It will be understood that the shape may be varied according to the shape of the label which is to be attached.
A plate 47 on the slide projects under the cam member 44 and assists in holding the parts in coacting relation. The label holder is clamped upon the labels and the work shoe to the work by means of the presser plate L8 carried by the presser bar 5. This plate also constitutes means for raising the frame 14: to permit the arrangement of the work upon the slide below the work shoe, see the position in Fig. IV. This is accomplished in the structure illustrated by providing the frame with an arm 49 projecting forwardly over the rear end of the presser plate so that when the presser plate is ele vated by raising the presser bar by means of the lever 7 the presser plate engages this arm as lifting the work shoe.
As stated, the slide is shifted manually, being guided in its movement by the coacting guide members on the bed and the slide, and to control this shifting, thereby making the stitches uniform, we provide feed control dogs 50 supported in a reciprocating feed control member 51 to coact with oppositely disposed toothed bars or racks 52 on the slide. The feed control member 51 is disposed through the bed 1 of the machine as shown in Fig. XIII to be actuated by means of the lever 53 pivoted at 54 and having a roller 55 engaged by a cam 56 on the shuttle shaft 6. These feed control dogs 50 y are disposed in opposed relation as are also their eoacting racks so that the movement of the feed slide is controlled in both directions. It will be understood that during the interval in which the feed control dogs are raised from engagement with the racks the slide may be swung or shifted and by the operator exerting a continuous pressure in the direction in which it is desired to shift the slide a step by step feed movement is secured, resulting in the stitches being properly spaced.
When the stitching is completed the threads are cut and for cutting the lower thread we provide a blade 57 pivoted at 58 to be operated by the reciprocating rod 59 having a pin and slot connection therewith as shown in Fig. XVIII, the rod having a handpiece 6O projecting upwardly at its outer end and a return spring 61. A spring 62 bears against the under side of the cutter, the spring being carried by a bar 63, see I igs. XVIII and XIX.
The upper or needle thread cutter 64L is actuated by the slide 65, a coacting shear bar 68 being provided as shown in Figs. X, XI and XII. A spring 69 holds the cutter 64: firmly upon the shear bar. The slide performs a double function, being provided with a stop 70, which when the slide is in its forward position, projects into the path of a lug 71 on the presser plate 18.

In the embodiment shown in Figs. XX, XXI and XXII, we provide means for automatically shutting 0d the current when the presser foot 5 is raised, either by means of the lever 7 or when it is attempted to use the machine for sewing on something that is heavier than the needle will stand.
This we accomplish by providing the cir' cuit wires 80 of the motor with contacts 81, mounted on an insulating member 82, carried by a nipple 83 threaded into the head. (See Fig. XXII.) The contacts 81 are connected by the contact 84: held normally in the engaging position by spring 85. The reciprocating rod 86 is raised with the presser foot. This rod has an insulating tip 8?, engaging the contact 84, so that when the rod is raised the circuit is broken and the motor stopped; when the foot is lowered, the circuit is again closed and the motor started.
I'Vith the parts thus arranged, we provide a machine which is of large capacity and which is simple and convenient to operate. The machine we have illustrated and described is especially designed by us for'the attaching of laundry marking labels. ()ur improvements may, .however, be readily adapted for various uses.
We have not attempted to illustrate or describe other adaptations, as we believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which our invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed thereof, of a'post'on said bed, a supporting slide slotted to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging movement, coacting guide members on said bed and slide whereby the said supporting slide may be moved in a determined path, a frame pivotally mounted at its rear end on said supporting slide, a work shoe at the forward end of said frame having a label opening therein, a frame-like label holder pivotally mounted on said frame to coact with said shoe and clamp a label around the edges of the label opening therein, a presser plate coacting with said label holder to clamp the same upon the label and the shoe upon the work, said shoe being raised with the raising of said presser plate, a feed control means for sait, supporting slide comprising a reciprocating control member having driving connections with the machine, a pair of oppositel disposed dogs on said control member, coacti racks on said slide, a slide mounted on said frame constituting a stop, said presser being provided with a coacting ston, means for automatically actuating said slide to project its stop upon the actuation oi said supporting slide, and manually operated means for retracting said stop.
In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed thereof, or post on said bed, a supporting slide slotted to engage said post for longitudinal and swin 1g move ment, coacting guide members on said bed and slide whereby the said supporting slide may be moved in a determined path, a frame pivotally mounted at its rear end on said supporting sliee, a worl: shoe at the forward end oft said frame having a label opening therein, a frame-like label holder pivotally mounted on said frame to coaet with said shoe and clamp a label around the edges of the label opening therein, a presser plate coasting with aid label holder to clamp the same upon the label and the shoe upon the worlz, said shoe being raised with the raising of said presser plate, a feed control means it said supporti slide comprising a reciprocating control member having driving connections with the machine, a pair of oppositely disposed dogs on said control. member, and coacting racks on said slice.

In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed thereof, of a post on said bed, a supporting slide slot-ted to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging movement, coacting guide members on said bed and slide whereby the said supporting slide may be moved in a determined path, a frame pivotally mounted at its rear end on said supporting slide, a work shoe at the forward end of said frame having a label opening therein, a trame like holder pivotally mounted on said frame to coact with said shoe and clamp a label around the edges of the label opening therein, a presser plate coacting with said label holder to clamp the same upon the label. and the shoeupon the work, said shoe being raised with the raising of said presser plate, a feed control means for said supporting slide, a slide mounted on said frame constituting a stop, said presser plate being provided with a coacting stop, means for automatically actuating said slide to project its stop upon the actuation of said supporting slide, and
manually operated means for retracting said stop.

In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed thereof, of a post on said bed, a supporting slide slotted to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging move ment, guide means whereby the said sup porting slide may be manually moved in a determined path, a work shoe carried by said slide havin a label opening therein, a label holder coacting with said shoe to clamp a label around the edges of the label opening the sin, teed control means for said supporting slide comprising a reciprocating control member having driving connections with the machine, a pair of oppositely disposed dogs on said control member, and coacting racks on said slide.

In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed thereof, of a post on said bed, a supporting slide slotted to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging move ment, guide means whereby the said supporting slide may be manually moved in a determined path, a work shoe carried by said slide having a label opening therein, a label hol-rlor coacting with said shoe to clamp a label around the edges of the label opening therein, a presser plate enacting with said label holder to clamp the same upon the label and the shoe upon the work, said shoe being raised with the raising of said prosser plate, a ibod control means for said supporting slide, a slide mounted on said frame constituting a stop, said presser plate being provided with coacting stop, means for automatically actuating said slide to project its stop upon the actuation of said supporting slide, and manually operated means for retracting said stop.

In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed thereof, of a post on said bed, supporting slide slotted to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging movement, guide means whereby the said supporting slide may be manually moved in a determined path, a work shoe carried by said slide having a label opening therein, alabel holder coasting with said shoe to clamp a label around the edges of the label opening therein, and a feed control means for said supporting slide.

In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed thereof, of a supporting slide mounted for longitudinal and swinging movement. a work shoe carried by said slide having a label opening therein, a label holder coacting with said shoe to clamp a label around the edges of the label opening therein, a presser plate coacting with said label holder to clamp the same upon the label and the shoe upon the work, said shoe being raised with the raising of said presser plate, a -l'eed control means for said supporting slide comprising a reciprocating control member having driving connections with the machine, a pair of oppositely disposcd dogs on said control member, coacting racks on said slide, a slide mounted on said frame constituting a stop, said presser plate being provided with a coacting stop, means for automatically actuating said slide to project its stop upon the actuation of said supporting slide, and manually operated means for retracting said stop.
10. In a sewing machine, the combination with the bed thereof, of a supporting slide mounted for longitudinal and swinging movement, a work shoe carried by said slide, a feed control means for said supporting slide comprising a reciprocating control member having driving connections with the machine, a pair of oppositely disposed dogs on said control member, and coacting racks on said slide.

In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a post on said bed, a supporting slide slotted to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging movement and adapted for manual manipulation, co acting guide members on said bed and slide whereby the slide may be moved in a deter mined ath, means for holding said work upon said supporting slide, a feed control means for said supporting slide comprising a reciprocating control member having driving connections with the machine, a pair of oppositely cing dogs on said control member, and coacting racks on said slide.
12. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a post on said bed, a supporting slide slotted to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging movement and adapted "for manual manipulation, coacting guide members on said'bed and slide whereby the slide may be moved in a determined path, means for holding the work upon said supporting slide, and a feed control means for said supporting slide.
13. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a supporting slide mounted for longitudinal and swinging movement and adapted for manual manipulation, work holding means on said supporting slide, a feed control means for said slide comprising a reciprocating control member having driving connections with the machine, a pair of oppositely facing dogs on said control member, and coasting racks on said slide.
14. In a sewing machine, the combination with bed, of a supporting slide mounted for longitudinal and swinging movement and adapted for manual manipulation, work holding means on said supporting slide, and a feed control means for said slide.
15. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a work holding means adapted to be manually moved in a determined path, and a feed control means therefor having driving connections with the machine comprising a dog device alternately engaging and releasing said work holding means.
16. in a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a work holding means adapted to be manually moved in a determined path, and a feed control means to secure intermittent movement therefor having driving connections with the machine.
17. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a work holding means adapted to be manually actuated, and a feed control to secure intermittent movement for said work holding means causing a step by step movement thereof.
18. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a post on said bed, a supporting slide slotted to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging movement thereon, said slide being provided with vertically slotted bearing members at its rear end, a frame having journals disposed in said slotted bearings, a post disposed on said supporting slide between the bearings and arranged through an opening in said plate and provided with a nut above the plate, a supporting spring arranged on said post below the frame. and a work shoe at the forward end of said frame.
19. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a post on said bed, a supporting slide slotted at its rear end to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging movement thereon, a work sho carried by said supporting slide, and a guide cam member projecting at the forward end of said bed, said supporting slide having a coacting cam member and provided with a plate engaging the under side of said cam member.
20. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a post on said bed, a supporting slide slotted at its rear end to engage said post for longitudinal and swinging movement thereon, a work shoe carried by said supporting slide, and a guide cam member at the forward end of said bed, said supporting slide having a coacting cam member.
21. In a sewing machine, the combination with a bed, of a work shoe having a label opening therein, a label holder coacting with said work shoe to clamp a label around the edges of the label opening, a label feed table on said work shoe, a reciprocating feed member mounted to deliver labels from said table to said work shoe, an actuating means therefor comprising a pivoted link having pin and slot engagement with said feed member, and a spring for actuating said link.
