PARING AND FITTING KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. DUNKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paring and Pitting Knives, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to an improved paring and pitting knife. The object of the invention is to provide an improved oscillatory cutting knife for the pitting and paring of fruit.
Objects of the invention pertaining to details and economiesof construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claim.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:

Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 1 is the handle for the tool. Axially disposed in the end of this handle is a slide 2 having a stem 3 which extends through the bracket 4 into a bearing 5 at the opposite end. This slide is provided with collars 6, 6 on its stem and is caused to reciprocate by rotation of the shaft 7 which is provided with a disk 8 at its end provided with a wrist pin 9 which extends into and engages between the collars 6, 6. When the the shaft 7 is revolved, the action of thepin 9 between the collars 6, 6 causes the reciprocation. The shaft 7 is provided with suitable connection 10 to ,a flexible shaft or other suitable driving means.
(In the reciprocating slide 2 is supported the curved knife 11 which is provided with a straight shank 12 and is retained in a socketfinthe end of the slide 2 by set screw 13. The edge of this knife is serrated. The shaft? is caused to revolve, preferably, at the rate of about 1800 revolutions per minute, so that the knife 11 vibrates very rapidly. It is found that this is a very effective device for removing pits and'cores from fruit and for any purpose of that kind. By substituting the straight knife 14 with a guard 15, the knife is very effective for the peeling of pears or of any hard fruit, as green peaches and the like, or for any use where a straight knife is needed. The reciprocation greatly enhances the cutting quality. The knife has the effect of seeming to be very sharp. I
I have thus described the preferred means for inducing the reciprocation, but it is very clear that various means might be provided for the purpose and I wish to claim my invention broadly as well as specifically, as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
In a parin and pitting knife, the combination of a andle, a slide axially disposed within the handle and a means to reciprocate the slide, and a curved knife axially disposed to said handle and carried by said slide and adapted to be reciprocated thereby,
as specified.
