To a ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT Grow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Plumbers Clean- Outs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in plumbers clean-outs.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a plumbers clean-out with a cover which may be easily and quickly attached or detached and which will be firmly held in the closed position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a plumbers clean-out of novel construction, which is simple in structure, which is economical to manufacture and not liable to get out of order, and which is efficient in operation.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a plumbers clean-out with a cover having a locking lug attached in a novel manner to the body of the cover, whereby the body may be of cast iron and the lug of less brittle material to avoid the liability of breakage in use.
A further object of my invention is to provide a plumbers clean-out of the type employing a ring and a cover therefor in which the ring is provided with an inclined flange adapted for engagement with a lug of softer material on the cover, whereby, upon the tightening of the cover, the flange of the ring will slightly out or abracle the lug, so as to effect a tight and secure engagement between the lug and flange.
Still another object of my invention is to provide in a cleanput of the kind described a resilient gasket between the cover and ring, whereby the cover may be easily loosened without danger of breaking it.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The clean-out is provided with a ring 1 having a peripheral annular flange 2 at its inner end and adapted to be calked in the usual manner in the clean-out opening of an ordinary drain pipe 3.
The ring is preferably tapering, its outer sideconvergingoutwardly, so as to permit the calking 4 to be readily inserted and easily driven into its proper position against the flange 2. 5 designates the body of a cover having two lugs 6, preferably disposed diametrically opposite each other and which are adapted to respectively lockingly engage the inner inclined sides "respectively of two flanges 7 provided on the inner wall of the ring 1 adjacent to the outer end thereof.
The flanges 7 are spaced apart at their ends so as to permit of the insertion between them of the lugs 6, whereby the latter may engage the inclined inner sides of the flanges when the cover is turned to the locking position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
There is preferably inserted between the ring 1 and body 5 a resilient gasket 8 which is adapted to be clamped between the cover and the outer edge of the ring 1. By having the gasket 8 of resilient material, such as soft rubber, or leather, the cover may be struck with a hammer or wrench to force the cover toward the ringfor the purpose of loosening the lugs 6 from engagement with the flanges 7, without liability of breaking the cover.
In order that the oleanout may be cheaply manufactured, the ring 1 and the body 5 of the cover are preferably of cast iron.
In order that the lugs 6 shall not be liable to breakage, they are, preferably, of material softer than cast iron and less brittle. The lugs are preferably composed of an alloy, such as brass, which has suflicient strength for the purpose and which is not liable to rust or stick to the flanges 7. By having the lugs 6 of brass or other material, which is softer than the flanges 7, upon tightening the cover, the flanges slightly out or abrade the lugs 6, thus permitting the lugs to more firmly engage the flanges than would be the case it the lugs were also cast 7 7 with a shank 9 provided, preferably, with a peripherally grooved portion 10 which is embedded in the body 5, the latter, in the process of construction being cast around the shank of the lug.
By having the shank peripherally grooved, the lug is'held firmly in its operative position and is not liable to be drawn therefrom by the pressure of the lug upon the flange with which it engages. By having the shank 9 substantially of the same size at its inner and outer ends and transversely grooved, the body 5 is interlocked with the lug, while at the same time, this shape of the shank permits of the ready removal of the patterns from the sand in the operation of molding the cover.
The outside of the cover is provided centrally with the usual square lug 11 with which the cover may be gripped with a Wrench. 7
In the operation of my invention, the cover is slipped over the outer end of the ring 1 in a position at right angles to that shown in the drawing, and the cover is then turned to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the lugs 6 will respectively slide into engagement with the inclined inner sides ofthe flanges 7. )wing to the yielding and resilient nature of the gasket 8, it the cover has a tendency to stick to the ring 1, after having been locked, it may be loosened safely by striking its outer side, so as to force the lugs 6 inwardly outor' tight engagement with the flanges 7. The cover may then be retracted to the position at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2, and withdrawn from the ring.
As noted in 6, the outerend of the ring 1 has a beveled periphery 12 and an annular inwardly extending portion 13, whereby the gasket 8 will hear at its center against the ring l instead of at its outer This will prevent liability of leakage. it will also be noted that the peripheral flange 14E of the cover engages the outer side of the ring 1 at the outer side of the beveled periphery 12, so that the gasket and cover will be retained concentric with the ring.
