Description

UNITED STATES PATENT CEEIcEr OYRUS E. GRANDY AND ZIBA B.' GRANDY, OF STAFFORD SPRINGS, CON- NECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO THEMSELVES AND WILLIAM D. HEALD, OF
sAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN QILERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,361, dated April 1, 1873; application tiled February 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OYRUS E. GRANDY and ZIBA B. GRANDY, of Stafford Springs, in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oilers, of which the following is a specification The drawing represents a central longitudinal section of our improved oiler.
A is the vessel or oil-reservoir. B is the tube, which has an extension D within the vessel A. F is a tube closed at its lower end, which is made to slide within the extension or tube D by means of the lever-plate G which has its fulcrum at the point H. The bottom of the tube F is connected with one end of the lever-plate by the connecting-rod I. J is a plunger-rod, the lower end of which is attached to the other end of the lever-plate. This rod extends up through the top ofthe can with a stuffing box, K, around it which works in the collar L. M is a spiral spring which is attached to the lever-plate at N, and to the inside of the cup or vessel A at the point O. When the oiler is` tipped, as in oiling, the oil will enter the tube F through the openings e e; then, by a pressure with the finger on the plunger-rod or knob P, the oil is forced out of the tube by a positive motion. The back motion of the tube F is produced by the recoil of the spring M. Risa cover and spoon hinged to the tube (.l at S. As seen in the drawing it is thrown back. When the end of the tube is covered by it the spoon T projects from the end of the tube, and is used to clear the oil-holev of gum or dirt. A separate instrument is usually required for this purpose.
When the oil-hole has been sufliciently cleared a gentle lateral pressure throws it y form and arrangement of parts shown in the drawing as variations may be made in many ways without departing from our invention. The cover may be made straight, and to straddle the tube, if desired, but we prefer the form shown as, by making it angular as represented, there is a slight spring which compensates for the wear of the end of the tube. This cover and spoon may be attached to the tube of any oiler.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1; In combination with an oiler a cover and spoon, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. An oiler consisting of the vessel A, tubes D and F, lever G, orifices e e, plunger-rod J, and spring M, when arranged to operate as and for the purposes described.
