State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Methods and Apparatus for aking Color-Qorrectin and olor-Separation Negatives for-Platerinting Trades, of which the following-is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in method and apparatus for makingcolor correcting and color separation negatives for plate printing trades, andhas for its object the provision of an improved method and apparatus by means of which such negatives,
and printing plates therefrom, may be quickly and economically made without restriction as to the size of the subject or light conditions, using either sunlight, daylight,

By this arrangement it will beobserved that unexposed sensitized plates may be inserted in the plate holder 11 and exposed to light from the subject being treated, passing through said suitable color filters, to produce the usual negativesfor the, purpose, as will be readily understood by those skilled in this art.

A cord 21 is secured to frame 19 and passed" over guide pulley-'22 and through a suitable aperture in' the side of the camera 10 andby means of which frame 19' may manipulated in the same manner as frame 3,? as explained above. "An adjusting frame 23 is mounted within the r ot frame 19 for free adjustment therein, and resting at its bottom on a spring-held supporting point 24, as shown. Frame 23 carries at one side a lug 25 threaded upon an adjusting shaft 26 mounted upon frame 19 and connected by beveled gears 27 with an operating shaft 28, which is carried by a lug 28 on frame 19 operating through a suitable slot in frame 9, as shown. Shaft 28 is in turn connected by means of a detachable slot and lug connection 29 with a longitudinally movable hand shaft 30, having a knurled hand wheel 31 thereon, and wherebyshaft 26 may be readily manipulated to adjust the frame 23 vertically within the frame 19 and-the parts freed for forward swinging of frame 19. An adjusting screw 32 is mounted in a swivel post 33 on frame 19 and is threaded in a swiveled ear or lug 34 on frame 23, and whereby the frame 23 may be angularly adjusted within the frame 19, rocking or swinging upon the point 24, as will be readily understood.
Frame 23 is provided in each corner with an adjusting screw 35 carrying a collar 37 imprisoned between a laterally adjustable bracket 36 and the corresponding corner of the frame, and whereby other frames may be secured for forward and back adjustments. In the form of apparatus illustrated, a filler frame 38 is shown. as secured within the frame 23 by means of the screws 35, said filler frame being similarly equipped with these adjusting screws at each corner thereof. Likewise, another filler frame 39 is shown as secured in place within the frame 38 and similarly equipped at its corners with adjusting screws 35. as shown. A negative holding frame 40 is secured within the filler frame 39 by means of its adjusting screws 35, said negative frame bein grooved on its sides, just as is frame 12, and adapted to receive various negatives. when desired. B omitting or using one or more of the filler and negative frames, negatives of various sizes may be provided for. An arrangement providing for larger negatives has been illustrated in Fig. 7, wherein a negative frame 40' is shown as mounted in frame 23 to receive larger negatives il.
In carrying on the improved process, the frame 12 is first adjusted to position on frame 9 directly in front of the plate holder 11 and parallel thereto, and preliminary negatives obtained by exposing sensitized plates to the subject through different color filters and the clear glass 14 in the usual manner, to obtain negatives for the production of the different plates for producing the different colors of the subject. Thus. negatives will be made by making exposures through violet, green, red, or any suitable color filter in frame 12, depending upon the colors in the subject which it is desired to reproduce and as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. These various preliminary negatives are developed, fixed and washed in the usual manner. Then, one of these negatives suitable to the required or desired separation, say for instance, for the yellow printing plate, or the red printing plate. or the blue printing plate, or the black printing plate is selected, the operator depending upon his skill and experience in this art in making a selection of the negative which will give the best results for the color plate desired. Each of the negatives thus selected for the different plates for producing the different colors is in turn placed in the frame 19. which. of course, is previously idjusted to arallel position before the plate holder 11. tie frame 12 being swung forwardly for the purpose, as indicated in Fig. 3. After each negative has been thus placed in operative position in the camera, its hold- :ng frame is nicely adjusted by means of the various adjustments provided until said negative is brought into proper register with the image of the subject in the camera. as ill be readily understood by those skilled in this art. To accomplish nice registration. it will be observed that vertical, angular. and forward and back adjustments are orovided. so that the negatives may be thus delicately adjusted to proper registration with the image ofthe subject.
After each of the preliminary negatives has thus been placed in registration with the image in the camera, an unexposed sensitive plate is arranged in the plate holder 11 and exposed through a suitable color filter, with the negative as a screen, and permitting only those portions of light which indicate clear glass to act on the plate in the plate holder for a given time, such time being determined by the skill and judgment of the operator, depending upon the light conditions, the subject in hand, the character and qualities of the lens of the camera, as is usual in this art. After a suitable exposure, depending upon the judgment of the operator, the lens of the camera is cap ed or closed, and the negative withdrawn f i'om its registering position by means of the cord 21 extending to the outside of the camera, such withdrawal being thus permitted without disturbing the relations of the image of the subject to the plate in the plate holder. The exposure is then completed through the proper color filter in the usual manner, and for a time depending upon the judgment of the operator, as above outlined. The late thus produced is removed. developed, xed and washed in the usual manner, and is then ready for use in the usual manner for the production of a printing plate to print the corresponding color in the subject under treatment. Likewise. other negatives are those produced for the other colors in the subject, and from them corresponding plates are produced in the usual manner for the corresponding colore of the subject, all as will be readily duction of the proper negatives. or plates for the purpose, it-being well known and understood in this art how to produce the actual printing plates from these negatives.

In this manner and by use of the apparatus disclosed, plates for reproducing the various colors in a subject matter w1ll be readily and economically provided, irres ecj tive of the size of the subject or the light T p conditions, and with great. gradation in detail formation. I Y
While I' have illustrated and described the preferred method of procedure and apparatus for car ing on the same, these are capable of varlation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the. precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of suchvariations and modifications as come within the sage of the appended claims.-

means for temporarily removing and replac- 7 ing said clear glass member and saidnegative holder, substantially as described.

Apparatus for ma 'ng negatives from which printing plates may be produced comprising a camera having a plate holder; a clear glass member arranged to be positioned in front of said plate holder; an adjustable negative holding member arranged to be posltioned in front of said plate holder and means for temporarily removin and rplacing said clear glass member an said negative holder substantially as described.
11. Apparatus for making negatives from which printing plates maybe produced comprising a camera having a plate holder; at
negative holding member arranged in front of said plate holder; means adapting said negative holder to the reception of negatives of various sizes; and means for temporarily removing said negative holder; substantially as described.
12. Apparatus for making negatives from Which printing plates may be produced comprising a camera having a plate holder; a
color filter member arranged to be positioned in front of said plate holder; a negative holding member arranged to be positioned in front of said plate holder; means adapting said negative holder to the reception of negatives of various sizes; and means temporarily removing and replacing said filter member and said negative holder, substantially as described.

A which printing plates may be produced comprising a camera having a plate .holder; a color filter member arranged to be posi tioned in front of said plate holder; an adjustable negative holding member arranged to be positioned in front of said plate holder; means adapting said negative holder to the reception of negatives of various sizes; and
pparatus for making negatives from means temporarily removing and replacing said filter member and said negative holder, substantially as described.

Apparatus for making negatives from which printing plates may be produced coinarising a camera having a plate holder; :1 frame insertible in said camera in front of said plate holder; two forwardly swinging frames on said insertible frame said swin ing frames being provided with glass hold- :ng means; and means, on the outside of said camera. for manipulating said swing- Lng frames. substantially as described.

Apparatus for making negatives from vnich printing plates may be produced oomprising a camera having a plate holder; a frame insertible in said camera in front of said plate holder: a swinging frame on said insertible frame provided with means for holding a clear glass plate; a second swing frame on said insertible frame; a negative holding frame mounted on said second swinging frame: means for adjusting said negative frame vertically, forward, and back and angularly in said second swinging frame; and means, on the outside of said :amera, for manipulating said swinging frames, substantially as described.
