J. R. COLLINS. l CE CREAM MEASURE.

JAMES R. COLLINS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ICE-CREAM MEASURE.
Patented Mar. 29, 1921.
Application filed September 19, 1919. Serial No. 324,949.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. COLLINS, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice Cream Measures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to ice cream meastires, and more particularly to measures for facilitating the introduction of ice cream into cartons.
It is the object of theinvention to provide an ice cream measure proportioned to snugly eceive a carton in which the ice cream is to be dispensed and to provide the measure with a detachable rim for shield ing the edge of the carton sons to permit the latter to be filled by thrusting the measure into a body of ice cream.
A further object is to provide upon said detachable rim a scraping member, which when the measure is rotated manually will dislodge the ice cream adhering to that within the measure.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the measure and its detachable rim, shown separated;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the upper portion of the measure showing a carton therein and the detachable rim in its posi tion of use.
In these views the reference character A designates an open-topped receptacle of inverted frusto-conical shape, the bottom of said receptacle having the handle member B projecting centrally therefrom. At C is indicated a carton formed of card board or similar material and adapted to fit snugly within the receptacle A with its rim portion projecting slightly therefrom. To retain said carton in the receptacle and to prevent its rim portion being crushed or bent when the carton is being filled by thrusting the receptacle within a body of ice cream, there is employed a rim member D detachably engageable With the receptacle preferably by the bayonet joint established by the pin E on the receptacle and slot F formed in said rim member. The outer marginal portion of the member D is inwardly return-bent as indicated at G and overlaps the carton so as to shield the edge thereof when said rim member is in place upon the receptacle. At opposed points the flange Gr is interrupted to accommodate the end of a cutter H extending diametrically across the rim member D and rigidly secured thereto in the plane of its outer edge.
in the use of the described invention, after a carton C has been placed in the receptacle A, the rim member D is applied to said receptacle and is given a slight turn to properly engage the bayonet slot F with the pin E. Holding the device by the handle B theoperator then fills the carton C by plunging the measure while inverted into a body of ice cream. While still en gaged with said body, the measure is turned slightly on its central axis, whereby the blade ii scrapes off any ice cream exteriorly adhering to that within the measure. The rim member D is then detached and the 'filled carton C is removed from the receptacle.
As compared to filling ice cream cartons by hand, the above described device accomplishes a very considerable saving of time and permits the ice cream to be packed into carton more uniformly and to be scraped off more smoothly than is practicable with the means now employed.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a receptacle for an ice cream carton, of a rim member detach ably engaging said receptacle and providinga shield for the edge of a carton within the receptacle, and means carried by said rim member for cutting off the ice cream adhering to that fillin the carton when the receptacle is rotated.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle for an ice cream carton, of a rim member detachably engaging said receptacle and providing a shield for the edge of a carton within the receptacle, and a cutter blade carried by said rim member in diametrical relation thereto.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle for an ice cream carton, of a rim member detachably engaging said receptacle and providing a shield for a carton within the receptacle, and a cutter blade carried by said rim member in diametrical relation thereto and having its outer edge flush with that of said rim member.
In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle for an ice cream carton, of an annular rim member, having quick detachable telescoping engagement with said receptacle and hav ing its outer edge portion inwardly return bent to shield the edge of the carton within said receptacle, and a cutter blade diametri- 1 cally carried by said rim member and having its outer edge substantially flush with that of said rim member, the shield portion ofthe rim being interrupted to permit at tachment of said cutter blade to the body 1 of the rim.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature JAMES R. COLLINS.
