To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Dn WITT C. DORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Propeller, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to propellers, one of its objects being to provide a propeller adapted to rotate about an aXis extending transversely of the line of movement of the airship or other structure and having simple and efficient means for feathering the blades so that continuous rotation of the propeller will drive the structure forward.
Another object is to provide a propeller having novel means for actuating the same, each propeller, during its rotation, having its several blades shifted about their individual longitudinal aXes to operate in properly timed relation to drive the structure to which the propeller is connected.
Another object is to provide propellers rotating in opposite directions respectively, the blades of the two propellers operating to exert a constant pull or thrust.
Another object is to provide a structure which, by eliminating the motor, can be used as a wind mill or a water wheel for driving machinery.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

ranged in pairs and each provided, in one face, with a cam groove 3. The wheels 2 of each pair are located near each end of the shaft 1 and are spaced apart to receive between them a hub 4 mounted for rotation on the shaft and having guide loops 5 radiating from the ends thereof and arranged in pairs. A rim 7 is concentric with each hub Aand is connected thereto by spokes 8. Stems 9 are radially disposed within the rim 7 and bear, at their inner ends in the hub 4. ropelling blades 10 are fixed to the outer ends of the stems 9 so as to move therewith and formed in the stems between the rim 7 and the hub 4 is a spiral groove 11 in which a projection 12 is mounted to slide. This projection is formed in the bore within a block 13 which is mounted to slide on the stem and has oppositely extending fingers 14 carrying rollers 15 movable within the grooves 3, the fingers being guided by thev loops 5. Thus it will be seen that when the wheel made up of the rim 7 and hub 4 is rotated the blocks 13 will be moved back and forth upon the stems 9 by the cam grooves, causing the stems to rotate back and forth with the result that the blades will be brought successively to position with their faces in active positions during a portion of their rotation about the shaft and will feather during the remainder of such movement.
For the purpose of driving the wheels so that they can be used for propelling, a motor, preferably of the Gnome type, shown at 16, is mounted for rotation on the shaft and between the two wheels. To each side of this motor is connected a gear 17 adapted to rotate therewith and each of these gears meshes with another smaller gear 18 secured to a shaft 19 journaled in a bearing 20 carried by the stationary shaft 1. A gear 21 is secured to each of the shafts 19 and one of them meshes with a gear 22 journaled on the shaft 1 while the other gear 21 meshes with an intermediate gear 23 which, in turn, meshes with a gear 24 journaled on the shaft 1. Gear 22 is connected in any suitable manner, as by means of arms 25, to the rim 7 of the adjoining wheel and the gear 24 is similarly connected to the wheel adjacent thereto. r1`hus it will be seen that when the engine is set in motion and caused to rotate about the shaft 1 motion will be transmitted therefrom to the two wheels, causing said wheels to rotate in opposite directions respectively and at the same speed. The parts are so timed that as the blades of the two wheels move rearwardly they will displace air rearwardly and cause the machine to be propelled forwardly and, as the blades move forwardly, they will feather.
, It will be apparent, of course, that by substituting a drive wheel for the motor 16 the mechanism can be used as a wind wheel or a water wheel and the power transmitted to machineryY to be driven.
What is claimed is The combination with a stationary shaft,
vof a motor mounted vfor rotation upon the shaft, opposed gears revoluble with the motor, members arranged in pairs and fixably secured to the shaft, said members providing cam slots extending around the shaft, hubs mounted for rotation upon the shaft and between the cam slots, a rim concentric with and spaced from each hub and revoluble n therewith, stems mounted for rotation within the hubs and rims, propeller blades at the outer ends of the stems, there being spirals vatrthe inner end portions of the stems, members slidable on the spirals, oppositely eX- tending fingers on said members and working within the adjacent cam slots, gears secured to and revoluble with the respective rims, and means for transmitting motion to said gears from the gears of the motor for driving the hubs in opposite directions respectively to reciprocate lthe'slidable members upon the spirals and impart back and forthrotation to the stems and propeller f blades.
