IMPROVEMENT IN REVERSIBLE KNOB-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,271, dated March 25, 1873.
provement in Locks and Latches, of which thefollowing is a specification:
This invention relates. to door locks and latches, in which provision is inade for reversing the bolt, so that the beveled side of its head can be arranged either way. It consists of an independent endwise movable and reversible bolt, having a cylindrical headed shank provided with notches, in combination with a pawl, actuating spring, and a supportlug-frame, as hereinafter more fullydescribed and claimed.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a door-lock containing my improvement, the cover of the case having been removed to expose the interior mechanism. Fig. 2 is a detail view of myimprovement.
The same letters of reference are employed in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
The bolt-head A is beveled upon one side in the usual manner, and is provided with a long cylindrical stem or shank, B, by means of which it is supported in perforated lugs c and c of a frame, 0. The inner end of the latter, being forked, embraces the spindle of the door-knob; and the legs of the fork, being turned up at the end, bear against fingers or cams on said spindle, by which the frame and bolt are retracted in the ordinary way. The end of the cylindrical shank B-which, after its attachment to the frame G, is slightly upset, or otherwise prepared to prevent its accidental withdrawal-protrudes a sufficient distance through the lug c to permit of an outward endwise movement of the bolt, independent of its supporting-frame C, until the square part of the head is drawn entirely out of the lockcase, This done, the bolt may be turned so as to present the bevel of its head upon the desired side. A pawl, D, pivoted upon a stud on the frame 0 by the side of the bolt, between the lugs c and 0, takes intoone or the other of two notches, b and b, upon opposite sides of the shank B, for the purpose of preventing the independent endwise movement of the bolt. The pawl has a bent lever'arm, D, which, reaching over the shank B in close proximity to the lug c of the frame, is acted upon by the operating-spring E, which thus holds the pawl to its work at the same time that it actuates the bolt and its supporting-frame. The screw or bolt hole a in the lock-case is formed directly by the side of the bent lever-arm D of the pawl D, so that, on removing the screw, a nail or other suitable device may be introduced through said hole to'bear against the arm Dand turn the pawl upon its pivot until it releases the shank of the bolt, which can then be drawn out and reversed, as above stated.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a supporting-frame with the independent endwise movable and reversible bolt A B, the shank of which is cylindrical in form, and supplied with notches b b and head b pawl D D, and actuating-spring E, substantially as shown and described.
